Calamity Jane (Doris Day) sings "The Windy City" to her comrades upon her return from Chicago, where she had gone to entice the actress Adelaide Adams to perform at the local theatre. It's a beautiful number that reveals both her pride for Deadwood City and its people, as well as how sheltered she has been in the comfort of her little town. Coming down from a realization of how her masculine behaviour is perceived by other people, and how other women act and behave in other places, she may also be trying make a defensive claim about who and what she is.
Lyrics:
I just blew in from the Windy City
The Windy City is mighty purty
But they ain't got what we got, no sirree
They've got shacks up to seven stories
Never see any Morning Glory's
But a step from our doorway...
We got 'em for free!
They've got those minstrel shows,
Purty ladies in the big chapeaux
Private lawns, public parks...
For the sake of civic virtue,
They've got fountains there that squirt you!
I just blew in from the Windy City
The Windy City is mighty purty
But they ain't got what we got
I'm tellin' ya, boys...
We got more life in Deadwood City
Than in all of Illinois!
On the street was a dancing fellar
All dressed up in a suit of yellar
And the dance that he did there
Went something like this:
[tap dances]
You should-a seen me a-wind'er shoppin'
A-wind'er shoppin' with eyes a-poppin'
At the sights that you see there, yes sirree
Press a bell and a moment later,
Up you go in an elevator
Just as fast as a polecat a-climbin' a tree
I heard claim hundreds came
To a thing they call a baseball game
Cigar stores, revolving doors
Men wear sideburns, and they ought'er
'Cause a haircut costs a quarter!
I just blew in from the Windy City
The Windy City is mighty purty
But they ain't got what we got.
I'm tellin' ya, boys
I ain't a-swappin' half of Deadwood
For the whole of Illinois

I call her The Elegant Mother as she was a mother in most of her movies .. kind, loving and yes Elegant. She retired in Carmel, CA where she bought a cute hotel only to allow pets in as other hotels in town were not allowing pets in. She represented the best in our American culture. I knew she broke both her legs badly, and wasn't able to walk for 3years, which meant she couldn't carry on her dream as a professional dancer. And during them 3years instead listened to a lot of records and started singing instead. But I didn't know it was a train that caused her injuries, crazy.

Doris Day was such a fantastic dancer! I've long been a fan of hers but somehow never saw this film until recently. I can't get over how she jumps up and down on the bar and at 2:16 she stands up from a cross-legged sitting position with no assistance! That's strength and talent! :)

Watch the lift up into the upper balcony, and then when she is lowered back down again. On the way down, I cannot see any safety equipment and it even seems that her full weight is already across the railing before the two cowboys grasp her arms. Yet she puts out her arms with perfect timing and confidence. Incredible.

Classic old person comment. Remember when your parents would say similar things about the artists you grew up listening to? People said the same shit about Elvis.

She is incomparable as Calamity and i can't think of anyone who could get anywhere near her level. As a direct contrast she was magnificent in "Love Me or Leave Me" opposite the great James Cagney.

My 1 minute of fame with Doris Day. In 1976 I worked in the sales department for the magazine and paperback book wholesaler of Los Angeles: Sunset News, later ARA services. Occasionally, celebrities would stop by with their agent, after getting their “tell all” biographies published. “Doris Day: Her Own Story” was just out and she and her agent came by for a promotional effort. After her agent spoke, he opened up the floor for any questions by the sales staff and execs. I was upset that no one, including myself, asked any questions or had any comments. I think most were awestruck and shy at her celebrity status and presence. The agent said something like…”Well ok, get in a line and Ms. Day will autograph a copy of her book for you.” Since I was so disappointed at our silence, I got at the end of the line, thinking that I could ask or say something to her. When it was my turn..I asked her, “Do you have any desire to get back into films?” She stopped signing her autograph on my copy and looked right into my eyes and said, “No when I was doing the movies, I was always asking questions like…’ Did I say that line right? Do I look ok? Is my makeup on right?’ It was always I, I, I. Now I have a chance to do something for others.” I understood what she meant and just said..”Good” 35 years later, I wrote to her and mentioned our meeting and what you just read of our words to each other. She replied by sending, to me, an autographed color picture of herself. I first saw her on TV in “Calamity Jane” and would play “Secret Love” on my mom’s piano. I was about 12 years old then.
