What a great project!!!! Really love this piece for granddaughters birthday...fair warning, I'm going to steal your design with much thanks! Learned a lot here and really appreciate your total use of a single chunk of lumber. It is the use of these smaller pieces of wood that keep our hobby/business firmly in the green side of the economy. Well done my friend! Keep the vids coming, and thank you so much for all the hard work of putting them together.

Earl Rumble Hi Earl. Many many thanks for your comments. You are more than welcome to steal the design that I stole from looking at hundreds on online ;-) You are correct that it is an awful lot of work to create videos like these, but I enjoy it and it makes me look closer at the quality of my turnings! Cheers Tom

Tom - a truly beautiful project! In addition to admiring the beauty of the finished piece, I also appreciate how you used scrap wood wisely. I saw Mike Waldt's video a few months ago and you both created excellent pieces. I especially like your drilling jig to hold the drill bit perpendicular to the piece being drilled. That is an absolutely brilliant tip from which all wood turners could benefit and I will build one for my own shop straight away.

+Herb Les Klug Thanks for watching and commenting Herb. Your kind remarks are truly appreciated. After too long an absence my latest video of a three footed bowl will be online later today. I hope you will consider subscribing and staying around for more! Cheers Tom

That is a great project, I need to make a few of these for my wife and daughters! Thanks for the inspiration!
@acolyteturner9 жыл бұрын
Cheers Erik. I have made a few of these now, and if I have learnt one thing it is that they need to be smaller. A lot less height and a little narrower not only looks better but is a touch more practical. Cheers Tom

Again, I say nice job. Perfect little gem for the wife and daughters. As for rules for finials I've never heard of them. Yours looks just fine. Thanks for the video Karl Richards

Very nice Tom. I'm going to make one of these for my great niece for her birthday. I was going to try to turn one out of one piece of cherry, but I'm going to change to parts like you did. Well done :) Jan .....

+Janice Kneule Hi Janice It's perfectly feasible to do in one piece (if I recall Mike Waldt has a video), however I'm a tight old Yorkshireman and this way uses far less wood ;-)
@janicekneule59797 жыл бұрын
I've seen Mike's video. :) So I may try it both ways. !!! :)

Hi Joseph, thanks for commenting. I've made a few of these now and I might suggest making them a little smaller than this one. They don't need to be as tall or as wide. Cheers Tom

Hello Tom. Nice little project and looks like fun to make. Glad to hear you think somewhat like I do. Not sure what all the design rules are, but doesn't matter really, I turn to please myself. Thanks for sharing, Fred

Fred Graber Thanks Fred. I'm sure some turners are 'critically exact' about these things, but life too short ;-) Cheers Tom

Very nice piece Tom! Now I know what my Granddaughter is getting for her birthday! As for the rules ... there's too damn many of them that we don't always follow. I say if you turn a finial and it looks like a finial, walks like a finial and quacks like a finial ..... ! Take care, Dave

That was a very nice project! love your spindle work (and also your flexible dust collector, where did you get that black tube??), to my sorrow (or luck...) my wife doesn't wear any jewels, only her engagement and wedding ring, nothing on neck, nothing on ears, or any other body part, so.... but I do have an 8 year old who's very interested in plastic jewelry... Maybe she could use one... :)

yuval lahav Hi Yuval, many thanks for viewing and commenting. My wife also only wears her engagement and wedding ring, despite all the jewellery I have made over the years. I have a step daughter (of 22 years) who only wears necklaces, but luckily my mother will be happy to have the piece! I don't remember where I got the tube from, I think it may have been a local supplier that has sadly closed. However I see them on many online sites, I think they are called 'dust goosenecks' or something similar. If I find one I will let you know! Cheers Tom

Hi Tom,What is that red plastic thing and where can I get one. I live in the UK and if it is only available here it is not a problem
@acolyteturner8 жыл бұрын
+John Fithian-Franks Hi John, thanks for watching and commenting. I think you are referring to this: www.teknatool.com/products/Other/Chuck_Gauge.htm It's a multipurpose marking tool made by Teknatool / Nova Chucks. It has many useful functions from centre finding to gouge grinding angles and chuck aligning etc. It's available from most Nova Chuck suppliers here in the UK. If you can't find it locally let me know and I'll try and find a source. Cheers Tom

John Walsh Hi John. You don't say where you are, but i'd take a guess at Ireland, in which case Axminster tools do them and I have also seen them in Lidl. www.axminster.co.uk/axminster-drill-guide-kit?gclid=Cj0KEQjw7r-rBRDE_dXtgLz9-e4BEiQATeKG7OCz_SSwmtTF5e2YpPmrdhRMW50g6zealNvvi793tCoaAog78P8HAQ Thanks for watching!
