Yamaha S950 vs Roland BK9 Keyboard Demo

By a 30 year experience I can say that you always hear ( in a studio situation ) a Yamaha synth softer than a Roland who keeps that sharp sound. But, on stage, Roland keeps winning all the time. Yamaha synths always soud like toys in a stage situation.

Yamaha have such a Cheesy sound. This may not be always bad but as you discover, this is not good for stage. But what i can hear, Yamaha finally start realising that and Genos is much better in that regard Is far less Cheesy than previous line of Tyros.

A great way to review two keyboards. As always, it's not a question of which is best but which one do your own ears prefer. For me, it's the Yamaha but that's because I like a brighter cleaner sound. Both instruments are fine for the pros who will probably prefer the Roland. For the amateur, serious or otherwise, the Yamaha will be, typically, easier to use & have some more appealing functions. So there you are - you pays your money & makes your choice! You'll no doubt be happy with either.

I've just bought a BK9 and glad I did I love it, the S950 sounds good, but I think the BK9 offers something different to the run of the mill and predictable Yamaha stuff. The 60's guitar on the BK9 you chose is not the best on the instrument, there are better ones and with a little delay added they sound great. The more I play around with the BK9 the better it gets. I enjoyed your Ralf Schink demos, great playing.

The bk 9 is a workstation. The Yamaha is just a home keyboard. You should make the comparison between tyros and bk 9 . + You have to use the same EQ for the channels of the both keyboards .

Yamaha has a very synthetic sound, even when it comes to natural sounds such as organ, guitar or piano. Roland sounds are deeper, more natural, cleaner. After sonic aspect for me clearly wins Roland.

It is up to the preference! I have both roland and yamaha keyboards and use them according to the best character of each in studio or on gigs. Something, of course, depends on the individual taste and style of the musician, but this clip shows very well that both producers have a lot to offer, for wide spectrum of appliance. Personally, I find yamaha's piano unbeatable, especially for moderate piano playing in middle register with medium dynamics at rich chords, while roland offers persuasive jazz guitar, wurlitzer sounds and drawbar organs for more rocky expression... As I said in the beginning, good and experienced player can take advantage of any decent instrument.

You can EQ the Yamaha to make it sound even better. You can only compare instruments if you have exactly the same sounds on the same settings !

From 10.50 onwards, While keys pressed, when changing sounds, in Yamaha, sound cuts / stops, but in Roland, it does not....So, is there any Setting required in Yamaha or its by default or its defect ???

There's a setting you have to enable manually every time you turn on the keyboard. I've not discovered any way to have it on permanently.

I think Roland has a vintage feeling to it, while Yamaha has the modern (-ish) feeling. I'll personally go with Roland because my music style is towards good ol' times and I am used to the Roland style. Yamaha is a fine instrument too and they both sound great. I do own both Roland and Yamaha instruments.

i have owned Yamaha, Roland, Korg and privia.. currently my main keyboard is a Yamaha Genos. Yamaha- Has cheaper keybeds and very light to play, not suitable fo playing piano dynamics. PSR series has got the worst build quality among other Yamaha keyboards, look at montage series. Sound- PSR series sounds terrible and cheesy on stage and bigger sound system, but sounds fantastic on its own speakers at home. Very user friendly and fulfills the need of a home keyboardist. If your only choice is to play at home, then Yamaha is the best choice. On the other hand Roland has got sounds that cut through other sounds can be used on stage or big sound systems. Yamaha is good at marketing and has got a wide variety of distributors.

They both sound good in different ways. However, when it comes to live on the fly ease of operation Yamaha wins light years ahead of going through all thoses pages, spinning your data wheel, having to use foot pedals etc.

I have £1400 burning a hole in my pocket but which keyboard should I buy? One has more keys that the other and that's it for my professional comparison. (I am a complete beginner) I would have liked to here the same song played with the exact same instruments. The backing track/rhythms sounded the same too - are they factory built or add-ons? And finally - will I need a degree in computing/MIDI to get the best from my machine - I notice the player making an awful lot of button presses. Heeeeeeeelp!

