I love the EMG SAs. The Gilmour tone of that PF era was epic. I had a set of these in one of my Strats but the battery kept dying. I checked with EMG and the problem was that shielding in the rout will create a circuit and kill the battery. I switched the pickups to a different unshielded Strat and have no problems now whatsoever. Great tone and versatility with no hum.

@Ndlanding

The EMGs don't need any shielding, as they are noiseless. Not even an earth (=ground) to the tremolo. I have the DG set, BTW, so I'm not just spouting hype.I do think, though, that if you insulated your battery (wrapping it in some tape), you wouldn't have that problem. No need for a new guitar!

@@Ndlanding I just got a FSR Signature (MIM with fat 50s pickups) that looks like the Black Strat (3 ply pick-guard instead of one). It looks and sounds great, especially for the price, but I'm thinking about getting one of the pre-wired sets featured in the video. Is that issue with the shielding paint shortening the circuit quite typical (you both seem to know a fair bit)?
@Ndlanding
@Ndlanding 2 жыл бұрын
@@raoulduke344 Hi, Raoul! I know a fair bit about SOME things, but I'm not an expert. Your FSR (I had to look this up!) is a signature, but whose? Hendrix? David G? Clapton? The point is, the FRS is meant to replicate some aspect(s) of some guitarist, but it's all a bit gimmicky in my opinion. But if you're happy with your guitar, and you say it sounds great, why spend more? AFAIK, only active (EMG in this case) pickup sets suffer when a guitar is shielded? Is yours? (Mine isn't.) But as I said, look into insulating the battery and maybe removing the earth (=ground) wire to the bridge/trem. Not too sure what your guitar is like inside.

I have a set of old SA's in a Warmoth Strat I assembled back in 1993 or so. I think my controls work a bit differently. The volume does what it does. The upper tone knob next to the volume works as a normal collective tone for all 3 pickups. With the lower tone knob at zero, it's like a normal 60's strat voicing. As the lower tone knob comes up, low mid range is added in along with at least a couple dB's of output signal boost across the full turn of the pot.

I had these back in 2002. One thing I noticed was how "clear" and "clean" these pickups are. Yes, they are less dynamic than passive pickups but I do think they have an important place in music. Sometimes I need that clear clean sound, where every note sustains and strings sound like they are all at the same level. My passive pickups sound great but sometimes when I bend notes on certain strings (like the high E) they pitter out and don't sustain (like the solo on Comfortably Numb). SSL-1 is my favorite pickup he used because of the sheer dynamics and tone of that pickup but the EMG SA pickups in my opinion overall sound better live, provide a noiseless cleaner tone, and sustain better, but it depends on what amp and effects you use as well. I just went and purchased these again since I just joined a Pink Floyd Tribute Band but without the EXG and SPC knobs. I want to try this first because honestly I didn't use them before so much. I think SPC was nice for a mid boost, but the EXG was kind of muddy sounding IMO.

Yeah even for high output active humbuckers for metal, the reason they're so popular isn't really just because they have higher output than passive pickups. It's mainly because they are so clean and neat and tight. They really make your tone very easy to hear and make sense of even at insanely high levels of gain. It really brings a definition and neatness, they sound so precise and tight. It's perfect for the mix, in a band situation. The guitar doesn't get muffled into nothingness like you hear a lot these days. The precursor to modern active pickups is one of my absolute favourite pickups in history. The Gibson single coil active pickups that Les Paul used on his own special version of the les Paul guitar, called the Les Paul Recording model. It's a strange guitar. It has low impedence pickups, and so it won't just plug into any old amp, you have to use specific rare types of cables and stuff. There eventually was a high impedence mode put in them for use with normal amps, but the main use of these guitars was for the recording studio, hence the name Recording model. With low impedence he just plugged directly into the mixing desk and it sounded fantastic. The pickups just sound astoundingly good. Les Paul absolutely loathed any type of overdrive or distortion, so these pickups are really only for clean tone. But they sound so good for that. There's no hum either of course. They just sound so organic and natural, and it's just honestly stunning how a completely dry clean tone can sound so good. But yeah then decades later, companies like EMG took the active pickup design of the Les Paul Recording model, and turned them into high output heavy metal monsters. But they still have that same precise tight defined tone that the les Paul recording pickups did. The les Paul recording model is one of my dream guitars. But they're ridiculously rare and expensive. They never really were made in high quantities. Basically only like the amount that a custom shop guitar would be made in. Gibson reissued it a few years ago but the pickups were just regular pickups, inside a shell that merely had the appearance of the original Recording pickups, but were built completely differently and sounded completely different. So it was just a funky looking but otherwise standard les Paul

