You are doing great! The best thing you can do is get your perennial plants planted on your new property first thing! They will give you years of harvest. I watched a ton of videos on each individual plant on how to plant and care for so that I was super successful

Hi Becky! Newbie here. I’ve been watching the last year of videos (oldest to newest). I think I may need to limit my Becky time each day. The other night, I had a dream I had a new greenhouse. While looking over all of the little baby plants coming to life and bragging to my dad, I handed him a tray and said “look! We have tomatoes! Wait, those are freezer meals. My husband and kids absolutely love that I've stumbled across your channel. We've been renting in different places for the last 8 years and I've been thinking I'll never get the garden of my dreams and 1 disaster after another keeps happening but I've been saving my creamer and coffee containers and buying cheep soil every other grocery trip and I'm slowly but surely getting the garden I want and my kids are just as excited as I am about it! Idea: Chickens and starts. When releasing the chickens, put the starts in the chicken coop and close the door thus safeguarding the starts without looking the chicks in the smaller space.

Yes Becky, you can harvest your poppy seeds from your plants. My grandmother used to do that every year and always had beautiful poppies every year.

I grow a variety of breadseed poppy specifically for this, the seed heads don’t automatically open so it helps you keep more of the seed 😊 apparently you shouldn’t eat California poppy seeds or corn poppies but should chose varieties of Papaver somniferum only for eating.

Hi Becky you can fix your seed starting soil by mixing in vermiculite and perlite that would keep the soil light and moist🌱🌱so it doesn't turn into a brick. 🕊

Wonderful dear Becky... It has been a battle! After being sick for weeks, my tomatos look like they were on stilts. Got home today ready to try and fix what i could.... And my cat had knocked over MANY of the plants and broken off most of the branches. I have been sitting at the table trying to salvage what I can in a pile of dirt, stems and leaves, almost completely defeated. Then I checked KZbin. Now, I'm watching your video, trying to remember to give myself some grace and know that I can still have a garden. I have learned many lessons. And this years garden will be worth the struggles! I made the Hawaiian pasta salad, and it's delicious! I also made the chicken teriyaki, and it's delicious, too. As a matter of fact, it's the best teriyaki sauce I've ever eaten. Hi Becky, your drive and energy are so motivating. Thank you for sharing your projects. A tip for your seed starting trays, they're purposely designed to leave that 'air space' between them. It helps to prevent the starts from just sitting in water. Pop out one of the little 4 packs or whatever size of starting pots your using, use that hole to fill the tray with about 1/2 gal of water or until it reaches the bottom of the pots. I go about 1/4 inch up the side to ensure there's enough water to wick into all the pots. When I see they're all wet at the top I check to see how much water is still in the reservoir. If a lot I'll dump the extra into a bucket to use for next time, if just a little I'll leave it there to help raise the humidity. Take care can't wait for the next adventure, and the progress on your yard is amazing!

I planted lettuce just for my rabbits this year. lol My hub and son don't like homegrown lettuce. They say it's too bitter, but the rabbits love it! The chickens and pig get all the other scraps. Hi Becky, the white machine that got stuck is called a ‘skid steer’ or a Bobcat. Ours is invaluable here on our farm. My husband worked in the plant here in Bismarck,ND where they’re made.

In Australia we call them bobcats. Generally we have the tyres instead of the grippers. We do have them put away for when we do need them. Where we are we never ever see snow and we have a lot more dryer months than wet. We’ve been in drought for a long time and this year alone we’ve had more rain than ever but still everything is so dry. Feels like we can’t win. Our soil has gone to almost clay in majority of our 8 acres. Slowly starting to improve it bit by bit. Loving the videos

I've never grown zinnias from seed other than tossing wildflower seeds somewhere in my yard, but this year, I started seeds indoors. Back in mid march...my seed starts are quite tall now as you can imagine 😅 Hopefully I can get these beauties in the ground soon. Also started about a dozen delphinium flowers. They took quite a long time to germinate, but I have close to 12 delphinium sprouts, some already sprouting more leaves 🍃 My favorite flower, I'm also a little obsessed with fanfare gaillardia. Those little red, orange, yellow tubular petals really draw in the pollinators and are a beautiful show.

