Στη διάρκεια του Τρωικού πολέμου οι Αμαζόνες ήρθαν να βοηθήσουν τους Τρώες μετά τον θάνατο του Έκτορα (απο το δόρυ του Αχιλλέα) με επικεφαλής τη βασίλισσά τους (κόρη του Άρη - θεού του πολέμου) την όμορφη Πενθεσίλεια. Ο Αχιλλέας βρίσκεται αντιμέτωπος με την Πενθεσίλεια η οποία πολεμούσε φορώντας πολεμική μάσκα. Η Αμαζόνα του έριξε το κοντάρι της, το οποίο έγινε κομμάτια μόλις χτύπησε στην ασπίδα του Αχιλλέα. Στη συνέχεια έριξε και δεύτερο κοντάρι, αλλά ούτε και τότε τον πλήγωσε. . Ο Αχιλλέας τότε κατόρθωσε να την τραυματίσει θανάσιμα βυθίζοντας το ξίφος του στο στήθος της.... Στην αρχή η Πενθεσίλεια πολεμούσε με επιτυχία, αλλά στο τέλος νικήθηκε. Λίγο πριν προλαβει o Αχιλλέας να την πληγώσει όμως, η βασίλισσα των Αμαζόνων άοπλη προσπαθεί με το αριστερό της χέρι να εμποδίσει τον αποφασισμένο Αχιλλέα. Αν και γενναία, η στάση της δείχνει μια τελευταία ικεσία... Αφου πρώτα την πληγωσε θανάσιμα ο Αχιλλέας, τότε η ομορφη Πενθεσίλεια βγάζει τη μάσκα απ το πρόσωπό της.... Η ομορφιά της Πενθεσίλειας τον γέμισε μελαγχολία και όσοι ήταν παρόντες δεν είχαν καμιά αμφιβολία ότι ο Αχιλλέας είχε εκείνη τη στιγμή ερωτευθεί τη γυναίκα που σε λίγο θα πέθαινε από το δικό του χέρι. ... Όπως λένε οι γραπτές πηγές ο Αχιλλέας σήκωσε τη νεκρή βασίλισσα και την έβγαλε από το πεδίο της μάχης. Το σώμα της, μαζί με τα πτώματα 12 άλλων Αμαζόνων, τα παρέδωσαν με ολόκληρο τον οπλισμό τους στους Τρώες κι εκείνοι τα έκαψαν και έθαψαν τις στάχτες με όλες τις τιμές....
