It was a very surprising day when I finally realized that I hated rosewood guitars... all the Internet loves to exclaim their huge tone and I spent thousands and thousands wondering why none of them sounded good...then I played a j45 standard and turned it over to find that sweet, lightweight, punchy, clean beauty that is mahogany. The sound I had been searching for all along was cheaper, lighter and the one few people talked about.

I've noticed that Pete plays more over the sound hole or towards the bottom, while Mick plays from the bottom of the sound hole and more towards the bridge. This in its' self will make a difference in the sound of the two guitars. They could play the exact same guitar, and it would sound different just because of this. I'm sure it's not intentional, but it is what it is.Otherwise, great job guys. Love it!

Hard to beat a good workhorse j45. I bought a standard brand new at GC in 2017 and it has inspired so many great ideas, riffs, and songs! Not to mention the J45 is considered to be the most recorded acoustic of all time. A real bond! Love it.

I was fortunate enough to inherit my dad's 1952 J-45. It's tough playing other acoustics. It's pretty beat up and has seen many miles of road but plays like butter. A customer brought it into his store in a garbage bag during a thunderstorm. My parents had just opened a music store and didn't have a lot of money at the time and they offered him 300 and he said "Thanks but no thank you". He then went to leave, saw the rain pouring down and changed his mind, fearing it'd get ruined in the thunderstorm. Pretty lucky

The J-45 standard just has a cool edgy sound about it. All the strings have an equal presence and separation. The only way to create a scoop midrange is in your hands. Thats why so many players use them Id suspect. Everyone can get their own personality out of the even eq platform it provides. Making the player uniquely interesting to the listener and themselves.

Nothing records better. Live a Martin D-28 is a monster but recording it can be a real challenge. The J-45 is just easier to record, thus the most recorded guitar. Russ Barenberg (bluegrass player), plays a war era one with a laminated maple back and sides.

Hi there is a few words from my side. I have been watching here in youtube for the sound of acoustic guitars. 2 years ago first time as a beginner, I liked Martin as I went on watching almost a year and I got to play Martin D28, HD28, OM28, OOO28 etc but my experience of playing with these guitars, was not appealing to me at all, rather frustrated. Then I picked up Taylor 814CE Deluxe and suddenly I started liking its sound and feel of playing on it, specially the feel of the comfortable neck and also, the typical mellowed sound. Anyway, it's almost 1 year ago but these days, I had the feeling that I should own one J45 nice sunburst from Gibson as its sound is very exceptionally pleasing to my own ears as I listened to each play on J45 standard with Mahogany as there is no Chime as many other high end acoustic guitars used to have. That's the bottomeline and I look forward to play on it myself and hopefully buy it on the pandemic settles down.

Nice video, thank you. Great A/B check. Like most, I prefer the mahogany J45 standard. For me, Gibson have never really succeeded with Rosewood the way that Martin have - they seem to just add it for "bling" and the deeper part of the sound that r/wood adds is a bit late and somewhat vague on such of their guitars that I've tried. That said, I love the mahogany Js and I have a Gibson J35 - it's like a 45 or 50 but has the bracing of the Advanced Jumbo, a more "open" sound, a "player's" guitar rather than accompaniment - it's also substantially cheaper than a J45 or the Advanced Jumbo. Nice, nice video.

You don't typically hear that acoustics with scalloped bracing having clear note separation. Scalloped bracing typically produces overtones which is like a chorus effect. But scalloped bracing over mahogany does this....circa the Martin D18GE and the 000-18GE. And someone who is a Martin snob - these J45's have their own tone that is really good - when you find a good one.

Tim O'Brien frequently uses a J50 to play bluegrass. I get the association with power bluegrass (as volume can be extremely important), but some very well-respected bluegrass players use J45s, especially in context where there are multiple instruments involved - it's just another sound at their disposal.

The best I have heard face to face is an original owner 1957 J-45 ( he is 90yo, still plays ) . To give an inflation adjusted perspective , at the time the J-45 cost as much as his station wagon . ( He wouldn't have spent it on himself, but was gift from his late wife .)
