I can't set only one goal. If I don't have work goals, I won't go. If I don't have relationship goals, I will be completely isolated. If I don't have fitness goals, my health is at risk. It feels really important to nurture many different aspects of my life. Even if my goals are maintenance goals, I still have to set them.

Yeah I can't just have one goal either. Even within fitness, I need at least a general idea of a goal for different muscle groups (or specific machines)

I am 100% behind this. My life will go to dog if I don’t have things I’m actively working towards. It helps me in keeping me moving forward

I've started this year to just focus on the 2 main things I need in my life right now. I tried to do too much in 2023 and couldn't achieve any of it because there literally wasn't enough time to do it. Then I felt like a failure and a loser when I just couldn't fit 6 hours of work into the 3-4 hours of free time I have after my 9-5. Then of course, I have to allow my brain to rest and have fun so I don't go through burnout again.

1 goal in each area makes sense. And keeping it small. So health: sugar rush every other Friday only. Walk 6k a day. ASSUMING I already hit 6k most days.

Yes. Congrats on your success. (1.) I decided to return to a Rolling Schedule to help me deal with my over-research that led to paralysis. (Of course, some scheduled items have appointed hours, but most of it starts then stops whenever it ends up being finished.) (2.) I stopped beating myself up for all the stops, delays and restarts. I keep telling myself “just keep going, just keep going”. (3.) I also add a different-but-micro task by the end of each day-something that’s really been just sitting there for a long period of time. This helps me to get just a little bit more each day. Cheers🎉.

I recently started working with an ADHD coach. I find that just having another human to check in with helps with getting focused and staying the course. Don't know if we want to call that having an accountability partner or if this is some form of body doubling or what, but it helps.

I keep setting fantasy magical future me goals and then feel like crap when I don't achieve. I did do a sub-30 5K for my 60th birthday when I don't even like to run. But usually whatever goal I set, the second I get there, I am already frustrated that I am not at the next milestone. It is like each achievement is underwhelming.

I can't do external accountability for internal goals because it severely impacts my self-regulation and I depend on self-regulation to be able to do the things that trigger my anxiety. I can't sneak up on myself if I'm constantly worrying about what I imagine my accountability buddy is thinking.

You had me, until you talked about losing ten pounds. Losing that 10 lbs would help me a lot! In healthy ways. And, I would feel so encouraged! When you started talking about $$$ I got lost. I am a new subscriber, though, and I love your content. 🙂

I resent the point you made that the ability to achieve the goal should be fully independent of other people. Yes the fiancé example is obvious, but generally speaking our life doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Even your achievement of 76k in passive revenue wouldn’t happen without buy in of others. I don’t think you should discourage people from setting a goal of for example starting their own company, or going for a promotion just because it’s a complex process.

I had the same thought about advice No 4. If your goal is to set up a business, sell a product, get a promotion, or even a new job, it will most definitely depend on "buy-in" from another person/party/customer. Perhaps that advice could have been worded in another way - where people need to be mindful that the success of some goals will depend on others. So if we are not successful on our first try, we need to try again and perhaps approach it differently.

I had the same issue with this video. I have two goals for 2024. Well, more than that, but the two I think I should focus on are linked. Getting a certification will help me find a job. The certification totally depends on me and may or may not get me a job. But getting a job is priority #1 and very much dependent on other people. I think this video really discouraged me and doesn't make my ADHD brain feel like it can accomplish my primary goal of getting a job. So it doesn't even want to try. This is really bad thinking going into the new year. Now I feel I have to find a way to get out of this mindset. If I don't I'm going to be homeless before June. Ugh!@@suzieuda

Can't you control the subscriber thing? By making so many videos, use SEO better and buy some ads.. It seems exactly as controllable as the goal you made.

### Detailed Summary by CHATGPT The video, presented by ADHD coach Cara McGill, discusses how she successfully followed through on a goal for the first time in 2023 by making specific changes to her goal-setting approach. Here are the key points: 1. **Single Focused Goal**: - Chose only one goal to focus on for the entire year, or alternatively, one goal per quarter or month. - This helps with accountability, clarity, and prioritization, ensuring the goal is important and achievable. 2. **Impactful Goal**: - Selected a goal that would have a significant impact on her life. - Example: Her goal was to achieve $100,000 in asynchronous revenue to reduce her reliance on one-on-one coaching and Zoom meetings. 3. **Reality-Based Goals**: - Emphasized the importance of setting goals grounded in reality. - Suggested reviewing past performance to set realistic and achievable targets. - Acknowledged her progress, even if the goal was not fully met, by comparing it to previous achievements. 4. **Control Over Goals**: - Recommended choosing goals within one's control. - Cautioned against goals dependent on others’ actions or decisions, such as getting a promotion or hitting a specific number of subscribers. - Suggested focusing on what one can directly influence to avoid feeling discouraged or victimized. 5. **Integration into Daily Life**: - Integrated the goal into every aspect of her life using systems like Notion. - Kept the goal present in daily, weekly, and monthly plans. - Maintained accountability by sharing progress with her audience and regularly reviewing her progress. 6. **Weekly Planning Routine**: - Advocated for a consistent weekly planning routine to track progress and stay focused. - Reviewed achievements every Friday and set plans for the upcoming week on Sundays. - Emphasized that the habit of planning and tracking is more crucial than the tools used. ### Bullet Point Summary: - **Single Goal**: Focus on one goal at a time for better accountability and clarity. - **Impactful**: Choose a goal that significantly impacts your life. - **Reality-Based**: Set realistic goals based on past performance. - **In Control**: Pick goals that are within your control, not dependent on others. - **Integration**: Weave the goal into daily life and planning systems. - **Routine**: Establish a weekly planning and review routine to track progress.
