acorn antiques was maybe the funniest and best parody of the traditional soap opera ever seen on our tv screens. a very gifted comedienne and comedy writer. she will be missed.

Leigh Richards The 1st Acorn Antiques was actually written by Victoria Wood on the spur of the moment, to fill in a 5 minute void in one of her shows. The rest is history

Despite my grimacing and gnashing my teeth at most television “comedies”, this particular stroke of genius always had me falling out of my chair. I was just this minute watching it on TV, just a couple of clips, and then had the brilliant idea of accessing it on here. Wonderful stuff! I feel an Acorn Antiques binge coming on! 🙃

Victoria Wood, what a genius. One thing that haven't managed to find anywhere on KZbin. My mum certainly wasn't religious but she was a Harry Secombe fan, she loved his singing so she used to watch 'Highway ', just for that. She often used to say jokingly "l wish someone would buy poor old Harry a new anorak" He seemed to wear the same one every week! WELL l think Victoria Wood must have thought the same, she did a skit of this with Scottish tenor Ian Wallace, walking down a country lane, singing a hymn type song wearing an anorak a la Harry Secombe and the song ended with something like "God made me this lovely anorak for me to wear each day!" Both mum and l burst out laughing at this. 🤣

Acorn Antiques. - Episode 1 When Babs asked Mrs. Overall How’s your husband after his accident. - Dead , Is so final, isn’t it. Not a smirk between either of them. True actresses. What a genius show this was. When Clifford said to Babs, There’s something I haven’t told you, I go Bell 🛎 Ringing on Wednesdays. Haha 😂 You can’t do better than this show for a snigger 🤭 or two.

I watched a program about this, and they said just how hard it was to deliberately shoot this badly. Many of the people working on these shows were professional, so doing it right was second nature, but the humour was that it should have been shot badly, and it was hard to deliberately muck it up with school boy errors. But their effort really pays off.

'National treasure' is a wildly overused term these days but in Victoria's case it's so very true. That's life (Wish i was 14 again), those two tv plays with Julie Walters,Wood n Walters, As seen on TV, An audience with, Dinnerladies, Housewife, all TV gold. And a wonderful who's who stock company too..

Julie Walters "Stole" every scene. Her character was based on Amy Turtle (Ann George) in Crossroads. Coincidentally Julie and Ann shared the same home town of Smethwick, pronounced Smerrik.

Reminds me of the 'Supermarket Matters' audio podcast, and the old tv parody 'Soap' with Billy Crystal from ABC, but without the alien-baby and the guy that thinks he's invisible, or a set of Whoosh! doors. Is there a Mad Jasper, "The Major", loony, rambbling character?

I used to find Acorn Antiques a bit cheesy and Mrs Overall a bit sad until I worked somewhere the office manager was also PA to the director and volunteer manager and couldn't delegate much as if she was a martyr. She had spent her childhood taking care of her younger half siblings and step siblings and taking care of everybody else was her life script. She even did overtime as a cleaner in the same place when the cleaner was on holiday. Mrs Overall reminds me of her.
