The San Francisco Cable Car is an iconic symbol of the city's transportation system and a beloved attraction for visitors. These historic cable cars have been in operation since the late 19th century and offer a unique and nostalgic way to explore the hilly streets of San Francisco.
The cable car system operates using an underground cable that runs beneath the street. The cable is continuously moving and is powered by a central powerhouse. The gripman, located inside the car, controls the movement of the car by manually grasping and releasing the moving cable with a mechanical grip device.
San Francisco's cable car network consists of three lines: the Powell-Hyde Line, the Powell-Mason Line, and the California Street Line. Each line has its own distinctive route, traversing different neighborhoods and landmarks. The lines offer scenic views of the city's iconic sights, including Lombard Street, Coit Tower, and Fisherman's Wharf.
Riding a San Francisco Cable Car is an experience in itself. Passengers can choose to either stand on the running boards outside the car or sit inside on the wooden seats. As the cable car climbs up steep hills and navigates sharp turns, riders can enjoy breathtaking views of the city's skyline and the San Francisco Bay.

The cable cars also take a fare card called Clipper. Similar to the Easy and OMNY cards from Miami and NYC respectively.

It is not electric. The only things electric is the battery beneath the cable car for the headlights and marker lights on the roof and the interior lights.

I just recently (today) watched your video of the NY subway from Chinatown to Queens....and here we are...enjoying something I've actually experienced. I visited SF in early Summer 2012 with my then girlfriend......kinda fell in love with the city, a little bit....got a feel for what Tony Bennett was singing about....very charming city! But I was absolutely fascinated by the cable cars.....fantastic example of late 19th century engineering and ingenuity!

Well, actually (🤓), cable cars were invented in San Francisco and spread all over the world from there. So these actually have been continuously running in SF since 1869. (With short pauses for the larger earthquakes.) These vehicles range in age from late 19th century cars to some that were actually built brand new by Muni themselves due to increasing demand. So this one is relatively "new" compared to some of the really old ones that you can catch. That being said, the really really old ones from the 19th century are usually in the Cable Car museum and they only bring them out on the routes for special events.

Of course it is noisy! After all it is pulled by a cable that has hooks to catch the pins on the cable gear and there are iron wheels underneat the streets every 200 yards to the end of the line. There are 3 cable car lines. Mason, Hyde, that share tracks on Powell Street and the California Street line.

8/2024....Excellent video. I visited SF in June of 1988, with my girlfriend, (now wife), we were both 35, and Artists. We met in graduate school, my art career was in full swing in 88, I was creating Art furniture, and exhibiting them. She went from creating sculptures that resembled cakes, to making real (edible) cakes that were sculptures. Friends of ours would commission her to build 3-D, layered cakes, frosted to resemble real objects. We live in Columbus, Ohio. We took the cable cars often, they were fascinating machines from yesteryear, the "grip" operators were often colorful characters. Everyone was so friendly, and we are always surrounded by cheerful tourists, like ourselves. We sat and stood at times. We also did a lot of walking. We walked most of the length of the Golden Gate Bridge and back. We both loved eating unique pastries and sipping cappuccino in cozy outdoor cafes.

A bit of personal history on the SF cable cars. In 1962 I was 12. My family traveled from NJ to CA to visit our relatives. We went on the California Zephyr were you flushed the toilet right out on to the tracks. We got to ride the Powell cable car. Back then when it came time to turn the car around; it was done by the passengers, but men only. I remember my parents taking a picture of me helping. I love your style, no dumb comments or music that not everyone will like. Also watching 'New Yorker Rides the San Francisco Cable Car | Powell-Mason Line' I noticed that at 15:30 there are only three tracks; the trolley shares the middle track. You said nothing abut it. Did you miss it? As a rail fan I've never seen that before.

Lol, I can't believe that you lot are still trying to push this propaganda. SF is back to about 80% of pre-pandemic tourist visits. It was at 50% last year, and at 30% in 2021. They are projecting that they will exceed 2019 levels by next year. Interestingly, in dollar terms somehow the tourist spend is already more than in 2019. I guess the inflation during the pandemic increased the prices. I urge you to keep in mind that showing the one trashy neighborhood in SF on repeat on Fox News does not in any way impact the fact that SF is still one of the cleanest and safest US cities. The crime numbers don't lie. Even after SF recent "spike" in crime, it's still twice safer than for example Florida.