Y depende de tantas cosas, de tantos parametros musicales, intensidades, tonos, timbres, programacion de sonido y sobre todo la ecualizacion que le haya metido el demostrador. que considero que el muestrario que se hace, es solo valido a titulo de una primera orientacion, que podria ser completamente subvertida en cuanto vaya cualquier profesional y organice todos esos parametros de otra manera... tu explicación y opinión es será muy profesional... pero yo te la voy a resumir en pocas palabras.. Roland es muy bueno para pianos, órganos y sonidos sintetizados.. yamaha es muy bueno para las guitarras acústicas, eléctricas, brass, strings, winds, percusiones, pianos acústicos y eléctricos. .. y por último, los Korg Pa son buenos en la mayoría de sus sonidos, quizás sea él más balanceado de los tres. pero si, es cierto depende de la apreciación del oído de cada quien y del uso que le darás a cada instrumento. saludos!!

Comparto tu clasificacion general, Yo particularmente, tengo mis ropios gustos y prefiero por el balance de sonidos, como tu mismo le llamas, primero a Korg, luego Roland y despues Yamaha, pero hace algun tiempo me encontre un Yamaha que me parecio brillantisimo. Sharing Moments estoy de acuerdo contigo y también depende del tipo de genero musical que a uno le gusta, a mi en lo particular me gusta mucho el yamaha psr-s950 (de la linea psr-s) especialmente los instrumentos de aire ( guitarras, sax, brass etc). pero es cuestión de gusto de cada quien, lo importante es disfrutar lo que tocas.

Haider Omar We compared these two products as they are quite close in price (in the UK at least), which is the main consideration for most players. Although the sounds are fantastic, we don't feel it's fair to pit the £1500 BK9 against the £3300 Tyros 5!

please, the tyros 5 must be confronted with a keyboard as Pa3x or 4x. let's talk coherently. if so it would be fair to compare the PSR S670 with Korg PA900? or BK3 vs S970? and so on.

Decisions can only be as good as the info, knowledge and experience on which they are based. You cannot decide after hearing them using a PC for sound reproduction to start with. Generally speaking Yamaha produce excellent value for money equipment including Amplifiers, DVD players, Pianos, Organs which are excellent I repeat excellent jack of all trades master of none. So if you want a Hi End Amp you would not buy Yamaha but pay much more to buy better. If you want a High end Piano you would need to pay more too unless its Yamaha or Hyundai etc.... Similarly Canon they make Cameras, Copiers, etc... excelent value for money too. But if you want a really good Camera not to shoot in automatic you have people dedicated to the art and that is Nikon. And if you want the better sound made by people dedicated to sound you buy the Roland. I had Canon but eventually changed to Roland. I had canon but eventually changed to Nikon FX. I had Yamaha A1 amp but eventually changed to B &O. Having said this I doubt if the amature would ever be able to tell the difference which exists between a Canon and a Nikon if you shoot automatic JPEG. Nikon is for RAW pics which can be professionally edited. B&O is not for MP3 which Apple right call I-tunes. To hear tunes which sound great buy Yamaha or whatever. And similarly I can tell you one thing. If you connect the Roland and the Yamaha to a B&O Truly HiFi Amp (and not one of many amps around) I can assure you that even my wife can tell the difference - Not an easy choice is it since there is more to it than meets the eye. And it also depends on what pics you intend to shoot, what music you intend to hear and what music you intend to play ................................So for beginners a word of advice from an older man is - learn how to shoot - learn how to play - and to do so it will take a number of years and a number of hours regularly per day or per week. The after some time and experience you will have sufficient knowledge and experience to decide for yourself. Anyway I have tried to pass over some of my experience although its still not good enough, is my honest opinion but its a pretty good guideline. Good luck to all.

Really nice work of comparison. I was a Roland fan in the past (I still have a Piano Roland and a D50) but now I prefer PSR (I have a PSR900 now) and Tyros sounds much more. Even the piano, that on Roland seems more dinamic, it's really richer in harmonics on Yamaha. Only good thing of BK9 is that of having 76 keys. Also the DSP seems to be better on Yamaha and you understand it on guitars.

The teacher will say, learn your instrument. Booth have great sounds. Overall its sad the touchscreen dont exist in the 2013/2016 models like the 2008/2012 models at some of theme. But better looking for a model of 2008. These are still good and a lot cheaper.

Just put on your headphones guys and hear the difference!!! Its clearly Yamaha!! The 'Blues style' of the s950, hear it till the end and you'll get to realize the realism the machine has got. Though Roland is also good, but will have to admit, it really sounds bad in some of the comparisons (especially the 60's Style)!!!

Yamaha loses in not including draw bars. Hands down a whicked Hammond Organ coming from the bows of the BK9. Any opinions as to how these are built, R they road worthy, or can they fall apart on you with one jolt. A construction question.
