I suffer from anxiety.....and I am currently following mindfulness as a treatment for anxiety...yes it is hard at first, there is alot to learn, in changing your way of thinking... but the rewards are well worth it....my anxiety has lessened, and. I am not taking any medications.....one of my homework projects was to listen to Mr. Kabat speech.....I continue to stay in the present, feel what I am experienceing, and letting go.....my mind is less focused on myself and find my safe zone. once I am back in the present I move on the reaction to exhibit or not.. in situations which I may find difficult to control my emotions.....three steps.... STOP, BREATH, THINK. remain in the present clear the mind....let go of the baggage.

Interesting ... you can’t be conservative and mindful? Judging groups fits into the mindfulness-ness? Is the process of influencing groups fit into being mindful? I’m not judging or criticizing ... just asking.
@bobgoodnoe4583
@bobgoodnoe4583 5 жыл бұрын
Keara McCardle - I see ... but it seems like ... to be truly mindful, there would be no reason the differentiate? To do so, (it seems to me at least) would be strictly the ego in action. Kind of like a mindfulness with an agenda. It doesn’t feel right to me. But, I admit, it’s an uneducated opinion on my part.
@bobgoodnoe4583
@bobgoodnoe4583 5 жыл бұрын
Keara McCardle - Probably ... in most cases direct questions would not be asked with regard to political alignments, (at least I would hope not). What’s interesting is this video suggests an alignment of a particular group which, to me, suggests a self calmed stance on higher moral ground. And this doesn’t seem to fit into true mindfulness or being mindful. In the video there’s an underlying cry for ego support using a facade labeled mindfulness - which I find fascinating. But, here again ... I have no credentials to support my claim. Your comments are appreciated. Stay well.

@@bobgoodnoe4583 I think when you are being truly mindful (such as when you are meditating), you are neither a conservative or a liberal. You're just being. 'Conservative' and 'liberal' are judgemental positions, and mindfulness is non-judgemental awareness. Which isn't isn't to say that people who practice mindfulness are non-judgemental, because it's natural for us to be judgemental in our day to day lives. And we live in democracies where we are obliged to vote, so it's ok to have a political position. I think it's important to remember that we are human beings first and foremost, and conservatives/liberal a very distant second. You are not your political position, you are just you. When I'm meditating and I have a thought related to politics, I don't follow that thought by being judgemental, I just let it go. Because all too often those thoughts will cause me negative emotions, and that's what I'm trying to reduce by being mindful. Hope that helps.

Thank you! Compassion for ourselves and compassion for others, including the science haters and racists adopting the full-throttle insanity of Trumpism. When Stephen Hawking said Trump appeals to the lowest common denominator, I think he was referring to the fact that his supporters are voting based on fear. This is how and why they vote their fears into office. Trump votersThey are not deplorables. They are people whose lives have been devastated by neoliberalism and don't know there are other options.

Wow, his talks are always geared to people who have never even heard of meditation and he always expresses noticing that the room is full of meditators -- and yet he never bothers to up his game to met his audiences. He has done some great work; he's truly a pioneer and a brilliant man. However, I don't find it inspiring to see him and many of his peer group running all over the planet taking bows for what they created in the 1970's. Just the fact that they take so many bows is rather antithetical to the message. he can't even hold his own train of thought . . .rambling, making little jokes when he gets lost . . .asking the audience what he was just talking about. Disappointing. Full Catastrophe Living is a great great book, by the way. Everyone should read it. And who knows what Action for Happiness is -- clearly he didn't bother to learn anything about it to even incorporate into his talk. Lazy. Self-important. Rambling.

