Here’s a tip: If you have an iPhone 13 or newer then there’s a camera option called “cinematic mode” that adds background blur (bokeh) to live video and emulates the quality of a real camera very well without having to spend loads of money solely for self tapes. I believe this is on most new android phones as well

Wow, this is just what I've been looking for! You mentioned everything that Ive been wanting and needing in a camera. I've been using my iPad to tape auditions, and while it has served it's purpose, I know I need a real camera for better quality videos and I don't like using my phone. I NEED a flip out screen so I can see what I am doing and I need to be able to zoom in to film and zoom out for full body. I don't have anyone to assist me. Having a dedicated camera set up and ready to film would save me a lot of time. THANK YOU!!!

After seeing this post I did more research before purchasing this camera. Like for years I have been successful using my iPhones, but now wanted a dedicated camera to record auditions. I have started using more remote readers as well. I must say you should have mentioned the learning curve needed to achieve the best settings. I found the Sony app was not reliable, so I purchased a remote. (Not the Sony remote.) It is more convenient for whom ever is running the camera does not have to touch the camera. I always like to check audio levels and white balance and using presets on this camera makes that process more efficient. Thank you Curt I am now signing the praise of this little camera.

Your Sony ZV1's Aperature, ISO, White balance and shutter speed and any other important settings. I bought Sony ZV1 and Deity D3 Pro because I want the best quality for my auditions and I want to be a successful actor just like you. I read lots of comments and many people are curious like me on your settings for your ZV1camera and your audio. Deity D3 pro has Gain knob 1 thru 10. Which do you use and your audio setting on ZV1. Deity also has high pass filter, 75Hz, 150Hz and off function. Which do you use? Many people want to know. Thank you so much for all you do.

Thank you Kurt! My question is, do you have a video on the editing software you use? I've been using my (dinosaur old) Samsung 8+ for self tape with an app called youcut. I'm ready to learn how to utilize an existing Canon g12 camera I own for self tapes now thanks to your video explaining to me the benefits of using an actual camera and leaving the set up in place etc. I'm not an apple or mac user and most people have told me they just use iMovie, which hasn't been helpful for me since I have a Droid and use windows laptop. Personally I love how your Sony camera is compact and has the extra bells features of eye detection etc so I will keep it in mine when budget allows for me to upgrade, I suspect my Canon g12 will be suitable for now, I'm ready to now learn what editing tool to/you use and if there are any video tutorials on it that you have created. I don't have a video about them but here are two editing tools you can check out 1. Davinci Resolve: This software is free and very powerful. Professional editors use a paid version of this. The free version is more than enough for editing self tapes. 2. Movavi Video Editor: This one costs about $75 but it is the easiest to learn in my opinion. Probably the most similar to iMovie.

Ya need a memory card reader. Quickest and most efficient way! They are quite cheap or maybe your Mac has one built in. 🙌🏻

I just watched the video and saw the dozens of comments saying that there is an internal mic issue - sometimes not being able to get audio after you've unplugged and external mic unless you totally turn the camera off and turn it back on again. Have you had any issues with the internal mic?

I've never used the ZV-e10 but it looks like a good camera. I never shoot auditions in 4K. Always 1080p because the file sizes are smaller. Nobody has ever complained that my self tapes are not high enough quality.

It’s easer than a camera (you can select the best tape, compress it and send it immediately, but the quality it’s bad. I have a question. In regards to self submitting and choosing a headshot for a character that I want to audition for. Lets say they invite you to audition for the role. What I keep getting stuck on is when I receive an audition how do I choose the outfit for the audition. Like for example I just turned in an audition for an indian female named sarah. My headshot was ethnic wearing an ethnic gown and since I had nothing else to wear for the audition I ended up wearing the same long gown that I was wearing in my headshot. This has to be the top 1 of 2 factors that I keep getting stuck on when it comes to auditions. Please help

I'm making my own short film. I wrote the entire thing on my own and I'm playing all the characters and I'm almost finished with it. I'm just taking a break from it. I'm filming it in my bedroom, and I'm using my tablet the quality is not the greatest but I'm doing it just for fun so it doesn't really have to be movie theater quality. I've been filming it one scene at a time, and doing 2 scenes per day depending on how long the scene is. I'm very proud of it so far. It's called Uninvited. It's about a mean girl (Amanda, but I pronounce it Amonda to make the name sound cool) who throws a party and doesn't invite the new girl (Taylor) because of the outfits she wears. Amanda and her two friends Jenny and Penny pick on Taylor at school but Amanda is the meanest to Taylor. Eventually Amanda’s mother Barbara makes Amanda invite Taylor to the party and then something happens at the party but there's a nice ending.