Please keep the EMG’s: they’ve become vintage in their own right. One of the basses I play is a ‘71 CAR Fender Jazzbass I got from the first owner 20 years ago. He was a professional bassist back than. In the mid to late ‘80’s he had EMG’s installed in this bass. For years I wanted to swap them for passive ‘vintage’ pickups, but I never did... Why? Because soundpeople loved them, and some of them told me they think of them as vintage too now! I think your black strat sounds great! A great tone not heard that much anymore, but it will come back soon, because everything ‘80’s is hot now. Great playing too!! Kind regards, 🖖

Pro-Tips: You have to release the neck pickup to remove the old pickguard and install the new EMG DG20 pickguard. This is because the pickguard actually slides under the last fret on the neck. Some DG20 kits don't include the foam for the 9V battery. So save some soft foam from packing material. Their isn't really room for the 9V battery under the control knobs and pots, so you have to force the pickguard down and start screwing it in place. But align the screws for the loose neck pickup first.

Have you tried the newer X series EMG’s? The SA-X, according to EMG, has more headroom and “bridges the gap between active and passive pickups”. Could be a good option for the noiseless qualities of EMG’s whilst sounding and feeling more like a traditional passive pickup.

Played a Tele during the '80s and 90s with a SA and '85 fitted with the regular volume/tone setup. Loved that guitar and the pickups worked well with the type of music/gear and effects of the time. Recently fitted a set of SAs with the EXG and SPC to a Strat. The SAs sound okay, neither one thing or another, but lend themselves well for recording and post production EQ adjustments. What really brings them alive is the EXG and SPC controls. If you fit SAs... any active EMGs for that matter, you won't get the best out of them without the SPC/EXG controls... otherwise use an EQ pedal with them.

Thanks for the EMG demo. This is actually the EMG DG20 David Gilmour Signature Pre-Wired Pickguard with Active SA PUs in Black or White Pearloid. It is plug n' play (no soldering). There are EXP and SPC functions in the Tone controls. A no brainer to install in your Strat to experiment chasing Gilmour's Tone. Good Luck. HaHa. I wouldn't put the EMG DG20 in an expensive Fender Custom Shop Strat. Buy a less expensive Strat to be used as an experimental platform for custom mods like PUs, Electronics, Bridges, Tremolo, Tuning Machines, etc. like a EVH Frankenstein.

I am so sick of people (like on TGP and other forums I do like being a member of) putting down EMG active pups saying passive has tone pups on Strats have more tone......which is a bunch of crap..I play mostly I guess you'd have to call high end Strats and I have EMG SAs in all of them! Not really Gilmore model but close enough EMG SAs are the best single coil pups ever. Clean, Over driven clean, crunch or loads of gain all sounds great with loads of output and plenty of midrange, I haven't tried the actual Gilmore ones which would be I guess would be adding active preamps. I don't use as much FX as Gilmore so not sure but I may try them sometime. Great demo and thanks! FYI...Im I have my own studio so I mostly record and produce my own stuff (I've been told by many I sound like Gilmore .....or my solos do which normally Id take as an insult to sound like anyone else as being original it the most important thing.... but I think its meant as a compliment...Id hate to change my style because I play like anyone else and yeah I am a fan he's on my top ten.... Id love to play some Gilmore solos if you can point me in the way of some good backing tracks for fun that's be great and Id appreciate it! Great video...Thanks again! Since I have 4 Strats with EMG SAs my next one is going to I guess have the Gilmore preamp.

(Some) Guitarists get tired quickly of mid-range frequencies, including myself. Active pickups, humbuckers (in my opinion) are sort of mid-humpy effects based on true single coil. That`s why I traded my les paul for a tele. Though, I miss it sometimes, but I don't regret selling it. Of course humbuckers, active pups are a lot of fun but noway I can use them as my primary sound. At least for now. So, it's a strat and a tele for now. =)

The 57 Strat has one huge drawback - it is the truss rod adjustment nut in heel side, it’s always pain in one place to adjust it. I have 57 apple red with DG EMG set (old one: with old EMG logo and real wires inside NOT modern PCB) and it’s AMAZING! But this nut is killing me…
@willrichtor
@willrichtor 25 күн бұрын
Here's a trick for you that I learned from design choices on my old Mustang. It had a divot cut in the pickguard right where the truss rod adjustment was, so it could be accessed more easily just by loosening the bolts and tilting the neck. So my advice on strats is to mill/dremel/chisel a little channel under the pickguard that, when adjustment becomes necessary, you can just 1)slack the strings, 2) dive the bar(if it's a trem model) and block the bridge in the dive position for more room to work, 3)capo on the first fret to keep your winds on your pegs from shifting while you work with the strings slacked 4) unscrew the pickguard, 5)shift it out of the way, and 6) use a 90° screwdriver to adjust the truss rod. It's even easier if you do a string change along with it, and a good time to test the 9v with your tongue if you're using actives. That said, I have to admit, I'm the charmed individual who has a collection of over 20 guitars and in over 30 years, once I've done initial setup, have never had to adjust a truss rod. Not even on my Seagull 12 string.