Is he a fake? I have his were ever you go book but im kind of afraid to read it all because i dont want any mixed messages. I want to experience and understand what he means by meditation because a lot of people have different perceptions of it. "Experience itself is the essence of meditation." See i just made that up, anyone can get flakey with it.
@garypuckettmuse

No, he's not a flake. As for meditation instruction it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for western non-Buddhist "meditation" his talks on mindfulness meditation are very good. Consider what his goals are for mindfulness meditation and see if they suit your own. It's mostly about relaxation, mind-body awareness, calming the mind, getting in touch with the present moment. These are not "high spiritual goals"; they are pretty mundane however once accomplished they do necessarily open doors to more spiritual pursuits as well as helping in everyday life tremendously. He's legit. His book Full Catastrophe Living is amazing. He will not steer you wrong. However if you are looking for a more progressive, spiritual path to follow his teachings are only a first baby step. The most dedicated Buddhists who are on paths they hope will lead to enlightenment use following the breath and some of the other "sense" meditations in the beginning. This is pretty standard. Do not worry about Kabat-Zinn, he's a good man.I would use his old material myself. Hope this helps.

Dope thanks for the input ill give him a read, im not scared of him its more like being scared of getting confused on what he's talking about. Someone i am scared of a bit but in a good way is carl jung, jordan peterson can give u a good introduction as to what he's all about on youtube, i think u might enjoy if u haven't heard of them when it comes to this enlightenment shit he's explaining the idea that everyones consciousness has a shadow and that the shadow can not be defeated but by working with it makes you grow more spiritually. Im still trying to put it all together on all this but i somewhat understand, carl proves that fully enlighten beings are a myth but evolving your consciousness is whats up and evolution never just stops 😄

Malachai -- I love Carl Jung. Here are two other interesting characters for you: J. Krishnamurti (this is some serious stuff on real enlightenment and his backstory is amazing) and Alan Watts -- also an interesting backstory -- and I do consider him some sort of errant saint/crazy genius/enlightened being and also a terrifically entertaining speaker.His work is from the 60's and it is as fresh as if he spoke it today and he is smart like people are no longer smart. Both men are well represented on youtube as well as having written brilliant books. (I know you are not "afraid" of Kabat Zinn that would be like being afraid of Santa Claus). Cheers!

I have recently found your work Jon as part of my mindfulness journey and found it extremely helpful and inspiring. One of my favorite quotes is " In the beginners mind there are many possibilities, but in the experts mind there are few". Sadly your political statement at the beginning of this talk exhibits classic "expert" mind. It was unnecessary and divisive. You have diminished and dismissed the needs wants and views of more than half the population of the USA. I hope you have had the opportunity to rethink this especially in light of our experiences in 2021. As you should know the Buddha refused to opine on anything that would be considered political or ideological. Perhaps you should go back and review his works for guidance.

I still admire him and recognize the inherent frailty that comes with simply being human and imperfect. While Trump has many, many flaws I reject the notion he is of the radical right and an existential danger to life and liberty. On the other hand I find the direction the other political extreme is pulling us truly dangerous. And yes, I'm speaking of political correctness, identity politics and social justice and the fact this philosophy seems to have captured the left in Western societies. If anyone is interested Jordan B. Peterson has some very powerful insights into and indictments of the radical left as constituted today. His KZbin channel is worthy of exploration. To me his most powerful message is not to ascribe pure evil or pure good to one group or another, but that both good and evil runs straight through the heart and soul of each one of us, and the best way we can contribute to betterment is to clean up our own house, metaphorically speaking. If we all did that, and I believe mindfulness is a great tool to that end, that would go a long way to mitigating the possibility of great evil manifesting itself in murderous movements inflicting untold and unnecessary suffering upon humanity. Neither side has a lock on virtue, humility and appreciation or evil, arrogance and resentment. All of these qualities reside in each and every one of us and recognizing and admitting this is half the battle.

It makes me very sad that he would bring politics into mindfulness. Politics are specifically about judging issues as good or bad. Mindfulness is about approaching things without judgment, and in my opinion, one of the strongest antidotes to the poisons that divide us. We are all human regardless of political view. In fact, he even says that "this area is for deep listening vs argument", but prior to that he very much indulged his disagreement and made a blanket statement that the political change in America was probably (and rightfully) seen by most people as bad. This is the opposite of mindfulness and openness. This is divisive.
