According to toms hardware the chrome s3 card you have may not of been released as they were purchased by VIA (chip and intergrated cpu manufacturers) in 2004 because cards with a s3 chrome gt 440 name appeared in 2006 thats all the information they seemed to have on them.

Hey, do you remember the s3 chrome 540gtx?? This was the latest graphic card made by s3, I wish you tested the s3 540gtx, please..maybe this video card was a greatest goal compared to Intel Larrabee or some tries as artic sound.. I'd prefer the return of s3 graphics than Intel discrete graphics

S3 used to sell the Deltachrome, Gammachrome and Chrome cards on their own website. Though all released for sales, the amount of units must have been very low because I tried to buy them at the time and were always out of stock. The Deltachrome is S3's initial comeback card but it lacked performance. Gammachrome fully fixed the performance issues concerning the fixed function pipeline part of the chip and the card was competitive in old games that didn't use shaders too much. The last Chrome cards were actually very competitive with the cards of ATI and nVidia (in the same price bracket obviously) and are still used to this date in the VX11 chipset.
@F2FTech6 жыл бұрын
Very interesting. To your knowledge did they ever sell on Newegg? Or was it direct only? This preview sample is probably one of very few sent out for review. I want more information on it, there’s just not much from what I’ve seen in that one review.
@MrMilli6 жыл бұрын
Considering I'm based in Belgium, that's going to be very hard to remember (no Newegg here back then). If memory serves me well, only the last generation Chrome cards reached retail stores. goo.gl/ukRc88 A decent GammaChrome review: goo.gl/zZLvL9 A S3 interview from around that time: goo.gl/TquFsm
@F2FTech6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yeah that was the review I was referring too. It’s the only one I can find. I wasn’t able to find the card for sale on Newegg or anywhere else. Maybe they sold those models direct only, like you said? It’s funny you mention the S27. A buddy of mine just posted a link to a Scott Wasson review of that card. Single and multi-GPU. techreport.com/review/9898/s3-multichrome-dual-gpu-technology It’s interesting to hear him say the interface was polished and the GPU usage overlay was a great idea as well. Sadly it’s performance overall wasn’t that great and lack of SM 3.0 support didn’t help. Would love to have one or two 😉

Yeah, the mystery surrounding these cards is what got me so interested back in the day. VIA's CPU division and whatever is leftover from S3, lives on in Chinese company Zhaoxin. Curious to what they will bring to the table in the future. I just saw this on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrome_S20_series#Retail_products And also this: goo.gl/63YPzF
@F2FTech6 жыл бұрын
Awesome find. Looks like they were sold direct and possibly Newegg, though I can’t find the listing. I did find the review on the Nitro variant as well. Now, I’m wanting to find some s27s...I wonder how many were sold over their lifetime? It’s interesting to see what happened to the company after VIA.

Just found out your channel two days ago, because i bought a Power Color 4870x2, and i was looking for some vids on that old beast, im rebuilding my "dream" 2009 ish pc, and i had to have that card, only need a case now, and that pc is done. Anyways, love the content, keep it up!, i watched like ten vids in a row, very well done!.
@F2FTech6 жыл бұрын
Thanks brother. I hope your 2009 PC build turns out the way you want it. Love the 4870 X2. Not in Windows 10 of course 😉
@santi07976 жыл бұрын
Windows 10?? yikes, put that thing as far away as possible!, of course it has the best os after windows xp, windows 7, it goes great with the build. At first the idea was to use my original Ati 4890, that i bought in 2009 with my first "gaming pc" (always had gaming pcs but not 100% high end pcs). Unfortunately as with the majority of cards from that era, my 4890 died, so the 4870 x2 was chosen for its replacement. The build is almost complete, it has a Xeon X5650, Asus rampage Gene 2 X58, 6gb of ram, one of the last true reliable hdds on the market, a Hitachi 1TB hdd from 2010, before they were sold to wd and turning HGST, 250gb samsung ssd (once you go ssd you cant go back...), and the case, wich is not so nice and has to be raplaced. I found a guy that has a huge supply of older Ati and Nvidia cards here, but he is asking 100usd for a 3870x2..., quite expensive i think.
@F2FTech6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like an awesome build. I’m with you on the SSD. It’s a must for me nowadays 😉. $100 sounds steep for a 3870 X2. I’d watch ebay if you want one for less.
@santi07976 жыл бұрын
Yesm it´s quite pricy, unfortunately i dont live in the US, i live in Argentina, so it is quite difficult to find cards for cheap, i do travel to the US at least once a year, and every time i go i buy things from Ebay and Amazon. Probably gonna hoard some 5970 and 3870x2 next time i travel haha.
