Having escaped from Vietnam as a boat refugee in 1981 to come to America at the age of 14, this story does strike a chord with me. A pleasant surprise to see Vietnamese descent actors in Hollywood. It would be unthinkable when I first arrived.

His real name is Hoa Xuan Nguyen. Xuan is his middle name.

No, it's his "Westernized" stage name. Xuande isn't a Vietnamese word.

That's how his art name goes, morph the given name a little

It's probably the closest transliteration of the sound he can think of. Some Vietnamese will pronounce the "x" with a flat "sh" sound while others will just pronounce the "x" with an "s" sound. It's a tomaato-tomahto situation. At least the "shawn" sound is something English speakers will recognize while still allowing him to use his Vietnamese name for acting credit.

He means white when he says Australian but he's saving everyone from getting triggered from hearing the word white as if racism doesn't still exist in Australia and the rest of the world
