Having used both for years - here’s what everyone misses: you get thicker tone with Active pickups and yes they are quiet. Very consistent no matter what you plug into or put in your signal chain. The trade-off is that you lose the “quack” in the second and 4th positions. You can make active pickups sound more vintage by backing them away from the strings. EMG have released a new range of Active pickups called Retro Active that preserve the quack factor. I have yet to try them.

This is a tough comparison for a couple of reasons. First of all, I noticed that Matt is playing the active pick ups more briefly and with less dynamics than he is the passive set. So that’s not exactly apples to apples. The EMGs are quieter and have a smoothed out even sound compared to the eric Johnson’s. The best way to hear a better comparison it’s to turn up the final master output so each set is coming across at the volume you would want to hear them when you’re playing against a song. When you do this, you realize that the EMG‘s are fatter sounding. Not thinner. A lot of listening mistakes are made when we are comparing two different sets at different final playback volumes. The trick on our ears is that often something that sounds less good in reality can sound more good if you’re hearing it louder. I had to dial back the listening volume each time Matt switched to be passive pick ups in order to get a similar sounding final overall volume. The Eric Johnson set Is brighter in frequency range than a standard fender set, so that should be kept in mind. Another valid point about the quieter EMG pick ups is that they hit the front end of your amp input softer and naturally won’t drive it as hard. This is solved by using a volume control of any type before going into the amp. Another way to think of the dynamics difference is that the EMGs will make you sound like you have the ability to play more smoothly and more under control. Some people might say that makes you sound like a better player, and there is some truth to that. However, if you are a very good player, you may very much want the Wilder dynamic range of the passive pick ups if you have the skills to control it and play into it.

People seem to be bashing the EMGs but I have both of these pickup sets. Each has its pros and cons. When I'm playing certain music where I want that no noise, cleaner, clarity even string volume and major sustain with music with a lot of bends, I tend to like the EMGS more for that application. I was using the DG20s a lot in the early 2000s with a band I was playing and the clarity is unmatched. I tend to go with the passive single coils when I really want more dynamics where I can dig in, and do some blues or jazz. The EMGs work so well in the studio for low noise recording more than passive single coils do. And these have to be the quietest pickups I've ever heard in my life.

Further to my previous comment I purchased a set of SAVX’s and I have to say the EMG have captured the sound of passive vintage pickups. They quack perfectly in the 4th and 2nd positions. I spent Hours AB Inv them to top of the range passive pickups and what I found was the passives to be slightly and I mean slightly warmer. I could dial in the warmth using the EMG tone control to match the passives. The moral of the story is don’t let anyone tell you they are sterile.... I can only describe it as not having to fight so much to get that tone sweet spot... the only criticism I can level at EMG is they offer so many variations it gets confusing and there are so few really good demos of the different versions on YT

I could see the active PuPs with high gain, but they lose too much on the cleans. The passives are much more dynamic and full of harmonics for low gain application, and then for high gain, they sounded good as well... and if you wanted to ditch the harmonic component, just roll off the tone. All the way around, the passives were the winner.

Disagree that the passives have more clarity. What I find with EMGs is they have fantastic clarity, but on clean sounds it's almost too clear to the point of being a bit "sterile." They also seem to pick up every little touch and slide of your fingers on the strings perhaps more audibly than some pickups.

You really need to run the EMG's with more than 9v, they open right up. There are mods for 18v (2x9v) or the 24v that uses the same sing 9v battery size but at 24v.