Here is my list so far: sunflower, sugar snap peas, carrots, lettuce, petunias, lavender, red cabbage, green cabbage, cosmos, cucumber, zinnias, marigolds, tomatoes, hollyhocks, bunching onion, radish, strawberries, corn, okra, basil , celery, potato, purple hull pea, blue lake bush beans, squash, Tabasco, poblano, sweet banana peppers, coleus. Most from seed or volunteer from last year. Most excited about celery, carrots & sugar snaps 😁 Thanks for your inspiration ❤

Becky, the replacement item you got is just compost so that's why it was so dense. The Vermont Compost brand you keep referring to is a potting soil mix. Just wanted to share that because you keep referring to it as "compost". You probably don't want to start seeds or plant anything in just pure compost like the replacement item you bought is. Breadseed Poppies or Papaver Somniferum are the type of poppies that produce edible seeds used in breads. I ordered some for my garden this year. Can't wait for Poppy muffins.

Have you tried golden beets? I've never liked beets but I love golden beets. They taste kinda like sweet corn with much better nutritional qualities. I planted about 10 different varieties of beet this year. I never liked beets, but my hub kept asking for them, so I ordered some from Azure and have tried preparing them in different ways and sure enough! I finally found a way that I LOVE to eat them...even the standard, red kind. I peel and pressure can them and when I want some, drain and toss with some lard or tallow, chopped garlic, thyme, and salt and pepper and roast them in the oven, usually with parsnips, carrots, and potatoes. OMGEROSH...now we fight over them. We tried the yellow beets and they're even BETTER, so I was very excited this morning to see my row of baby beets breaking the surface! I can't wait to try all the different kind.

I smiled yesterday when I came into my kitchen and was disgusted! I decided I was just going to dig in and reset my kitchen! I moved all the canisters, etc . Totally cleaned everything! Do you give your chickens a dust bath with diatomaceous earth during the winter? It probably isn't an absolute necessity with such a small flock, but they certainly do seem to enjoy it. It also gives me peace of mind knowing they probably won't be likely to get mites and become horribly uncomfortable before I'm able to see visible signs of an infestation. I also sprinkle a very thin film of DE on the bare wood every time I clean their coup before adding their bedding. DE is probably the most effective form of pest control available, and it contains nothing but skeletons of ancient marine life.

Becky, try cinnamon basil. It's great for pesto or on top of fresh-sliced tomatoes, marguerita pizza, etc. It has a strong flavor, not like cinnamon but basil-y with a small kick. And the plants themselves are so beautiful.

Hey Becky! If you want to learn more about soil blocks, I recommend that you follow Lisa Mason Ziegler ( The Gardeners Workshop). She very well could’ve been the person that Nicole followed to learn soil blocking methods. I know I’ve heard Nicole reference her in the past. I think Lisa sells soil block soil and supplies. She also teaches how to mix up your own soil blocking soil. There is a difference in just seed starting mix and soil block mix.

That’s interesting. Must be the pollen or a specific variety. I know everyone has different asthma triggers. But I find eucalyptus globulus oil with steam is great for my lungs and congestion🤷‍♀️ (I have severe lung problems so I use it for temporary relief a lot).

I’m trying to do the same this year as far as planting what we enjoy and use. I love growing Okra, for example, but we still have 4 gallon bags of Okra in the freezer that we haven’t used. It is truly a learning experience!

The heavy equipment is a "Skid steer loader" Don't know what they call that standup one. Think I'd rather use the skid steer than the stand up one. I haven't been able to grow basil outside but I have grown some inside. Mammoth basil grew extremely well for me. I haven't grown enough varieties to choose a favorite. Chamomile, California poppy (not a true poppy), and Borage are reseeding annuals that will add to the annual "weeds" in your garden. it's easy to remove any plants you don't want though.

In a pinch you can use Solo drinking cups for seedlings, use a drill to put drainage holes in the bottoms - you can stack a few cups together and drill them all at once

Hey Becky, are you not worried with all of the precipitation that you get in the pacific northwest, that the wood beds will only last 5-7 years? Hi Becky- Love your enthusiasm! Question- why did you put vermiculite ontop of the soil? I had read that it can keep the soil too wet and promote the growth of green algae. I'm new to soil blocks- LOVE them and the reduction in the amount of plastic that I use. Wetter soil makes better soil blocks. Having a bucket of fresh water to regularly rinse the block maker off is helpful. Enjoy! ! !

49:55 Hi Becky, I can't tell from the video if those are iris or daylilies, but it will be obvious when they grow a few more inches (or if you want to dig one up and check). If they are irises, you might need to dig them up and replant, because they like for their rhizomes to only be buried about halfway in the soil. If they are buried too deep, they might not bloom for you.

