Doris Day's voice perfectly compliments Gordon MacRae's.

I was astonished to find that this song was WW1 vintage, written in 1916 ... beautiful.

Well, that would be about right for the era in which this movie is set. It begins with Bill coming home from WWI which ended in 1918.

I first heard this song on Downton Abbey and it was set in that era.

My late mother didn't care much for Doris Day, but I very much enjoy listening to her sing especially with Gordon MacRae.

typical Hollywood having someone age 32-33 playing someone 18-19
@madness77654 жыл бұрын
Actually, this 1953 movie is set in 1918.

@@califdad4 True. But unless one can come up with the names of a pair of young movie actors under contract for Warner Bros. in 1952 who could sing equally well to be cast to play these roles, the movie might otherwise not have been made at all.

Wow i really think Doris Day could've played a good Mary Poppins like Julie Andrews did

Wrong accent
@charliechilders66302 жыл бұрын
Why must this character only have the cockney old English accent that Julie Andrews had for a long time? Day would have been enchanting in this role and the story and character could have been modified and tailored for her special , enormous talents and the beautiful star she was. That’s how Hollywood has always been.🤔😍🤗😬

Also, did you not know that she was the first and most wanted choice for The sound of music? Also was the first choice for South pacific and The unsinkable Molly Brown? Also, she was the first choice for Mrs. Robinson for the Graduate but she turned down the role.

Doris Day is not as elegant and has less warmth than Julie Andrews, she also has a less mysterious aura, Julie Andrews is so very special and so unbeatable in Mary Poppins, she has the right mixture of everything. Doris Day has completely other talents, she is very likeable and has her own charm, more part of our world, than Julie Andrews charm is. So no, for me it would never have worked with her as Mary Poppins and Emily Blunt doesn’t work either. Doris Day would also not have been a good choice in sound of music, but at least better than in Mary Poppins. I am glad, we have both, Doris and Julie and I think they knew about their abilities and therefore chose absolutely rightly!!! And I am very happy about that!!! Well done Doris, well done Julie!!! Let’s celebrate both!!! ☺️😊

She was not the most wanted choice for sound of music, Christopher Plummer was and he and Julie Andrews have maybe one of the greatest chemistry in whole Hollywood!!!! So, no 😂🤣 Doris Day (and I live her!!) was definitely NOT the most wanted for the Sound of Music. It was and it got to be Julie Andrews, sorry to disappoint you in this…. And this was a very good choice for the movie wouldn’t have been as successful with Doris Day in it, and had she played Mary Poppins (and Walt Disney had never ever thought about Doris Day, but wanted Julie Andrews so badly for Mary Poppins, despite her never taking part in a movie before, that he waited for almost a year for Julie to be able to do Mary Poppins!!!! He only wanted her and no one else ever!!!! He saw her on stage in Camelot and went backstage to ask her to become Mary Poppins. And she said she couldn’t, as she was 4 months pregnant!!! And he said - ok, so we wait for you until the child is born! Julie then played Mary Poppins when her daughter was 4(!!) months old. Can you imagine!!!!! Clever, clever Walt Disney, what a feeling he had for great movies!!!! The old Disney movies all have something special and are of a charm, that lacks nowadays unfortunately. I am grateful for what Walt Disney did for children. I don’t like today’s Disney, it’s not of the same quality like the movies Walt made. Anyway, glad he knew what he was doing).

The waltz tempo on Downton wasn't the way it was supposed be. However, every other tempo (such as this one) just drags, and it's boring. Downton's version was the best, imo.
