It has to do with the architecture of the hardware. The 600 and 700 series of Nvidia GPUs are based on the Kepler design, while GCN dates back to the 7000 series of AMD GPUs, which share the same design with the 500 series AMD GPUs. The big difference between the HD 7970 and the GTX 780, is that the 780 gets massive gains from overclocking, while the 7970 is already near its maximum overclock. I have an EVGA GTX 780 Classified and the GTX 670 FTW. The 670 can be overclocked to 1289Mhz, while the 780 will overclock to 1241Mhz (it used to OC to 1289) and the VRAM of both cards can be OC'd between 350-500Mhz over stock. I'm pretty sure that if he had overclocked the 780 Lightning and Ghz Edition 7970, that the results would favor the 780. I know that my 780 Classified on my secondary PC gets much better results than what he is posting with the 780 Lightning.

Great way to go about the benchmark! And you were right, GCN gen one and 1.1 [hawaii] just suffer at tessellation, setting 8x-16x helps with tacked on poorly optimised effects like hairworks, and older games, but metro truly is using tessellation as more than a tackon. Luckily from polaris onward they do not suffer nearly so much. Ouch to low vram users. Thanks for another great video!

GCN doesn’t suffer at tessellation, they just suffer at Nvidia’s way or tessellation(in other words, insanely high levels of high detail tessellation designed to run well only on Nvidia cards) They used to beat Nvidia cards at it until Nvidia released Gameworks.

I'm really surprised by the 6950 / 6970, considering it's drivers are outdated... I'm used to see the 7950 / 7950 etc. age way better than nvidia cards, tough. As for tesselation, I think it got fixed with the R9 285 and R9 380x cards for AMD, at least I remember the R9 285 being advertised with significantly better performance in tesselation.
@Pushing_Pixels5 жыл бұрын
The HD6000 series was advertised as having improved tessellation performance (compared to the 5000 series), but it was still a major weak spot. Terascale just did not do tessellation well at all. GCN improved things, but they were still behind Nvidia. It seems every generation of GCN was touted as being better at tessellation than previous ones, and they are, but they're still behind for some reason. That's why whenever Nvidia supports the development of a game they pile on the triangles. Many more than are needed.

7970 is a beast especially the 6GB GHz version. The factory OC 1060 only beating the 390 by a bit is kinda underwhelming. Pretty sure a Radeon 590 would beat it by 15-20% (I have a Radeon 590 and they are very, very good 1080p cards).
@ArtisChronicles5 жыл бұрын
II II I'm not surprised that it barely beats a 390 since 480s and 580s trade blows with the 1060 depending on title. r9 290 and r9 390 perform very similarly to the rx 480 and 580. 290x does outperform a 480 though and I'd assume a similar result for r9 390x though.

@@ArtisChronicles 580 is about 10-15% faster than a 390 on average. A 390X is about on par. A Radeon 590 is about 10-15% faster than a 390x. The 590 is a bit of a weird card (I have one). Even though it's literally just a faster clocked 580, the performance jump can be quite large. Up to 20% over 580 in some games. Not exactly sure why this is to be honest. In DX12 it gets very close to a 1070 quite often. Overall an excellent 1080p card, and much nicer to use with DX12 than 10xx series nVidia cards.

The GT 1030 would be more playable if it was limited to 720p and maybe lower. While the 1030 can do 1080p its just not really suitable for it, that 64bit memory controller is part of the reason. Wish they'd used a 128 bit memory controller, but it would probably be biting on the heels on the 1050. From What I can see on the data you gathered VRAM plays a major role in performance (with DX12 negating this slightly on AMD card for some reason) anything under 4GB on Nvidia cards and they take a big hit wile using DX12 on an AMD card seems to knock this performance wall down to 3GB. Obviously not everything but it's significant. Also as you go up in graphical detail you'd think the VRAM would play a bigger part but it looks like GPU horse power does. Anyway what do I know. The framerate difference between dx11 and dx12 on the 1060 in your personal benchmark run is a CPU bottleneck most likely. Standing on top of the tracks and staring at the train head on places basically that entire map into view, and it HAMMERS the CPU. In my own testing, DX11 outperforms DX12 pretty substantially in CPU bound scenarios.
@F2FTech5 жыл бұрын
It could be part of the issue. I noticed when staring directly at the fire barrels FPS drops dramatically. Once you get past the train/barrels and continue looking in the same direction FPS does go up quite a bit. I know people don’t like to hear it, but just because there is 99% GPU utilization, doesn’t mean there isn’t a bottleneck elsewhere. I’m going to be putting together an 8700K build soon, so I’ll definitely go back and test, assuming patches don’t dramatically change anything.
@DeToxCommunity5 жыл бұрын
@@F2FTech Yeah. I haven't tested at low/medium settings which might substantially reduce CPU load, but at extreme/ultra on a 1080 ti at 1440p, I was able to get a CPU bottleneck quite often in that map with a ryzen 1700.

