Weird how cities with so much homelessness, poverty and lack of jobs are also so expensive to live in

Because there are a lot of tourist and people just waiting to give handouts to homeless. If people stop giving money and food to the homeless I'm sure there will be less.

That's the thing no one who's trashing these places never really gets into. The reason these places have so much homelessness is because the rent is so extremely high. And the reason it's so high is because so many people want to live there. If they were such hellholes why do so many people with pretty high incomes stick around?

I lived in Oakland for several years, but in 2018 I couldn't take living there anymore! I'm a retired police officer from LAPD Los Angeles Police Department, and crime had rapidly increased dramatically in Oakland to the point I stopped going anywhere at night, I tried my best to have someone with me when I went places there even in daylight hours for extra safety. I was pretty much a prisoner in my own house not to mention I had also been a victim of a couple of property crimes in the last two years I lived there! I had my car broken into twice, someone broke into my garage and I had several pieces of mail stolen right from my mailbox which included a couple of retirement checks from the State of California! FINALLY I HAD ENOUGH! Within a 60 day period, I sold my house and moved to the Philippines where I've lived full time since I arrived in July 2018 and I've never been back to the US let alone to Oakland! In the nearly 6 years since moving to the Philippines, I've never ever felt uncomfortable or frightened, and I've not experienced any crime to myself or to my property! Best decision I've ever made in my life moving from Oakland to the Philippines 🇵🇭 ❤ Oakland used to be a nice place to live and for many years I never had any problems until 2014 came along and it just kept getting worse and worse! I was lucky and blessed that I was able to move from there, but unfortunately I know there are many people living there that don't necessarily have the option or ability to leave! 😢😢

Maybe bcos I was a police officer that I'm flexible and adaptable bcos it takes a lot of adjustment to live here but at least for me, I've never been happier! I bought a new house, a new car and a new Suzuki GSX-S1000 since I've lived here, compared to the US I would never been able to buy a new house, especially in California where I was born and raised. Yes I'm one of a certain few that love living here in the Philippines especially I can live like a king here vs a near homeless senior in the US. Thank you for your kind words! Take care! Lived in Michigan near Detroit and in California (Alameda) across from Oakland and they both have the same issue corruption and bad urban planning. The corruption is obvious and it transcends political party; Rick Snyder/Kwame Kilpatrick and Gavin Newsom/Sheng Thao are good examples. But the urban planning is the real issue, both cities are examples of mass suburbanization instead of a high density urban city. Hundreds of miles of suburbs, are hard to police and lead to dead zones. Meaning there's no one in the city at night, and there's no one in the suburbs during the day. Versus a urban dense city, that has a mixture of residences and businesses, there's always someone there who can call the cops. Both issues combined create the perfect storm.

Downtown is grotesque now,a buboe of oakland bursting in the heart of a once beautiful city. That washington shopping center where safeway is is basically unsafe for normal people,im frightened for my elderly aunt to shop there. The old Portuguese are dying off and being replaced with people who dont see their homes as being a part of the community. The powerful real estate industry is responsible for much of the exodus from California. Housing in the U.S. used to be considered a 'soft' investment because society considered affordable housing important for a healthy economy & vibrant communities. When, in the 1980s, housing began to be considered as an investment to get rich quick, rents soared & soon thereafter, sales of ordinary soared beyond the reach of most workers. Rather than blame the victims, a spectator sport popular in this nation, it's far more accurate to blame the economic system which essentially destroyed affordable housing in order to create a small class of investor capitalists bent on squeezing the last drop of financial blood for their victims. So the problem with 'ruined' Oakland is the same as found anywhere else in this declining nation: an economic system designed to enrich the few at the expense of the many.
@Sovereign_Citizen_LEO6 ай бұрын
That is nonsense (much of it). Are you advocating for Cultural Marxism/ Socialism? It never used to be like this. Liberal/ Leftist corrupt brainwashed Politics/ Politicians created this destruction of our society and the middle class. Capitalism is far from perfect to be sure. But we haven't had Capitalism or anything resembling it for more than a century. The Democrats have made housing and everything else completely unaffordable. They are bankrupting the middle class and working class. The Globalist Bankers have engineered TWO (unprecedented) Global Depressions in barely a decade, -one of them a Plandemic where there was I believe, (after thousands of hours of extensive research), no Novel Coronavirus. Yet the Democrat Politicians (as always) fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

