Have you heard about the plastic nails? They are really useful for fixing wood at the cnc table because if you run into them with the drill, nothing breaks.

I have the Omer composite nailer and it's amazing. If you don't have a vacuum table, it's a killer solution for sheet goods.

Nice! Regarding the sacrificial base, you might actually want to make it slightly smaller than the full cut range of the machine instead of bigger. When it comes to leveling and resurfacing it, you'll start to just turn it into a large pocket or dish, so when you come to cutting material larger than the cut capacity, it won't be able to sit on the level base, but instead float on the rim now left. Also, as others have said, a plastic Brad nailer is a massive time saver. I believe avid cnc sell one. You need to use the specific composite gun as the nails don't work in a normal nailer. But it doesn't chew up your base board like screws,gum up your cutters like double sided tape or get in the way of a tool path like clamps. All it takes to remove the piece from the bed is a sharp whack with a rubber mallet on one side and all the nails sheer off! Look forward to seeing your dust collection! I've gone through many variations myself!

You can use a large-diameter surfacing bit to level the table outside the normal cutting area. Keep in mind that a larger diameter bit requires more precise tramming, or you can wind up with stair steps on your "flat" table.

Defo! I use quite a hefty 50mm diameter surfacing bit with 3 carbide inserts. But I guess with the current sacrificial board he has installed, as it goes from edge to edge of the gantry, it'll always have a raised edge that a larger cutter would never be able to reach.

Sweet machine!! I look forward to seeing what kind of interesting projects you make with it. When attaching your spoil board and attaching stock to your spoil board, use brass screws. Brass is softer than steel and if you ever accidentally hit one with a cutter, it will be les likely to damage the edges. Another suggestion to help with dust/chip management-- cut 150mm strips of poly carbonate sheets and attach them vertically to the left and right edges of your spoil board. That will prevent most of the dust from blowing off of the sides of the machine.

Can't wait to see what cool stuff you can do with this! Some advice from a fellow CNC user that was helpful for me when I was adding my wasteboard. If you're planning on doing parts longer than the dimensions of your machine, better to treat the working area of your CNC like an island rather than a lake in your spoilboard. That way as you surface the working area, it remains the highest point for parts to sit as you machine them.

Awesome machine! The only thing I am unsure of is the size of the MDF work surface being bigger than the work area, since you cannot surface everything which creates a ledge around the worksurface. This could be a hinderance laying down large sheets of plywood.

when i was working as a robotic programmer, we always had these aluminium frames in our working halls. I remember how often i hit my head while programming the actuators, because i had to sit under the whole construct. Was a fun time though

I purchased my unit from Avid last year. I bought the 4x8 CNC/Plasma Pro setup. I can use it as a 4x8 CNC or 4x4 Plasma. Lucky for you, you didn't have to purchase it. This was a huge investment.

As I remember, many people make a CNC table with holes, just like welding table. You can glue nuts into the bottom of the surface and use them to hold your staff on the table. Also, quite obvious, you can use duct tape to set your vacuum cleaner tube on the CNC head until you finish dust collector :)

At work, we have stackercranes and some of those have make cracks on their aluminum support beams and they have been replaced. But the old ones are still useable but they are still laying around somewhere at work for over a year. I asked for a ticket to get them home but they still won't release them due to failure calculations still haven't been completed. I would use those beams to build my own cnc machine but so far, no luck yet in even starting on it. I'm jealous you got such an expensive machine for free. I guess Avid cnc won't look me up and send me one too :p

Awesome video - you might actually want to keep your waste board smaller or equal to the maximum cut area of your - as you surface the waste board it's going to turn into a pocket with higher edge that will prevent you from being able to put larger pieces on the CNC since they'll float over the actual cut area. A 38mm waste board is going to last FOREVER too... most of the time the most you're gonna be cutting into the actual waste board is a thousandth of an inch and you'll have to do that a LOT before you actually NEED to resurface it.

Love Alex and his vids... was thinking a board with just a hole for the neck of the wine bottles where the torque from the weight of the bottle and the friction of the neck inside a hole slightly larger than the radius of the wine bottle neck would be a cool way to store them visually. Not a wine guy so not sure if there are reasons why that's a bad idea.

Storing wine isn't rocket science as long as it's short term and not for aging. Generally you want the cork to remain submerged in the wine so it doesn't dry out. This prevents oxygen from entering the bottle. You want the bottle at a slight tilt so that any particulate matter that's suspended in the wine will collect at the bottom of the bottle. That way the sediment won't get disturbed as you handle the bottle provided you are careful. Ideally it should be stored in darkness, but for a kitchen it's fine as long as it's stored out of direct sunlight. For long term storage and aging temperature control is very important as is regular turning of the bottle as you actually want the particulate matter to circulate through the wine while in storage. So the requirements for short term storage and long term storage is slightly different. For most of us who has only a few bottles in the kitchen nothing special is needed, but designing a wine cellar is better left to the experts. It might still not be rocket surgery but people who want/need a dedicated wine cellar are likely to be quite demanding (ok, so they tend to be pretentious snobs) so it's better left to those who know how to handle them.

You need to use double-sided tape to hold your piece down and now have to chew up your wasteboard any more than needed. Also, create small tabs in the work so it doesn't come flying out while you are cutting and then you can just hand cut them when you are finished.

Just curious how Norway tax laws are -- do you have to declare the freebies as income on your taxes? Here in the US, that CNC and Aspire software would amount to about $15k in income tax to declare.

Yes, he would have to declare it as income for his company (I presume he has a company), and thus pay taxes on it. Possibly Aspire could pay those taxes to make up for it, as it's otherwise quite an expensive gift ;)

I would commission a custom metal bit for "re-surfacing" work. Then make the shroud fit that. That way, you can re-surface it with something akin to a fine scrapper/sandpaper with the machine program rather than doing it by hand/with a drillbit.
