If you accidently trap the condensate on a mini-split system the water will run down the wall the indoor unit is mounted to. I've seen this many many times when someone runs a vinyl tube and puts the hangers to far apart on a pitched horizontal run. Better of using pvc for any horizontal runs

I know this is an old video, but thanks for the clear explanation. I installed a mini split this week and I was wondering about this.

@5:10 I’ve had a few calls where the indoor unit is leaking water and found the drain pigtailed outside. Just straightened it and the whole drain line and pan cleared right out. It’s important to remember when installing a mini-split that the drain has a downward slope and not travelling uphill. It gets overlooked more than you’d think.

If only inspectors in S. Florida agreed. They require a trap mostly for an insect/pest barrier. I had one in Coral Springs that wanted a check valve and a trap on each line to pass inspection. Of course we removed the check valve after passing the mechanical final.

Positive pressure - no ptrap. Negative pressure such as air handlers - ptrap Any water draining into a drain that could emit a bad smell - ptrap

I remember this in technical school. I hope Craig makes a video with some examples of the different types of pressures and system designs. Thanks for mentioning this..
@jessestewart3835
@jessestewart3835 2 жыл бұрын
@@stan-r a positive pressure system is where a blower PUSHES air past a coil and drain pan. A negative pressure system is when a blower is SUCKING air past a coil and drain pan. If a negative pressure system does not have a ptrap, it will also suck air up from the drain (like a vacuum) making water unable to go down drain.. In this case, water will build up and overflow over the drain pan until blower is de-energized and then all the water will then rush down the drain since the vacuum is now gone. In this case a P trap is required so the water in the Ptrap stops the blower from sucking air up from the drain. Hope this helped

@@stan-r you’re welcome. Also keep in mind that you can only have one ptrap. Double ptraps will also cause water to not drain.

Also very important to size the trap correctly in line with the static pressure the unit is creating. A lot of larger AHUs suck the water seal clean out as the heights are not sufficient, sometimes the drop to the trap is too short other times the water seal hight is too short. Also good practice on longer drain lines to add a vent after the trap to eliminate any airlocks that can occur

@ Ja Kurt. My immediate reaction may be quite unscientific but if the equipment manufacturer does not advise to install something additional, do not. In fact the equipment manual warns the user that modifications will void the warranty.

What if someone has their air handler in an attic and they are using the secondary condensate drain line as well ( that would never be used unless the main line is plugged), water would dry up in there relatively fast ?

Question….. On my mini-split heat pump, there is a vertical condensate pvc pipe that runs directly outside. My concern is preventing spiders and other crawling bugs from making their way into the house through the pipe. Any idea how to prevent it? Thank you.

thank you for the great video. quick question, how about a mini split ducted unit? does that need a trap?
@1KsE1

It depends, if the drain outlet is on the positive side of the unit then no. But if it is on the negative side then yes

Is the condensate from a mini split acidic? or can it just drain onto the ground? (and eventually evaporate)
@mrofnocnon
@mrofnocnon 2 жыл бұрын
A confusing example as usually the blower is upstream of the coil not downstream with a furnace so the pressure at condensate drain is positive.

What about a slim ducted mini split system like the Fujitsu ARU18RGLX? This is not the wall mounted units. The installation instructions state it is prohibited to add a trap, rise or air bleeding when naturally (gravity) drained.

At the end of the ductless condensate line, flex tube I would do a N bend trap so bugs dont go into drain line. This would be any run over 6 foot, I have never had a problem

Is it true that if the blower motor is below the condensate pan it creates a positive pressure condition making a trap on condensate line unnecessary?

I would think the air flow over the small drain opening would create a suction.

Forget the location of the blower what is important is the location of the coil relative to the blower. If the coil is downstream the blower you have a blow through configuration and the drain pan will have positive pressure. You should still trap keep air leaks to minimum.

My God what dumb dumb would ask if a mini split needs a P trap? The only time you need a P trap is when the drain system is in the negative pressure section of the cabinet.
