I just ordered this mod for my Ltd ec1000 deluxe. Im excited after watching this. You can tell an immediate difference. More responsive, and a way fatter tone. I was considering putting some good passives in that guitar. I'm just not crazy about actives, but I played a guitar with an 18v mod and it was so much better. This is a nice fix for flat sounding actives.

With the mod the EMG's sound more like a super hot pair of passive pickups. I like the 24 volt sound much better. Great guitar by the way. :)

IDK man I just put this in and I really think they make a difference. The highs sound better and shit just sounds clearer/less muddy when playing chords. Also it seems to help the "topping off" EMGS have when trying to pick harder and it seems you can't get any more attack or whatever you want to call it. Definitely helped the feel. I bought this because I just got a set of Fishman Fluence and they are definitely superior to the EMG's at 9Volts....this definitely made me like my EMG's a little better when I play the Fishman guitar then pick up the EMG equipped guitars. I've had multiple people in the past tell me they sound better running at at least 18 volts. I think this product is the real deal

***** I don't seem to have them on my listed of tested pickups, I do have other people who have tested pickups not on my list. Let me double check. In theory since they are very similar to other lessor known brands they should work as most all active pickups are rated for at least 18v while most follow the lines of emg and are rated up to 27 volts. let me check with a few of my testers and see if they have this brand on their list. if not I will get myself a set and test them personally.

***** I checked with one of my testers out in California and he has tested this with 2 different models of red-actives, but he doesn't recall which models as he is away from his home on vacation. However on a side note, those pickups are produced by the same company that makes some "other" known discount active pickups. My contact within that company tells me that the specs and voltage rating is 27 volts on all the pickups they produce for the different brands. So the 24 volt mod should work great.

Have the EMG 81/85 in an ESP/LTD H1001FM. It's one of those things that I would have to hear for myself. I hear the difference, but we all use different gear. So it's really hard to tell if the difference is better...sounds good though.

Bought a 10 pack of dual A23 battery holders $9.95 eBay.. 10 hard case end 9v clips. $3.99 Amazon..and a 6 pack of batteries Amazon $3.99.... Some solder and hot glue.....i have 3 emg guitars.... So for less than 20 bucks.. I did all 3...plus enough to make 7 more. On eBay you can find people selling home mades for $10 bucks shipped. Ive ran dual batteries 18v before..mad like 10% diff...but 24 seems 80% better

Watching the video, the 9V and 24V sound exactly the same. However, the difference is not supposed to be sound, but responsiveness; and since we're not the one playing that guitar and feeling/hearing how it responds, the video doesn't really tell us much. But near the end of the video, he shows both the 9V and 24V waveforms, and there is definitely something different going on.

I've just tried it on my guitars. The result is less compression, more dynamics, a little rolled off highest frequencies, a little more bass, a little less attack due to increased dynamics and reduced compression. I also notice a small difference in guitar feel, it's less forgiving due to incresed dynamics and reduced compression, which imo is positive. Personally i think it's worth trying it, none of the two is a clear winner, it's a matter of taste / feel. If you prefer more compression, less dynamics and constant ice pick attack stay in 9v, if not go for 24v.

I wonder if anyone knows is it possible without resistor mods to run EMG MM-04 pre-amp booster with 12 volt battery instead of 9 volts? This type of cylindrical battery would suit better to my build instead of block 9 volt battery form factor. Asked this from EMG but haven't had any reply yet.

27 volts is the MAXIMUM the pickup can handle, not the minimum! Somebody could seriously screw up their pickups by watching this video.

Some of these people dont quite understand what this works for.. a lot of signal/ frequency we can't appreciate until it is at very loud sound levels.. Where it will really shine is recording a Guitar master track on good equipment that recognizes those signals/ frequencies.. Can't blame me for a bad note, can even hear them as clear as they feel.. I was a skeptic until I tried a 24v on my own set of EMG 81/85. Gets royally nasty through this Orange All Valve Amp.. Worth a try if you're not tone deaf. 🙃

But if your running 2 active pickups you should essentially be able to use two of these because using one your actually cutting the voltage in 1/2 only running 12v to each pickup.

Current doesn't work that way. You've got to take into account the wiring as well. Current (however slight with actives) is going through your pots and the rest of your electronics as well. This is the reason that you don't hear a 'pop' when switching pickups, the voltage doesn't apply to only one pickup at a TIME when one is engaged, the full current that the electronics draw while engaged is applied to both pickups simultaneously at all times.

Thats the difference between series and parallel wiring but nah in all seriousness the power and ground doesn't get split anywhere and is tied into only one circuit.. So if yours does honestly read at 12v, you have wired it in a oppositional fashion that should be fixed immediately for fact your robbed of half capacities.. Should make your batteries last for a century though. 😅

I didn't lisen to this with headphones on ... but with them turned up load as someone else noted on the cleans there was a major difference ... but with the dirty it was minor compared to the clean. Makes me wonder if this mod will work for other system types then just emg's?

It would work with any other active pickups that use a 9V battery. You just have to make sure you dont go over the max voltage the pickups could handle. For example, TTK says the EMGs can handle 27V. Which would be ok to put 24V through. However another active pickup may have a votage max of 22V, which you could not use this mod on.

Yes it works with ALL active pickups. We have tested almost every single active guitar and bass pickup know to man, and some lessor known to man..lol

+Mark Kelley The Blackouts really don't need the extra juice. You get less compression and better dynamics from the much better designed Blackout preamp. You can use a 18 or 24 volt supply but there wasn't really any difference. Now on EMG's, it was quite noticable

HafidhMusic I know this is old, but for people just now seeing it, NO!!! Lol. The total voltage has a max of 27 which is 3 9v batteries. If you have 2 in there now and then use 2 of these to replace those then you will likely mess up those expensive pickups.

No. The maximum rating for EMG active pickups is 27V. You would overvolt the pickups and kill the electronics in the guitar. If you need high output that bad, put in high output passives with an actice boost for a higher output voltage.

+Collateral Damage Nah, those pickups you mentioned are great but for really low tunings, the low end falls apart quite easily. Nothing can compete with the tightness of an active pickup.

The pickups are designed to perform dynamically at 9v. Once EMG offers pickups that are designed for 18-24V optimized, then I’ll run 18-24V. Until then, I’ll stick with my 9V. The difference in sound to me personally is negligible. I can get that with a 20$ Behringer EQ pedal 😂. Just my 2 cents. Not hating on it, just don’t see (or hear) the hype. And if it’s the “feel” that’s different, I’ll just buy a 20$ Behringer Compressor/Sustainer pedal 👊🏻 Have a nice day 🤘🏻
