Each year we remember former ACLU-DE President Gerald "Gerry" E. Kandler (1932-1985) and honor the work of members of the community who exemplify his tireless commitment to the defense of all Delawareans’ civil liberties.
This year we are so pleased to be honoring Dr. Ann Aviles, Associate Professor at the University of Delaware and Co-Chair of the HOMES Campaign DE.
Dr. Aviles’ research, teaching, and organizing experiences include addressing housing and educational inequality. Dr. Aviles has worked with community-based organizations to advocate for educational access, equitable funding, and anti-racist systems and practices with, and for, students and families of color experiencing homelessness/poverty, incarceration, and mental health issues. She is the Co-Chair of the “H.O.M.E.S.” (Housing Opportunity Mobility Equity Stability) Campaign, which advocates for affordable housing and to end homelessness in Delaware. She recently helped to found the City of Wilmington Autonomous Tenants’ Union, which works to advance tenants’ rights in Wilmington and beyond through workshops and community organizing.