I would love to see a video with any kind of advice for how and when to sow seeds directly in the ground. I mean I can read the packaging, obviously, but I don’t know what vegetables and herbs are hearty enough to start seeds directly in the ground without, going through the whole in-house process because I don’t have the space for any kind of set up like that. If you have any advice, that would be appreciated. I’ve been doing trial and error. I planted carrot seeds at the wrong time last year, so I left them over winter and got a great surprise with big carrots, I love the journey🥰

You could also use the cinder block holes to plant garlic and onion. I did it this year and it just adds space to your garden (not that you need more garden space; but to me you can’t have enough garden space!)

You can get a poultry netting electric fence, there's several brands, we like Premier 1. And add that around your existing chicken coop/run to give them more space but to keep them still contained and out of the garden, you can even move it around some if needed depending on the space around the coop. ☺️

I love love love my electric net fences! I didn't get the name brand, but have two and used them to raise my piglets. After we ate the two boys, we put the girl in just a double strand wire fence and are now using the net fencing to protect the new garden (we expanded and are planting on the old pig pen spot, since they tilled and weeded it for us) from the wild rabbits and deer...and my chickens! lol

Zinnias are my favorite flower to plant in the garden! Haven't planted any yet this year, only my vegetables so far! All are looking great. I even have tiny tomatoes,bell peppers and jalapeños forming. Cucumber's and squash are flowering. I can't imagine having a garden your size with a new baby! You are super woman! Keep up the beautiful work you are doing. Can't wait to see it all in full bloom!

We are almost done with our chicken coop and will take our chickens out there for the day until we have a 2nd fence around our garden and chicken area to help save them from predators. My chickens will be so happy to be able to dig in the dirt and clean their wings. I transplanted today and planted another set of Poblano peppers and some Hibiscus seeds I saved from one that was on our property when we bought this place last June. Hopefully they will germinate.

Hi Becky, I do so enjoy watching your garden & cooking videos! I didn't do much gardening growing up & later in life raising 4 children was enough to do that. But if I had the internet & someone like you to watch & learn from, I would have done more. Now 73yrs I did some pot gardening last year, & they were starting to grow nicely, I had tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, parsley, beans, etc. But I fell at our pool & broke my femur at the end of June. Had to be 6 weeks in rehab. So my husband tried to keep watering, but it was so hot in July that he just couldn't keep it up, & with everything else he had to do. So that's my gardening experience! But I am going to try a few things this year but more flowers than veggies! I hope it will work this year! Thanks for all your cooking recipes, too. And keep the videos coming. I love watching them! I didn't see anyone else say this, but as you said zinnias are super easy to grow. And you do have a bunch of seeds, but when those run out... I bought seeds once and have just saved some of the zinnia tops every year. I store them in a paper bag over winter and then scatter them in the soil once it warms up. I'm in zone 4...not sure if that translates for you.

I am excited about doing my garden in grow bags since my yard isn't suitable for raised beds. I am also excited about the garlic that I planted in the winter, it is the first time I have planted garlic. I am getting starts from our local farmer, I want to grow cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and some herbs to start. Then whatever looks good!

When we were looking at the seedlings of basil (in the pepper tray) the left corner of that grow light area is dim. Those peppers under that dim corner are small...your grow light might could use to be moved out to the left, on that shelf. It would be more likely to have plenty of light in the center under the meeting grow lights then on that left corner.

I love Thai Basil too! Last year I planted it next to my Genovese Basil and it ended up cross pollinating. Not good...at least to me. I guess that's common, but I had no idea. Time to start over and plant them a good distance from each other. Lesson learned and wanted to pass that along to anyone who, like me, didn't know.

There is a variety called Breadseed poppies that have copious amounts of edible poppy seeds. Nice to see dirt, we just got another 6 inches of snow and more to come. 😊

I love how your landscaping is coming along. I absolutely LOVE Basil. I grow 5 varieties every year. Italian Long Leaf, Thai, Cinnamon, Holy, Genovese. I've been expanding my herb garden every year. This year, I have all my basil varieties, German Chamomile, Greek and Italian oregano, English, German and Lemon thyme, Rosemary, common, golden and pineapple sage, English and lavandin lavender, bee balm, lemon balm, flat and curly parsley, onion and garlic chives, peppermint and spearmint, French tarragon, cilantro, and dill. I'm doubling my medicinal flower garden and berry bush garden this year too. Adding 3 more raised beds primarily for trellising winter squash. You are so right about the chamomile. I started with 2 small plants 3 years ago and now have a 10 x 6 chamomile bed and have given many away and transplanted some to different areas of the property. I love having a LOT of it because I make my own tea, lotions, salves and tinctures with it.