In older games pre-2014, the 780 will easily best the 7970. Unfortunately for the 780, the newer the game, the closer they become. Kepler needs optimizations to be fully utilized. It’s SMX arrangement is a lot different vs. the SMM’s arrangement In Maxwell and Pascal. The latter two look closer to GCN, which most games are developed on. That being said, there are a handful of newer games where the 780 comes out on top, but not many. Synthetics, like Heaven and Valley are faster on the 780.

I usually play the game on Dx12 because the frame time is way more consistent than Dx11. With Dx11, I get huge stuttering issues, but with higher frame rate average. Very frustrating!

Man I'm trying to find a solution for the stuttering and hell yeah it's very frustrating .I hope that dx12 solve my problem .

Benchmarking should be done in the Caspian Sea or Taiga levels.

Yeah, Wolga isn't really hard demanding the gpu. Had around 100 fps average there, and around 40-60 at Taiga

You don't see any performance improvements on tessellation limiter enabled, unless you turn on hairworks on AMD cards
@joeykeilholz9255 жыл бұрын
Tesselation seems very flawed in this title. Check out hardware unboxed's content on optimizing the game for reference. Also, frame time measurements would be appreciated. :)

just got a $25 R9 280x and it crushes the 1050ti and with a overclock 1200mhz 1625 memory it runs all the latest games pretty good for a 2011 tech gpu
@F2FTech5 жыл бұрын
Very nice. That’s a nice OC as well.
@thefinalroman5 жыл бұрын
it does 1190mhz with no voltage added and 1600-1650 memory so i just do 1625mhz because it doesn't gain in benchmarks. With voltage it does 1225mhz but it's in a $50 HP Server e3-1240 with a proprietary 400watt psu with one 6 pin and a bunch of sata/molex to 6 pin/8 pin adapters So i don't really do the voltage thing don't wanna blow it up lol.I did a 6 pin to 8 pin but the wires got hot So I split the load between the molex,sata and 6 pin and the wires are cool under load and I don't do any power limit increase.I ran 8 hours Resident evil 2,5 hours Shadow of the tomb raider and 5 hours of Apex legends and the overclock is stable. Temps stay 60c no cover and 65c with side panel on. not bad for a $75 pc XFX DD cooler is actually not bad either .

I could be wrong but I feel Metro Exodus has some optimization issues on PC. Its definitely got it's share of bugs. I kept having CTDs and hard freezes when I played Exodus on Nvidia's latest driver. I ended up having to roll back drivers and haven't had an issue with crashes of any kind since. IMO, GameWorks features on or off hurts over all game performance as well. It seems like every damn game that uses GameWorks,HairWorks always has some kind of damned performance problem whether its on or off. It seems all it has to have, is the GameWorks coding embedded into the games. Just an observation...

Can you check with GTX 960 and 970 4gb versions???Good Video!!

I hope to have my hands on a 970 at some point soon. Not sure about the 960 though. Maxwell is missing from the lineup
@johnk71345 жыл бұрын
@@F2FTech i have both the 960 and 980ti and used to have the 970. 960 is around(40%-45%) half of the performance of the 980ti at least to the games i have tried...not a bad card, but in any case 970 is much better. Hope you will have one so you can compare with the 580 (want this one :; ) as well as the 7970.
@KhromTX5 жыл бұрын
I hate the Exodus benchmark because it uses the Taiga map which is literally the worst performing map in the game. In every other level I ran 20FPS higher than Taiga consistently. Fuck Taiga.

It’s also really buggy.

Gonna grab my old 680 2gb to test it this weekend., because I just can't believe that an 580 is beating the 670, 1Gb more of vram or not.
