Activists work to heal damaging effects of redlining on minority Americans

One of the biggest drivers of today's wealth gap between Black and White Americans is redlining -- the practice of mortgage lenders denying loans to people based on their race or where they live. Although it was outlawed in 1968, its effects are still being felt today. Michelle Miller looks at how some entrepreneurs and activists are trying to reverse that.

@@kittylvoe456 They are talking about generational wealth that was able to accomplished by only a few until recently. I have a nice home in the suburbs to but I went to college and i understand my parents and grandparents weren't eligible for government loans that built generational wealth. @@kittylvoe456 if you are even a person of color since I see your comments on other videos of course backing the political party that is opposing black people, you need to stop thinking just because we’re in the USA that everything and everyone is perfect. It's really great to see these issues being brought forth in the news. This was all done by design. There are so many homes that should be worth more than what's declared, but because it's in a "red -lined" area they're not. And when Blacks have the ability to be a part of a more substantial neighborhood some of them get a little snooty/snotty and think they've arrived. Everyone truly wants to live in a decent community. So if you think about it this should be an issue that the powers that be in city, state, and federal government should be highly concerned. This can still effect any area. I was so hurt to learn that FHA was a part of this red-lining. I learned that and so many other horrifying issues in a book I'll recommend-"The Color of Law", by Mr. Richard Rothstein, of whom I had the pleasure to meet and listen to.

You can rebuild, reinvest etc.. all you want if you don't clean up the violent crimes or crimes in general in those community it will just be flushing money down the drain. Nobody will still want to live there. Relining isn't the problem it's the people who live in those communities causing violence, killing each other etc...is why their property value is worth nothing.

Usually the same stats for blacks applies to latinos because the rates of discrimination is very similar. So while its not a story about “latinos” fixing the problem helps the community as much as the black community. Its a two birds one stone scenario.

@@tonibutts8828 Yes, they were, actually. They have just enslaved native Americans instead of Africans, and former slaves who haven't had democracy in their countries and suffered the same discrimination. The difference is that if the Latino kids in my community even talk to a 'narco' (anyone besides a smart kid/family/teacher/tutor, so basically whoever their madre don't like) they gonna catch a chancla with the back of their head.

@@JusdoinstuF just because you like to say everything is racist, doesn't mean that it is. Blacks have more privileges than any other race. There are MANY colleges and universities that are only there for black people. There are MANY grant programs that are only there for black people. There are all kinds of programs that are only there to help black communities. It is not everyone else's fault that people choose to break the law, or that daddy left, or even that a person only wants to work at McDonald's. There are MANY successful black people in life. Therefore it all falls back on one's own personal choices.

@@Shane-bx8ws You choose to highlight one side of the issue and ignore the other so I know you are biased. Black schools were created because racists policies prevented blacks from attending white schools. Programs and grants are available to ALL races not just blacks now. You cant name a single piece of legislation that negatively impacted white people by race but there are MANY that targeted blacks. For example, when WW2 veterans returned home, they were given the G I bill to buy homes and attended college, blacks were EXCLUDED based on race. So try harder, you can't rewrite history.

@@JusdoinstuF there are no all white schools, that would be racist. There are no all white grant programs, that would be racist. There are no tv stations dedicated for white entertainment, that would be racist. Oh wow, you can name something that happened almost 100 years ago. Were you a black service member during WW2? Big deal. Black privileges have came A LONG WAY since then. Get over it. That was in the past. Way before I was ever born. Fact is, now days you get what you work for. So, step up and be a man. Be there for your kids, don't break the law, ditch the part time job and get a real job, move out of mommies home and get your own in a decent town, or part of the city.
