I demonstrate how to turn an acorn box, a simple woodturning project suitable for novice turners with some turning experience. I turn more upscale boxes but wanted to make a more basic box box with a slip fit I might sell at a lower price point than my larger threaded acorn boxes
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases from my Amazon shop www.amazon.com...
You can download demonstration handouts, downloadable copies of articles I have published, and other useful woodturning information available on my website www.mikepeacewo...

One small little correction. OB Shine juice is 1/3 Alcohol, 1/3 Boiled Linseed oil, and 1/3 Shellac. Not sure anybody is going to get the receipe from this video but if they do it won't turn out right. Very nice project. You may want to notate the correct mixture at that point in the video.

Loved the picture of sequence you posted. I gave it a screen shot. Also liked the edited voice over VERY professional! I have turned a few of these in years past but it took me so long to think it thru. I will follow your sequence. Your price point cmts were helpful. When I demo for my club I feel I am so slow. This will help me.

Let's face it. You and I will never turn as fast as Nick Cook, Mike Mahoney or Richard Raffan. If you enjoy a steak, why be in too big a hurry to finish the meal. Sometimes it is about the journey.

Very satisfying for a one hour project, Mike. For your larger, threaded acorns what is the maximum diameter you will thread, and choice of wood? Bernard.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 4 жыл бұрын
About three inches. I like a dark wood for the husk. I like a lighter figured wood for the bottom. Most any dry domestic hardwood. Large exotics are pricey.

I really do not sell them much. They have gone for $75 -$250 at auctions for club and symposium fundraisers. I would price at $150.

I have a one way chuck for a little larger projects, and I I have pin jaws for smaller projects. I’m kind of looking for something in between the 2 sizes. Do you have any suggestions
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 4 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with all of the Oneway jaws. I use the Record Power 35mm jaws like these amzn.to/3kz8ZqB on a RP or Nova chuck. Great if you want a 2d chuck.

Hello Mike. Hope this finds you and yours doing well. I have a turning apparel question for you. I live in the upper Midwest (I used to live in your fine state) and the winters get pretty cold and I turn a lot in the winter. I need to wear a jacket in the winter but I’m always concerned about getting a sleeve caught up in the chuck or between the tool rest and the blank. I wear tight sleeves but I was thinking of trying one of those leather arm protectors that bow hunters use to protect there arms from the bow string… Your thoughts? Do you have a video or something on your web page concerning the topic? If you or your viewers have any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated! 😊 Thanks for your time Mike. Ron

Hey Mike, I always love to watch your videos, this one especially, nice easy project. I scaled it down to the stock I had. What do you use to determine the scale of lid to box? I kept turning till it looked about right. There is a biblical reference to the acorn . It'll make a nice Christmas gift with the quote inside.
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 4 жыл бұрын
NoneWhat is the reference? I don't have any set relationship on these boxes. Like you, just turn til it looks right.

What are the starting blank sizes?
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning Жыл бұрын
I make threaded ones typically about the size of my fist. These are probably about 2" diameter for the bottom and perhaps 2 1/2" diam. tops.

Was that stock piece about a 3x3?
@MikePeaceWoodturning
@MikePeaceWoodturning 4 жыл бұрын
These are smaller starting at about 2 1/4 square for the lid and about 1 7/8 or so for the base. You can scale up or down but I would not go larger than 3" or wood movent may interfere with the fit.
