FX3 - just recently purchased. A lot to learn, but love the compact body. Thanks for sharing!
@bluestilling101 Жыл бұрын
Good morning Chadwin. The FX3 was my dream-come-true camera for cinematic video. After the firmware upgrade, it has everything I need. My business parter went with the FX6, and he states that he is a little envious of the FX3, so that tells me a lot. I think that once you read how I rigged it out, that might answer a lot of the "why" as well. You asked what others may have done differently, so here goes. I did do something different. I want to take advantage of my audio handle on my FX3, so I went with the Tilta TA-MAA Mini Articulating Arm. It gives me just a bit more room to be creative with how high and different angles I can mount the monitor from the nato rail on top of the handle. I also installed the Tilta Nucleus M focus/Zoom system and mounted the handles using rosette mounts on a Tilta full-cage kit, which gave me the option to remove the top-center piece and mount the audio handle. I chose the Tilta cage because in my opinion, Tilta did an excellent job of articulating its cage with the builtin mounts already incorporated on the body of the FX3 (keeping in mind, that I want to build a system around my camera body, and not vice-versa). The nucleus-M left and right handles allows me to utilize the zoom and focus knobs, using only my left and right index fingers when hand held, or utilize the included hardware to mount them to a shoulder rig set-up. I also have the option to use the handles while using the rig on a tripod mount, or the option of using the FIZ when tripod mounted (or have someone else control the focus and zoom from a director monitor or over the shoulder. My motors are both mounted right-side 10 inch rod. The system is fantastic. I have the Nitze monitor cage on the Atomos Ninja 5+.The whole system is powered with a 160 WH V-mount external battery attached to the SmallRig V-mount battery plate, which allows me to supply power to my Sony via a USB-C line, (while still having the Sony battery installed as a backup to run the camera, should the external batter fails), d-Tap to the monitor, d-tap to the Nucleus-M system and still have a USB-A plug available. I have the Small Rig Matte Box on the front. Not at all the matte box I ordered, but it will do. I watched your video a few times before deciding what I wanted on my rig. Thank you for your input. I did a. lot of research before building my first Frankenstein Rig, but it was well worth the effort, because I love the results.

Thanks, I just ordered a FX3 and I'm looking for ideas on how to best rig. Currently, as primarily a photographer, I already have a good selection of all Sony e-mount glass - so with the focus breathing update (v3.0) that's already covered most of my likely lens needs with AF. Manual focusing is likely less good on Sony as most lenses have short focus throws. I need to explore pulling manual focus - as an option for racking between two points, but feel that to start I will be more reliant on AF. In terms of V-mount batteries I wondered what your view was on SmallRig's latest offerings? Compact but pretty expensive? Might be good though. I agree I wouldn't want to risk 'bricking' an expensive body by getting a power surge from a dummy battery plugged into (incorrectly) a V-mount. I need to explore PolarPro's matte box too. Previously I had thought about using the SmallRig pro version with a Polar Pro (PM) variable ND in 82mm. Maybe drop in fixed NDs are good too, but slow to use in a fast moving outdoor scenario. If using controlled lighting indoors then probably OK- more tricky outdoors in real variable lighting (eg moving clouds, requiring frequent exposure changes).

Thanks for watching! Depends on the jib of course and the weight it holds, but you could just put the whole camera on with v-mount and all. @chadwin3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, you can really do it either way. I’ve powered the a7siii and FX3 with a dummy battery to d-tap and dummy battery directly plugged into the wall, both without any issues. The only thing is, without the hole for the cable to come out, you have to leave the battery door open or remove it completely. USBC works great, you just need a power bank or v Mount battery with USBC PD.

😂 😆 yeah! That’s the thing with the Fx3, if you add anything on top of the handle, it starts to get awkwardly tall!

@@chadwin oh I know! I’ve got one. I think the FX6 is my next purchase. I think it ends up being smaller lol.

@@AaronStoneVLOGS haha we’re in the same boat then! I’ve been trying to get the FX6 but it’s literally been on back order all year, like so many other things this year. Chip shortages are the worse!
@AaronStoneVLOGS3 жыл бұрын
@@chadwin yes it’s insane. I’ve got a local Sony dealer combing the earth. I think i read that the sony plant the FX6 is manufactured in burned down or had an explosion just before the chip shortage. It may be a WHILE.

@@AaronStoneVLOGS that’s insane! If it actually burned down…..makes a lot of sense why the back order is so bad.

To me the mic holder with its tiny screws seems weak. Should we be concerned? Seems it was designed for a lighter weight mic.
@chadwin3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely not a very robust mount, but it seems to be holding up fine so far. It's the same design on the Sony FS5 and other larger cams from them.

8:50 You can actually remove that door quite easily with no tools required.

yeah, I know you can remove the battery door, but every time I try, I feel like I'm forcing it too much even though I've pulled the spring loaded pin back. I just don't wanna break it!

Glad I found your channel! Subbed! Question for the basecamp vnd - Which nd do you use the most for run n gun situations, the 2-5 or 6-9?
@chadwin3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I usually find that the 2-5 stop VND is enough for my needs. Every once and a while if it's really sunny, I'll use the 6-9 stop.

I love your passion my dude but on a 24mm lens that mic is gonna be very visible, you're gonna have to pull that monitor back a bit. Everyone of these videos done by people who know their gear just confirms for me that I'll never have a comfy, balanced run + gun documentary rig for my a7s3/FX3 that includes a shotgun mic into an XLR adapter + a nice monitor. I have accepted my fate.

Turning a Sony fx3 cinema camera into a real cinema camera
@chadwin3 жыл бұрын
haha 😂 yep!
@frankfeng27013 жыл бұрын
I really think FX3 missed out on so many important cinema features - true 24p, shutter angle, waveform, anamorphic mode, DCI 4K, time code - not to mention internal ND, hybrid articulating screen, removable EVF, dual bottom 1/4 screw, better LCD - that it only makes us wonder why Sony not only placed it in the FX line but also priced/spec'ed/released it so similarly/closely with A7S3. And the major addition being the XLR handle is actually not as versatile or functional as your own handle plus a separate XLR-K3M unit.
@chadwin3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, there are a lot of "cinema camera" features that are still missing, many of which you mentioned. However, I will say I would still choose it over the a7siii because you get the XLR inputs and red tally lights to let you know you're filming and it has a build in fan, so you never have to worry about overheating. It's a great B-cam or gimbal cam too if you're gonna match it to the FX6 or FX9.
