Hey everyone! Today we're taking a look at the highly requested '24v Mod' for our EMG modified Spector Eurobolt feautring double EMG BTC preamps. It's been said the added power increases 'headroom', and today we're going to find out what that means and if it's true! Let's do this!
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

I also thought the 24v battery mod made the bass a little clearer, and I thought I heard a little bit of break up from the amp on one of the notes with the preamp boosted. I don't think it made enough of a difference though to justify the assumed added expense and shorter life of the 24v battery. 20+ years ago I had an ESP 5 string with EMG Hz pickups and EMG 3 band preamp. I noticed shortly after purchasing it that when I dug in hard on the lower frets of the E and B string the tone would distort in a not so pleasing way. After doing some research and communicating with EMG I decided to add a second battery to create an 18v circuit. This mod did the same thing in that it gave the bass a little more output and clarity but it also gave the preamp the extra headroom it needed to completely eliminate the distortion problem. That was definitely worth the minor added time and expense.

Hi there Lobster! Glad to see you doing well and uploading, great vid as always! Lately I've had my eyes set on a Paul Reed Smith SE Kesterl bass which is PRS' take on the jazz bass and I wanted to say I'd love to see a review from you to see what you think! I have full trust on your honest opinion since it was thanks to you that I've discovered a lot of amazing brands and models I would've never found out otherwise. Keep up the amazing work and greetings from Argentina! Cheers!

That's an interesting mod. I did notice a cleaner /tighter signal. The preamp doesn't seem to give you much option of availabile tones though imho. It just stays in the mid range with a little flexibility.

The difference is very subtle, as would be expected. For an easy mod, it might be worth doing if the preamp is up to it. Thanks Lobster.

Hi Lobster, just started watching the video but the bass sounds great in both configurations. I just wanted to point out that on the 24 volt Mod website they don't recommend using the 24 volt Mod on preamps. I'm thinking because it may hurt the preamp. I also have a video on my KZbin page for this same mod. The batteries also have a much shorter shelf life, they normally last 3 months max. I'm actually switching back to 9 volt before I sell the bass in my video. Haha

Thanks a lot Lobster, interesting, even if with KZbin compression I am not sure I heard a tremendous différence... I have to try it on my next build (CDN PN5 in P position , Nordstrand MM5.4 in MM position and EMG BTC). anyway I plan to try 18v (2x9v battery either in series or // for 18 or 9V)

Nice. Better too end and harmonic information. I’d be curious what the difference would sound like in a mix or even in a live setting against a drum kit. Definitely an enhancement to the 2 pre setup (which is really nice btw).

So...the other day. I get this groove stuck in my head, and the whole time I’m breaking it down, slowing it down and speeding it up. I’m just taking it apart, adding notes, taking notes away....trying to make sense of it...what is the arrangement, who does it, are there words??? It wont go away!!! Why!!! What is this groove! Why is it so familiar!!! Hours and hours go by...i think i know what it is.....but no....is it??no....yes...no...i know the groove....but why can’t i place it.... Yep......... Am a tech and one of my go to mods for a J has been EMG Js with 3x9v/27v with no pre amp. Vol, vol, tone or with their active blend. Very big open sound and no clipping or compressing with heavy attack. Have had players who were not "into active sounds" enjoy this load. Nice to be able to get 24 in small form.

Lobster, I hear what you hear. With the preamps centered there is more clarity from the 24 volts. I find however at full cut the output boost is more prominent. At max any difference is less noticeable. I am new to playing Bass(only since July 21). Life long listener, my ears will sharpen with playing experience. So am I on the right track or miss the train entirely.

It doesn't give you more volume, necessarily. it should give you more headroom and dynamics. People think the point of more power is to be louder, but that couldn't be further from the truth - sometimes you need to push some air a long distance, but mostly it gives you some space to move around inside your gear instead of being locked or capped on your settings. And sometimes the preamp isn't set up that well and might have originally been designed for the higher voltage but due to whatever constraints they didn't want to put two or three batteries (or a more appropriate rechargeable battery pack) in the final delivery. It's really more about knowing what you have in your hands and what it will respond best to then matching the best solution to the platform as configured. If you don't know what that is, then experiments must be made or send it to someone who has already done that work and can just optimize mods/setup for your instrument.

interesting... although personally I can't risk this mod due to my future setup (hopefully i will get a good tone)and current playing style. I have a 2016 Jackson cbxnt iv which will get new electronics soon (emg P4+JCS and a OBP-3) and because i am playing reggae, i do not need any more treble, besides that I'm not even sure that pre can even take that many volts. regardless ...thanks for the vid Lobster.

@miguelfernandes333
@miguelfernandes333 2 жыл бұрын
Didn't hear a difference in sound, and one wouldn't. The main benefit of using more voltage is to give the circuit more headroom so that there is less chance of the signal clipping the rails. A really good test would be attacking the strings very strongly to compare the 9v and 24v. If with 9v there is some clipping or distortion, with 24v that should be minimized or completely cured. Important also to have in mind that clipping and distortion can happen on the input of the Daw or amplifier, but that is a different subject.

I think there's a difference in the transient of the note attack. It's crisper, a bit more pronounced with 24v. Perhaps the response of the amplifier (in terms of dynamics) isn't totally linear and the extra voltage might help remedy this.
@LeeJoRo
@LeeJoRo Жыл бұрын
I put an 18v mod in my Spector euro 5 LX (EMG soap bars). The output was way too much. Even at 0 on my interface, it was still clipping, so I roved it... Then I realised the controls were all at 100% when I should have started at 0 and blend from there. Oops. I'll put it back in tonight and try it again

The power supply has nothing to do with the output voltage. You are NOT getting more output with 18v vs 9v.
