Controlling the sound in your recording space will give you the most significant improvement in quality for recorded voice-over. And it doesn't always have to be complicated or expensive to accomplish. In this video, we see how a few minor adjustments can significantly improve the quality of the sound. Voice-Over audio engineer Lenny B walks you through a real-life scenario as he assists a professional voice-over talent with his recording space. Follow along as Lenny changes the physical location of the voice talent, the placement of the furniture in the room, acoustic treatment in the recording space, and tests different microphones. Finally, hear the difference it makes to the final recorded voice-over sound.

About Lenny:
Audio engineer, producer, marketing specialist, and radio broadcast professional in Southern California.
A custom processing preset by Lenny B for voice-over is a series of plugins explicitly tuned for your voice, in your room, and on your microphone. To compete in today's voice-over world, you must ensure that your demos and auditions are extraordinary. Voice-over artists at every experience level from all over the world are fighting to win work. However, if you don't have a professional sound, you will lose out to someone who does. Custom voice-over processing can take your audio presentation quality to the level necessary to compete with the pros. Instead of taking it upon yourself to tweak the parameters like EQ compression, DeEssing, and saturation, you can hire a professional voice-over audio engineer to create it for you. Once you have the custom preset on your system, you have "The Sound" every time you press the record button.

Absolutely amazing video. Thanks a lot for a valuable lesson! Been fiddling around with new acoustic panels I bought realizing (not so) soon enough that they don't help my situation that much and or I don't know where to place them properly :D

lenny i like your voice it sounds great.. what mic are you using? and how do you mix your vocals to get this amaizing sound.

The microphone used in this video is a Neumann TLM 103. As the video explains, acoustic treatment on the walls of your recording space is most important to get the sound you're after. The microphone is not as important as the room treatment.

Lenny, if you wanted to make sure improvements would you recommend Audacity, GarageBand, or only the plugins you mentioned here?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 9 ай бұрын
Hi @tinlylittlefilms3042, I'd need to hear your audio to be sure, but I would say this. I would say the DAW doesn't matter to ensure room improvements sound the best possible. Mic choice and plugins would help optimize the most after room treatment. Acoustic treatment is the most significant factor! I hope that answers your question.

What do you think of the Auralex EditMAX kits for voice overs. Could this be used with nice bass traps in a small room or would you recommend only broadband acoustic panels for best results?
@HeyLennyB

From my experience, it's ALL about the Broadband absorbers. By the way, I have a new course on the subject in the next several weeks.

Mr. Lenny B, if the initial “small adjustments” (with replacing the first microphone, changing to 90-degrees angle, & moving around the acoustic-foam) were not possible, could some of the noise removal tools from Izotope Post Production Suite been the next best option at (1) removing the noticeable room tone/room reverb in the vocal recording? NOTE: Regarding the noise removal tools from Izotope Post Production Suite, I’m referring to using- and placing- the noise removal tools at the very first stage of the plugin side-chain (before the EQ, before the Compressor, etc.).

Hi Lorenzo, yes they could be used. However, you'll always get a better result by resolving the problem (in the recording space) rather than masking the problem with a restoration plugin. I usually put any restoration plugins first in the chain. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching.