Thinking about putting the DG20 in my DG clone

The red strat is the best looking guitar gilmour had and made me want a candy apple red strat with a maple fret board. Unfortunately, fender in my opinion doesnt make enough in this color combination that i have seen much

DG-20 set up is amazing but I would say it is very particular what pedals and amps that sound good with it. Took me a few years to get the right combination

Now I’m sold on these pickups

I have those pickups on both my guitars, a Charvel mod.4 (1982) and a Cort G290, both "Strat-type". Actually they're HSS, with two SA and a splittable 89 humbucker al the bridge. Wouldn't change them with anything else. Their clarity and cleanness is incomparable, in my opinion. :-) And they have enough output AND dynamics for anything you want to play... And I mostly use them with clean tones. Thanks for the video, as well as for all the OTHER videos you make. :-)

Who do you like your Cort G290? It still sells in my country and I intend to buy it.
@DavideBaroni
@DavideBaroni 5 жыл бұрын
@@stefanchernev4996 I like the guitar in its entirety. Good, comfortable neck, easy access even to the very last fret, excellent pickups with absolutely ZERO noise whatsoever, well balanced, Sperzel locking, Wilkinson tremolo (which is maybe the "weak link" in the chain, yet it's a good tremolo!). The tone is warm and the sustain excellent. The only thing I don't like THAT much is that when you split the humbucker the volume drops significatively, which does NOT happen on my Charvel Jackson mod. 4. And there's no midrange boost as in the Charvel, but I don't miss it that much. But I believe that a good setup of the electronics could fix this. When you set the humbucker "on", there's a nice boost in volume. Useful when you go from rhythm to solo. What else? Oh, it stays tuned very very well. :-)

@@DavideBaroni What about the vibrato? Is it OK for non-dive bomb use? And could you share some approximate weight, please?
@DavideBaroni
@DavideBaroni 5 жыл бұрын
@@stefanchernev4996 As far as I can understand, the vibrato is good. Once you have the right setup, it does its job remarkably well. I do not dive-bomb either, so vibrato is the only use I make of the tremolo, and I like it very much. The whole guitar, including strap, weighs about 3.6 kg.

That's not mentioned enough. The amount of tone you can coax out of that set-up is phenomenal. A friend of mine says it's like playing a Variax haha, he's not far off.

I got pretty lucky. Bought a dark red Mexican strat with these pickups in them for $280 total. I like them a LOT! I think I would prefer some good SRV-tone pickups that don't ever need a battery change in a main strat... But that means I'll need another one, because I don't want to get rid of the one I've got lol 😂

I always thought that EMG should manufacturer a combination of the SPC and EXG controls, but placed on a center detented dual gang balance pot, that was arranged so that at the center detent position, it would be off or down all the way, basically offering an audio bypass, but from the center detent to the fully clockwise position, it would progressively turn up the SPC for a mid boost, but from the center detent to the fully counterclockwise position, it would progressively turn up the EXG to cut mids and boost lows and highs in order to clean everything up. This arrangement would make much more sense ergonomically than having them on two separate controls, while also only taking up one control position instead of two...

They're a great set of PU and EQ, i got mine back in 94, after reading about his setup probably in GP mag, bought the components and built it for my 93\4 Strat +.. that strat is gone, but the set still kicks, went through several of my strats along the years, and permanently resides on a MIJ plywood strat copy, with a great maple neck and a bone nut(original)..and it sounds beautiful.. also added an SPC to one of my strats, with an assortment of fender single coils on and, it's doing a great work with these passive PUs.. BTW..i really loved DG sound with that strat, 84 to my recollection :)

Hello! I have a question not regarding guitars or effects, but chords David uses. Everyone who covers it seems to play the rhythm part for Another Brick pt2 with a Dm chord. But I have definitaly seen David play it using a Dm7 chord. You can see it/hear it on the live footage from Earls Court 94'. And most recently when he shows the white strat 0001 (for the auction), which he used for the recording. He plays a little rhythm, and not having the pinky on the 7th fret. Whats your take on this?? What do you think is on the recording vs live? Dm or Dm7? Is it the same on both? kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXaZnnyPg7RmidE Cirka 3 min 10 secs in the video.
