I ruptured my Achilles’ tendon yesterday while golfing. I tried to get our of a bunker and hear the “snap”. At the hospital X-Rays confirmed the rupture. I go to see the orthopaedic doctor in a couple of days. In the meantime, icing to relieve swelling. Thank goodness not a lot of pain. This is a GREAT instructive video. Thank you so much!

It’s been nine months since my L Achilles rupture. I did physio for some time and then the surgeon said that in order to recover fully I needed to bear on my L leg while supporting myself at a sink with my arms. After some months I did not make any progress. I went to my physiotherapist and she said that my L calf muscle had weakened and thinned considerably and that was the reason I was still limping. I am now on the regimen of exercises to strengthen the L calf, buttock and the whole leg via toe press machine at the gym or with a tensor band while at home and also partial squats to strengthen the glutes. It is vital to strengthen the weakened leg muscles as soon as possible after the pain subsides.

I am very active and tore my left achilles playing basketball and lost practically all muscle on my calf. It has been 7 years and the calf is still not as strong as it use to be and is noticeably skinnier than the right calf. If you tear achilles, Just know that if you want to get calf back to original state, you have to do massive amount of exercise and it will take a year

I was a highly active 245lb, 48 year old with a athletic build. I suffered a severe rupture of my achilles tendon in a sporting event nearly six months ago. And though I have been enthusiastically involved in my rehab, it has been extremely slow. I wasn’t weight bearing until 3 months. As a result I lost 2/3 of my calf muscle, and have been trying to rebuild it every since. Show rehab work with an actual injured patient. What the text book says is far from universal application due to a myriad of factors such as degree of injury (Tear compared to Rupture), post op complications, physical health at the time of injury, weight of patient, amount of muscle loss in injured leg/CALF, and most importantly age of patient. As it stands your description is much to simplified and should be revisited. Full recovery can take anywhere from 3 months to 1 year (+\-).

Hey buddy! Hope the recovery went well. I’m 24 and had this injury while playing basketball. It’s a complete rupture. Going the non surgical route. How long until you could walk without a limp ? I have a cast for one month. Brace for 6 weeks with wedges. And then I can weight bear. Any insight you could provide would be great

It sucks sucks sucks. I am 9 week POST op for a neglected Achilles Tendon tear (surgery 4 MONTHS after injury). I required a graft, plus an FHL tendon transfer. I am still in my Achilles boot at 90 degrees, weight bearing since last week. Still no walking or bending of the ankle except for unloaded ROM exercises. Getting electrical stim and massage at PT.

Hi how is your Achilles doing now? Did you have any stiffness in your ankle joint that restricted you from performing dorsiflexion past neutral and performing squats and lunges? Did you have any tightness in your longus and extensor parts of your legs? What is your PT doing to help you in your special situation?
@ow-my-achilles1106
@ow-my-achilles1106 3 жыл бұрын
@@jasmineegardner3499 I've been out of PT since February 2021, used up my insurance visits. I don't have full dorsiflexion in the foot, and might never get all the way. I can walk around and ride my bike no issues so far. Still do not have full power int he right calf either. The ankle is stiff at the limits of my range of motion, and is sore after any exercise. I still do dorsiflexion stretches weekly, and especially before a ride. I cannot do a full lunge on the right side, there's definitely a "limit" because of the surgery and the graft. But the repair is solid. I did 6 hours of cleaning a camper, top to bottom, ladders, climbing, yesterday, and it was sore afterwards. But during the normal course of the day I don't think about it. I've definitely used the ankle pretty hard, loading up the calf muscles during hard rides, but never felt there would be a problem, no pain. So I think my surgery went well, and the repair is strong. Hoping I never get a repeat rupture!

@@ow-my-achilles1106 hi did your Achilles ever loosen up after you started to walk on it? For example in the beginning it was very stiff and tight and now you can move it as in wiggle it around or it is stiff tight? Did your PT do any gastron to loosen the tendon?

@@jasmineegardner3499 My ROM is much better than after the surgery. I had nerve bruising that limited how aggressive my therapy could be early on. Really sore ankle near the tendon graft site. Even today I KNOW there's something up in that foot. Likely forever. I've come to understand there's no such thing as 100% recovery where Achilles tendon rupture is concerned, especially for older folks, so don't expect it.

So I'm 6 weeks out from my surgically repaired Achilles tendon rupture, while the doctor was in there he removed some bone spurs and shaved down the heel bone and then anchored the tendon with a couple of screws, he said I'll never know or feel there even in there, but at week 6 I'm starting to walk on it but I do get heel pain after a few minutes of walking, it does go away fairly quickly, but does anyone have any experience with the heel pain and how long did take to go away.
