I’m trying to talk to this girl I like, and growing up with parents who communicated poorly has basically set me up to fail in that area, especially with barriers to active listening, you have given me hope and knowledge for a path through that I want to improve upon so I can grow my relationships with people.

Thanks for sharing. Communication is a skill like any other skill. You can work on it and it will improve. Even if you didn't grow up in a communicative home, you can improve with effort, time, and some basic instructions (like videos or books). I wish you the best on your journey. You can do it!

Alex, I am not an English native speaker but your videos are very useful for me to improve my communication skills. I send you a big thank you!

I learned not to be a passive listener. Listening with the intention to understand is hard transition. Thank you for all your help!

I was brought up with a mother who had a few montras: 1) it's my way or the high way. 2) children should be seen and not heard. Add a stepfather that didn't talk or show any emotions other then anger and discipline. To say I have issues as an adult is an understatement.

Thank you! I think it's hard to help listening flow to survive in boring and long speeches such as manuscript-oriented lecturers, however, it could be helpful to help active listening by taking notes, finding interesting relationships between our prior knowledge with the topic and even drawing related diagrams and figures!

Agreed! I have a video next week that says exactly that!

Howdy Alex. I came to this video looking for tips to help me in my job. I do call analytics and have trouble listening fully to our recorded calls. Any tips or suggestions on how to apply active listening in situations like this?
@alexanderlyon8 күн бұрын
No, I don't have any tips for listening to recorded content. These videos (and my channel) deal almost entirely with face-to-face communication. I wouldn't know where to start on tips for staying engaged while listening to recordings. It's out of my area.

Just asking, hope you'll answer, but how do you know if you're asking a good question?
@alexanderlyon3 ай бұрын
I have a whole video on that called _How to Ask Better Questions in Conversations_ . If you search for my name and that title, it should pop in the search results.

I have a regular client who actually gets upset and sometimes yells "I am talking!" when I "interrupt" her by asking a clarifying question or when I make a quick comment that emphasizes what she is saying. When she is speaking I have to quell my natural tendency to engage and just listen without saying anything or even making too many facial movements because it "distracts" her. Then when its my turn to talk, she makes no indication that she is hearing me, until after I stop talking. Often her response to what I say sounds like she didn't really get what I was saying. If I interrupt to say that wasn't what I meant, she starts yelling at me and demanding she gets to talk! LOL I find this very frustrating. Its like we are news anchors sitting there taking turns making making statements without really engaging in a conversation.

That sounds challenging!

@@alexanderlyon For sure! Lol I am learning to adapt to her style for now. Maybe some day I will be able to have a conversation with her about it.

What if you don't know what to ask because your Anxious and just thinking I have anxiety listening which means sometimes I'm not relaxed and tend to think what to say or am I listening right

Instead of thinking of what to say, get curious about what the person is saying and think of a follow up question.

Not related to this video. But I loved your reaction to Bill Gates. Id love to see your reaction to Kamala Harris interviews and Donald Trump interviews. Kamala's interviews reflect a lot on your Bill Gates reaction. 😂 Be a blast to watch!

Thank you. I appreciate the compliment. I don't do political videos. I'm not interested in politics and, even though it would likely gets lots of views, politics isn't what people come to this channel for.
