When I’m doing Slow Speed Maneuvers With my 2019 Gold Wing Tour I put the bike in Rain Mode, Manual Mode and 1st Gear. After I learned that about the bike I haven’t had any problems with Slow Speed Maneuvers. It’s like the bike knows that I’m getting ready to do Slow Speed Maneuvers. You still have to practice throttle control, rear brake and counter balance like any other bike but You just don’t need a clutch lever. You have two automatic clutches already in the bike. They work just like the Automatic DCT in a car. I think it makes the bike safer especially in cities where there is a lot of stop and go traffic. Without the clutch it makes the bike easier to ride and frees up mental space for road strategy. That’s why cars are mostly automatic now. Knowing this about the bike comes in handy with Slow Speed Maneuvers in driveways, parking lots and gas stations. I think that Honda needs to make a DCT alternative for all of there bikes. Once you learn to ride a DCT Automatic you will be hooked.

As a rider of a Goldwing DCT I am so glad to see you showing off your major skills. Now I know it can be done. Need to work on my body position and speed as I can see how that really help. No way am I near being able to do it with 1 hand and 1 leg as you did at the end. Bike built for comfort more than slow speed techniques but you showed that it can be done with lots or practice.
@jakegarrett8109

Should be easier with only 1 hand and 1 leg out (way better balance and higher stability, kind of like a cat's tail), it allows precise control, and fast response if you do need it. Its just like a rope walker with their arms out, definitely try it out, I'm sure it will be easier than you think.

I did the Total Control Course on my GW DCT last year. It’s crazy how far over you can lean those bikes. Your foot peg hits, you still got more to go before anything else hits. Also in slow speed maneuvers, I find Econ mode helps.

@@roadglide I mean that's how you ride dirt bikes, you often have one leg WAY outstretched, and other than hammering bumps where you need both hands you can also use your arm. Same thing riding quad bikes if you're doing wheelies (balancing in the fore-aft direction) you sometimes put your leg out behind you like a tail as well. Its simple physics. Now if you're going over harsh debris and don't feel comfortable using only one hand, of course use both, but feel free to get that leg fully extended to the side as it significantly helps with balance (you'll see people do this on mountain bikes riding across logs or thin boards)
@jakegarrett8109
@jakegarrett8109 2 жыл бұрын
@@roadglide Here is a good example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH6ToIR_h66sqNU then at 2:38 you also see he's doing better balancing with a leg extended. 3:27 shows the best example (also if he screwed up he'd be dead, so of course he was going to ride one leg extended way out). Now on road bikes, they are exceptionally twitchy machines with near 0 weight like his carbon fiber bike, and due to the aggressive lean angle its pretty hard not using two hands for equal force on the bars to go straight, but that's not as big of a deal on dirt bikes (also you don't need to pedal dirt bikes, so it makes it even easier). So this is not a new technique, but I think that's a cool video in general but also demonstrates the need for extending body parts for improved control and balance.

Well you made my day Greg. I bought a 2022 model and hope to take delivery this week. I spend at least two sessions a week going around cones and I was worried the dct would be compromising so prior to ordering, I took a 2019 dct for a test ride and spent a quick five minutes in a parking lot. It seemed to me that slow speed manoeuvres were doable and now after watching you play with the dct, I know it is doable! 👍

Great video! I have basically the same bike: 2018 DCT tour in white. I have ridden for 50 years (dirt, street), I take 1 advanced-riding class (like Total Control) a year, do MotoJitsu and other drills (cones in my trunk), and took a chance on the DCT as I found it in mint condition, w 6K miles in 2020. Took about 100 miles for me to stop wanting to reach for the clutch & shifter. Gotta retrain your brain for emergency (no time to think about it) stopping, swerve / avoidance, slow-speed stuff like this video, etc. Since the redesigned Goldwing came out in 2018 Honda sells 6 DTC Goldwings for every 1 clutch / manual Goldwing. Now that I have had it 2+ years and have gotten used to the DCT, I'll never go back to a clutch. I ride the 2-lane mountain twists here in Colorado and the GW is a torque monster. Love how it anticipates and downshifts heading into a corner, trail braking is a breeze too. Even got used to the E-brake.

DCT’s are very capable. As MotoJitsu says: practice! I’m an average long time rider on a now 2017 Africa Twin DCT which with his video help got me doing Police pylon parking lot competitions. Easy on the throttle & rear brake! (clutch can be a ‘get out of jail free’ card at times!) Off road when some others may stall (steep sandy hills) I could let the rear tire slow to grip & keep going. And even tractor trailers (with or without a driver -Fla-) are automatic now. They’re great in a parade when it often speeds up & slows down; dct = No carpal tunnel. Bottom line: different strokes for different folks. Love the many videos MotoJitsu!

So the trick is the throttle? I got the last of the previous generation Goldwing and it's so much heavier than the one that you rode. I got myself a set of plastic markers like the ones you have in the videos and I'm waiting for the rain to stop so that I can practice the same moves on my Goldwing. Linked brakes are so sensitive and I'm not used to it. When I test rode my Goldwing at the dealership, I stopped 2 arrows before the traffic light. I was riding a VTX1300S(R), so I tend to brake earlier. Countersteering is also much heavier on the previous generation. I found that out on the same test ride when I was trying to avoid a manhole cover. Countersteering is doable, but need lots of rider inputs. The current generation of Goldwings probably would be easier to execute a smoother countersteering. Edited to add, thank you for the video.

