I’m behind watching your videos AK but I was super excited to watch this one. I lived in alphabet city around 1970-1973 however the bldg I lived in wasn’t shown. I wondered why. I googled it and found that is Is now the garden you passed @21:20. Also, I didn’t see if you stopped at Katz’ Deli. If it’s still there. It was there for decades. They had AWESOME sandwiches!!

Have you ever watched Nelson Sullivan on youtube? He was vlogging in Alphabet City and other parts of NYC in the 80's! He passed away in 1989 but has hundreds of hours of 80's NYC uploaded. I just recorded a video in Alphabet City last week :) You inspired me to walk. I parked by Thompkins Square Park and walked to Washington Square Park and back!

I lived at 30 Avenue B with my parents from 1943-1953. It had a kitchen and a bedroom and bath and the rent was $25.00 a month. I remember that large church on 3rd Street between Avenue B and A that used to scare the hell out of me because of its size. I used to roller skate at Thompkins Square Park, and I had the bruised knees to show it. What great memories. Moved away to the Bronx in 1953 and lived there for 20 years. Now on Long Island for 48 years and staying. Thanks for going down my old block.
@emintey3 жыл бұрын
That's Most Holy Redeemer Church. I was born in 1951 and grew up in the projects, I went to St. Brigid's Church and school on Ave. B. I moved out of New York about 40 years ago and have hardly been back, but memories still remain.
@madelinepearl74733 жыл бұрын
@@emintey It was great taking a tour of the old neighborhood. Only a few things look the same like the building I lived in. There used to be a movie house on Avenue B..Loews Avenue B. I think it was between 5th and 6th Street. I went to PS 15 on 4th Street between Avenue C and D. The school is still there but they changed the name to Roberto Climenti Public School. You are right about the memories.
@emintey3 жыл бұрын
@@madelinepearl7473 Madeline, you were young when you left the neighborhood and I'm sure there was no Loews theatre on Ave B. There was the Loew's Commodore on 1st Ave between 6th and 7th St. which later became the Fillmore East. There was also the Loew's Delancey on Delancey St. There were a lot of small independent movie houses in the neighborhood, on E. 3rd St. was the American between Ave C and B, and on Clinton St. Just south of Houston was the Palestine (later the Winston) and several others. My mother would give the kids a quarter and another quarter for candy to get us out of her hair when there was no school...this was before the crime rate was a concern. I lived in the neighborhood until I was in my early 20's.
@madelinepearl74733 жыл бұрын
@@emintey OK...some info for you. The Loews Avenue B was built in 1913. It was at the intersection of Avenue B and 5th Street. It closed in 1958 and was demolished in 1968. I remember that movie house well because my mother made me go to that movie house alone to see the movie King Kong..my first movie by myself. I also remember the movie house between B and C . They charged 30 cents a ticket for adults and 20 cents for kids(LOL). Just do a google search on the Loews Avenue B..

When I watch your videos, sometimes I remember a song by a salsa music singer from The Bronx named Hector Lavoe that says: "The street is a jungle of cement and wild beasts, of course. There's no one who goes crazy with happiness anymore. Wherever the worst awaits you". I traslated the lyrics the best I could.

As late as the early 90's, Alphabet City was a dreadful place. Why? There was nothing to "anchor it" - no major hotels, hospitals, museums, commercial places, or even a subway stop. There was NO reason to go there unless you lived there. The streets were poorly lit at night and many of the buildings were abandoned.