The law is way too lax. It’s not a deterrent. There are penalties for breaking the law to discourage people from doing it. If the penalties don’t do that, then they need to be increased until they do. It’s not cruel or unusual, it’s necessary. That might mean sending people to jail for years for “minor” crimes, but if that’s what it takes then that’s what it takes. You don’t see robberies in countries with extreme penalties like losing a hand for theft.

I worked for the past 30 years in Oakland, so I am able to speak with personal knowledge. I also worked in redevelopment, so I have worked in many of the neighborhoods. The real issue is the loser leadership and tolerance for BS. Just look at the streets, look at the graffiti, disregard for traffic laws, etc. Heck, call the police and they won't show up. Now, look a couple hundred yards across the channel to Alameda. Where's the graffiti, dirt on the streets, crime, and all the rest? You won't see people speeding, running lights or stop signs. Why is that? Alameda has law and order and Oakland does not. The people of Oakland should not re-elect any of their officials. Start over and clean things up. Demand performance out of the department heads. P.S. Walmart left Oakland when they adopted a $15/hour minimum wage. That was the real reason.

Honestly, as someone who has lived in Oakland for almost my entire working adult life - no, it's not "ruined" BUT the root of every other problem in the city is the affordability. Fix that and crime drops, businesses return because residents can afford to spend money and less issues with homelessness and addiction. The cost of living is the #1 problem and it has always been.

That is not so. Oakland was a wonderful city to grow up in. The elders in my family loved that city. It was a safe place to raise a family in. This was before the 1950’s. During the late 50’s crime was beginning to be a problem. By the 1960’s drug use was up and more gangs formed to service the addicted human refuse of the city. Businesses moved out and the workers moved with them. On and on it has been spinning out of control until you have today’s cesspool.

He was dropping me off during lunch time at the Amtrak train station, and when we arrived, right there in the parking lot there was a car engulfed in flames. About ten minutes later the car exploded. No one even came for a good forty five minutes. The train attendant later said it was probably a stolen car and that the criminals sometimes light them on fire. Also, during that trip, was pretty much bull-charged, out of the blue, by a psychotic homeless person for absolutely no reason. Again, broad daylight.

When I left Oakland in 1999 the city population was nearly evenly split between whites, blacks, Latiné, and Asians . There was also an urban Indian population too. It is too simplistic to say that the city declined just because a certain demographic moved in to take advantage of jobs during WW2. There were also issues with deindustrialization and loss of blue collar jobs among other issues in the 60s and 70s. Crack hit hard in the 80s.

@@brianclark4040 WTF are you people lying about? Oakland and Greater San Fransisco was built by ethnic Whites, from Spanish settlers to English merchantmen to Russian traders, etc. There were NO blacks, well into the 20th century! To any degree that there were any non-white minorities, they were Asian and Latino, and they never made up more than 5% until AFTER WW2 when Oakland had already been built into a great city. The historic Bridge system connecting San Fransisco with Oakland? Not a SINGLE I-beam, nor Excavation, nor Concrete Embedment, NOTHING was built by Black men, nor Asian, nor Latino. ALL of the creators were White. Built as the crowning achievement of a 1920s and 30s Oakland which was 97% White. Then 95% White in the 1940s (largely with so many White MEN Being sent to War, while their replacements staying safely in America were disproportionately non-White). Then 90% in the 1950s - not quite catastrophic yet, but crime and danger signals rising. Then the explosion of Black crime in the 60s and 70s, and the driving out of the White populace, collapsing to 60%! Black migration - and non-White takeover, coincides ONLY with Oakland's DOWNFALL from that height. Once among the top-ten cities to live in the World in the mid-20th century, it is now Majority Today, Whites are actually less than 30% of Oakland (And No, Arabs and Mexicans don't count as "White", even if the government claims it) Have fun trying to rewrite history - IT WON'T WORK.