I could add something to this, from personal experience, since I ride a big maxi scooter after getting over riding superbikes for 13 years: many automatic bikes and maxi scooters have combined brakes on the left leaver (pedal). Buy a brake kit that separates the rear from the front and you will be able to do this maneuvers with more precision than on any manual bike. If you have a foot pedal, move the brake to the left hand with a kit for that (like stunters and track riders do) . An automatic (DCT or CVT) manual operated rear brake bike is the ultimate low speed maneuvers machine.

@@mikec9162 I can be your source, but it's more an issue at speed, not just sitting in gear. I have a DCT NC700. First bike, and when riding around subdivisions in my learning phase, I accidentally hit the kill switch going around a corner. Came to a stop, it was showing in 2nd or 3rd gear and wouldn't shift out of it, but rolled freely. Pushed it several blocks before I checked Google. You just have to walk it backwards a few feet with the key on. I watched it drop gear by gear as I rolled it back maybe 6 ft in total. Maybe it's happened to me twice now lol. Killing the engine in a drive mode while stopped has never been an issue, just the couple of times my hand got the better of me and hit the kill switch at moving speed. I use the key, and have turned it off in gear many times in my driveway, and it rolls downhill in neutral once switched off with no problems.

@@roadglide only if it gets killed at speed. It will electronically get stuck in gear, but rolls. Just a computer thing. Roll it backwards with the key on, and you'll see the gears drop till you hit neutral. Then you can reengage whatever mode you ride in. Has never happened if I cut the engine off while stopped, since the bike goes into neutral automatically when sitting still.

Sweet bike! Did I hear those pegs scraping? You bring up a good point, too. The brakes are indeed linked, so one might not be able to do those Police Motorcycle cone drills where they're bouncing on the rear brake to get through tight cones. I liked how you let the bike over as far as it could and you "counter" leaned with your foot off the lean side peg. The instructor I had suggested, like you said, throttle and rear brake, but my skill couldn't make that work. I hope you and your buddy try some Belt courses on it too. The bike is absolutely amazing. Notice the no forks front end? Did that make a difference for you? Also, the rear end suspension has the electronic preload adjustment...did you guys play around with that? Maybe the 2 up with luggage setting might give you a degree or two more lean angle because the rear end is higher/stiffer? Those are six piston 320 mm dual disc brakes and since it is a 2021 I am thinking there's a lot of meat on them so plenty of brakes. 850 pound bike, Greg! Thank you to you and your buddy for this.

I had to watch this, because I am thinking about an NC750X DCT. Also I watched Palladino's video about the same motorcycle. And to be honest, combining his opinion with the need to set the motorcycle in manual mode, first gear, and deal with the throttle sensitivity on these DCTs, I might go for the classic transmission. Further more, it is 1000 euros cheaper...

Have you ridden a Honda Nc750 DCT? Is it the same feeling(-minus the weight). I want to learn slow speed maneuvers and I have the opportunity to buy a 2015 Honda NC750 DCT. I kljust wonder if it’s a good bike to learn on. I’m a big buy so it maybe perfect fit for me down the road, but a good beginner learning motorcycle? I dunno

The previous model would U turn within the width of two parking spaces, but this new version is much more difficult to turn that sharply..

Great. My livewire is a bit easier. Was almost all to sit at full lockout. The bicyclist in me still wants to put my foot down. Really trying to learn to use the throttle to lift the bike up.

That is a sweet bike! I sure hope you didn't tip it over . That is the bike I really want but at 25000 plus I will have to wait a little bit... I have been riding for 25 years.... And I finally think I have achieved gold wing standards. Meaning I think I can ride the gold wing.

Appreciate the skill and yeah always more entertaining than wheelies but those automatic bikes ( to me atleast ) are really a nasty piece of work. In my riding style I feel comfortable covering the clutch and having a choice of which break I want to use. Good skill though.

Part of his problem is that the DCT gearbox is pretty much a black box as regards when the clutch engages or slips, and in order to not stall it will slip the clutch when throttle and brake are used together simultaneously, putting it under tension, but it won't warn the rider about excessive wear - nothing pops up on the screen. Another vlogger who'd been practicing this kind of riding wore out 2 clutches doing this kind of riding, and although they replaced the clutch on his first DCT Goldwing, when it happened again recently they said no, that kind of riding is abusive, and they wouldn't replace it. The bill was $3000 and he's understandably upset. As Motojitsu demonstrates, it's perfectly possible to make the bike turn, but this latest development raises the question "Yeah, but will I be paying $3000 every 3 months if I do this?" Now, I was talking about this with an instructor on the Honda Adventure Experience in England on Thursday & he said he'd never had this problem, and they'd had AT DCT bikes since they came out. I asked about dragging the rear brake & he said not to, so I'm thinking it's probably a case of get the speed right, right gear & commit to the turn, balance it & try to avoid braking with the gas set..?

I have a dct ctx700 . Yesterday was the first time ever scraping pegs but when I was practicing it only took maybe 15mins to get it. After 1hour I was so much better i could turn in two car spaces and not three. I was wondering if the dct was easier or not . I keep it in sport mode and auto and its perfect
