So many speaker designs violate the spacing vs crossover rules. I am amazed that those designs still can sometimes sound good. I am a big fan of the co-axial / fullrange approach.

We had snow in Montana September 20th....don't worry it's hovering 40-60°f mostly and I'm still mountain biking. We're glad we're not in Texas when we see your summer temperatures! Sunset at 4:30 makes it music season;-) Thanks for the education I always learn something on this channel. Even if I don't build a speaker set I understand the design of my favorite speakers. The dual-concentric KEF LS50s have a wonderfully coherent sound!

I talk slow too... not because I'm from Texas but because I'm senile. Bob Carver told me to use a straight line approach to my new speaker design in 1982. That was a good choice. Amazing imaging and getting coherent squarewave response.

A test rather than music is to feed a white or pink noise signal into the amp and then move your self up and down , side to side and move nearer and closer to each speaker most people will get a shock how bad the phasing are on most commercial ones

I’ve made my own set of speakers proper to learning of you, made the rookie mistake of having the tweeter 2” above the mid. That was merely done to keep it evenly spaced. 😩

hi mr richie very interesting video thx... would you say a tweeter placement is a problem if in a 3way speaker the tweeter is in the middle ? i.e woofer down the tweeter next and high above is a midrange...assuming they are all like 2 inch from each other? is it gonna harm the imaging? what would be your opinion on the subject.? thx man

We’ve already been wearing pants and sweatshirts up here in MA for a while now. lol I’d love to build an N1 Kit when the parts become available. It’s actually the GR Research speakers I’d been looking at. How do you feel about the D’appolito array, considering the X-overs have been done correctly? I’ve learned more about speaker building and design in the past months than the rest of my life, and I cannot thank you enough, Danny! I love Tech Talk!

The MTM style arrangement can work really well when designed correctly. And with two drivers sharing the load the settling time is decreased, sensitivity is increased, and power handling is increased.

I used to have a pair of British Mission speakers. They are/were known for having the tweeter below the woofer. (Instead of above like most other designs). What effect would this design have on vertical response?

So lemme guess, it's somewhere around 70 - 80 degrees f if you had to break out jackets? We don't do that until around 40-50 here in Montana, but that's only if the wind is blowing or it's cloudy. Was near 45 today and all I was wearing was a T-shirt and a long sleeve for work. Plenty warm enough. Love the explanation on timing. Not something that a lot of folks thing about.

Do you have rule of thumb for the c-c spacing such as 1/2 wavelength of the crossover freq or do you just get them as close as you can?
@dannyrichie9743
@dannyrichie9743 4 жыл бұрын
Rule of thumb would be to find the wavelength of the center to center spacing on this chart: www.soundoctor.com/freq.htm Then be sure that your crossover frequency is below that wavelength.

Danny - how did you accomplish this with the Skinny 6's?
@dannyrichie9743
@dannyrichie9743 4 жыл бұрын
In the Skinny 6's the top driver plays full range (to the top) with just a first order high pass filter. That upper driver then crosses to the lower four woofers in the 250Hz range. So just one driver covers a wide range with four covering the bottom end.

@Danny Richie Another great video putting technical speaker & XO design into layman's terms. :) Yeah, concentric/coaxial drivers have their own set of problems. Do you have any experience with the 5" BMS 5CN1620 concentric cone midrange/compression driver tweeter? Based on Erin Hardison's (ErinH) of Medley's Musings testing and use of this combo in his car audio install over on DIY Mobile Audio Forums, I'm working on a studio monitor design with the 10" Ciare HW251N midbass that he also used. All indications look and sound great so far if you keep the HPF on the midrange high enough (~300Hz) so that the midrange cone excursion doesn't modulate the HF too horribly because of its function as a waveguide for the HF compression driver.. www.bmsspeakers.com/index.php?id=bms_5cn1620CIARE HW251N

I know you are very knowledgeable at audio. But I think people overthink audio far too much. I have what most people would say is a GARBAGE cheap budget as it gets(ish) setup. Heck my subs are in my closet (well 2 15's are) and another 12 is on the other side of my room. And I got to say it sounds REALLY REALLY REALLY damn good for what it is..It puts EVERY cinema costing millions of dollars to shame!! And it is in my bedroom with no sound deadening at all. Saying that Ill share my setup. Room size is like 10ftx10ft ish. Old denon 7.1 running a 5.1 setup with dayton audio speakers. 2 floor speakers (100$) a center (30$) and 2 rears (40$) 1 100$ 12in car subwoofer on a car amp with a dc power supply (200$ invested) and two 15in car audio 1000 watt subwoofers on a pro audio behringer ep 2500 amp in my CLOSET!!! (380$ total) It is literally a bunch of crap all put together and it will blow most peoples mind! It all blends perfectly as far as I and others can tell. My neighbors complain when I watch movies and It is behind a block wall underground in a basement!!

There is no way you can pinpoint the lowend, no mater how good of a woofer you have, low frequency will allways come from everywhere in the vecinity of the woofer, mid range is not that forgiving, but still not as directional as a tweeter...talk much out of your rear and? I've testet what you say, and there is little to no difference in measured sound, and none in the actual listening...I've tried to give your BS the upper hand by mooving the tweeter to another box, and unless I moove the tweeter in or out, or take it 10 inches or more horizontally, I did not get any difference...So as long as they are more or less in the same plane, and not more than 10 inches apart, there is no difference, I've used an infinite baffle and still did not noticed any difference, except the baffle difference, no timing issues. But then again, you are the same guy that agrees to magic thousen dollar cables....so I would not expect any less from you!
