@@225marklin3 I agree that it's underrated. Just look at lists of the top songs of this genre, and it's very often left out. Many I know hadn't heard it when I first played it for them. Maybe it's a generational thing. This was released two years before I was born, so if you were in your teens or 20's you probably know it well.

Not really…this very album, ‘Late for the Sky’ is entered into and currently resides in the ‘Library of Congress’, selected by the libraries curators and the ‘distinguished members’ of the National Recording Preservation Board. This album, named by the title song ‘Late for the Sky’ was-and is-considered an extremely important work and so it resides, in perpetuity, in with the great albums ever recorded. So, no-it’s not just our imaginations. Great song, timeless album, preserved…

For musical writers , 26 years of age for most is at their peak. This was at or near his peak in writing and for many others also. “It’s just the way it is.” This doesn’t mean that there are exceptions .

Just because you don't listen to it doesn't mean it isn't out there. Listen to Julien Baker, Jason Isbell, Laura Stevenson, Phoebe Bridgers. It goes without saying that few can approach Jackson Browne's innate talent for songwriting, but there are a handful of folks who are certainly on the threshold.

So glad to see Jackson perform one of his early songs. Like so many of them, it is about his life. He was married and his wife killed herself, leaving him with a small child. I always thought that was the subject of this song, although it could be about unahppy love in general. Still, it's a personal thing for him. Listen to his music up to and including The Pretender and you'll hear his thoughts set to thoughtful tunes. He's always been one of my faves.

All the words had all been spoken And somehow the feeling still wasn't right And still we continued on through the night Tracing our steps from the beginning Until they vanished into the air Trying to understand how our lives had led us there Looking hard into your eyes There was nobody I'd ever known Such an empty surprise to feel so alone Now, for me some words come easy But I know that they don't mean that much Compared with the things that are said when lovers touch You never knew what I loved in you I don't know what you loved in me Maybe the picture of somebody you were hoping I might be Awake again, I can't pretend And I know I'm alone and close to the end Of the feeling we've known How long have I been sleeping? How long have I been drifting alone through the night? How long have I been dreaming I could make it right? If I closed my eyes and tried with all my might To be the the one you need Awake again, I can't pretend And I know I'm alone and close to the end Of the feeling we've known How long have I been sleeping? How long have I been drifting alone through the night? How long have I been running for that morning flight? Through the whispered promises and the changing light Of the bed where we both lie Late for the sky Source: Musixmatch Songwriters: Jackson Browne Late for the Sky lyrics © Swallow Turn Music

Awake again I can't pretend And I know I'm alone And close to the end Of the feelings we've known I've never understood how someone so young could have written such an insightful, cutting song.
