What a masterpiece and of course there the stunning stunning voice of our late lamented Harry Dean. Genius on so many levels. Thank you both for this.

Isn't this divine? Ry combines so much beauty and sadness and dreaming and sorrow and yearning...and what a tone he gets on that guitar! Such a masterpiece, this one.

Obviously a brilliant musician all round as he has such a feel for the songs he makes or re-imagines and creates something that doesn't feel like a cover when he does one. His soundtracks for films are legendary. Gets so many bands of oddballs together for concerts, (and such great ones). A collector and rememberer of tunes that would otherwise disappear in time. He is one of the USA's National Treasures of music.

Probably too late for a response, but did Harry Dean Stanton sing in this song? It would not surprise me one bit, but there's no definitive information on this. (Loved HDS!!)

Crystal, I couldn't agree more with your comments. He KILLS me! I had the embarrassing "privilege" of interrupting his show at McCabes in Santa Monica one evening because the Fire Dept. came for my car (which was on fire). Would have been much worse if he hadn't been so cool about it. What's not to love about Ry Cooder?

People spend endless amounts of opinion on who's the greatest guitarist of all time, a totally fruitless argument really as there are so many parameters and different musical styles that no one can possibly satisfy everyone. I will say this however, I've never heard an electric guitar with so much emotion in its tone as that heard in the solo of this song,
@josbruls8 жыл бұрын
The lyrics are not entirely correct, but what the heck! That slide guitar is just fabulous, just like in "Lipstick Sunset", that John Hiatt song that Ry helped him out with.

Lyrics There's a place where I've been told Every street is paved with gold And it's just across the borderline And when it's time to take your turn Here's a lesson that you must learn You could lose more than you'll ever hope to find When you reach the broken promised land And every dream slips through your hands Then you'll know that it's too late to change your mind 'Cause you've paid the price to come so far Just to wind up where you are And you're still just across the borderline Up and down the Rio Grande A thousand footprints in the sand Reveal a secret no one can define The river flows on like a breath In between our life and death Tell me who's the next to cross the borderline En la triste oscuridad (In the sad darkness) Hoy tenemos que cruzar (today we have to cross) Este rÃo que nos llama mas alla (this river which calls us further away) But hope remains when pride is gone And it keeps you moving on Calling you across the borderline When you reach the broken promised land Every dream slips through your hands And you'll know it's too late to change your mind 'Cause you pay the price to come so far Just to wind up where you are And you're still just across the borderline Now you're still just across the borderline And you're still just across the borderline Source: LyricFind Songwriters: James Luther Dickinson / John Robert Hiatt / Ryland Peter Cooder

Amazing to think this was written 31 years ago. It's never been more timely or relevant than it is right now with what's happening in the United States. I've recorded my own cover of it here. This isn't just a pop song; it's a folk song. It's not just good; it's important, and people need to keep singing it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3PEZ6esiaiSjtk 私はこの歌が31歳だとは信じられません。 現在米国で起こっていることはすべて、これまで以上に重要です。 私は自分のバージョンをここに記録した。 この曲は重要なものであり、私たちはそれを歌い続ける必要があります。

This is a song I believe to release the hurt and pain to leave and have and keep all the memories you have had as a child..then leave your beloved land where you were born and decide to leave for a better life abroad..tears stain your pillow and the memories of loved one's remain inside your head..phone calls and tears remain, but Life, goes on..a new life awaits you..a promised land..

Mr. President, I will write about the type aid I would need from you in a letter to TYT. (It won’t be money or resources) I am working on my plans to help stem hard-drugs, right now. And, finishing the solutions for homelessness in NZ. If the homeless initiative works I am giving it to Australia and Britain to trial too; feel free to use it, should the actual operation succeed in its testing... as it stands, hard drugs poses the greater challenge... thank you.
