"Crazy Rich Asians" is a landmark movie for one very big reason - it’s the first all-Asian Hollywood film in 25 years. The hope is that similar to "Black Panther," the success of "Crazy Rich Asians" at the box office would pave the way for more opportunities for Asian actors in Hollywood.

South Asian actors have much better opportunities in the UK than their American counterparts. As sad as it may be but that’s the way it is.

Musical-romance-comedy “Flower Drum Song” came out in 1961 with awesome singing, dancing, love stories, Chinese immigrants, Chinese-American younger generation and elders. This movie starred Asian cast of Nancy Kwan, James Shigeta, Miyoshi Umeki, Jack Soo, Reiko Sato, Victor Sen Yung, Benson Fong, Kam Tong and James Hong. It also starred Juanita Hall, an African-American, who played Asian character roles. This film was adapted from 1958 Broadway musical and based on a book by C.Y. Lee. Some may say the movie/musical had stereotypes and offensive, but it depicted Chinese family life and romance, set in San Francisco Chinatown. Like “Crazy Rich Asians”, it has love, culture, comedy, but also beautiful singing of Rodgers & Hammerstein songs and incredible dancing. Talented Nancy Kwan is Eurasian, but so is Gemma Chan (Astrid) who is Chinese/Scottish and Henry Golding (Nick) who is Malaysian/British. In Flower Drum Song, leading Asian man was handsome James Shigeta, who was torn between two love interests, plus his Chinese heritage and American culture. As little girl watching “Flower Drum Song” on TV in ‘60’s and living in SF, I identified with this wonderful Asian musical, which was revised on Broadway again few years ago. So with “Flower Drum Song”, Asians were represented 60 years ago on Broadway stage and in the movie musical. Check out this Asian musical classic "FDS".

@Miller Time True, but Nancy Kwan is still with us. Wouldn’t you agree when movie “Flower Drum Song” was made in 1961, they at least used talented Asian actors/actresses, instead of white actors pretending to be Asian, as in earlier “Charlie Chan” and “Good Earth” movies? As kid, I loved how my identity & culture was represented in Flower Drum Song, World of Suzy Wong, Joy Luck Club and later with Crazy Rich Asians, although I do not identify with being crazy rich. But fun movie to watch just the same.

@Miller Time Wow, just because a movie or musical is old, a young person should not see it? It's film history and one can learn much on how the world was viewed at that time. There are many classic musicals, especially Rodgers & Hammerstein, which are still performed today on Broadway, community theaters and high school theaters. "Flower Drum Song" was again performed on Broadway in 2002. "King and I," "South Pacific" and "Miss Saigon" has Asian characters and still continue to run in live theaters. Doesn't make sense for you to say a musical is so old, it should not have been made. Would you say the same for famous opera "Madame Butterfly"? "Crazy Rich Asians" will also become old in a few decades. Would you say the same about this movie in the future? "Flower Drum Song" has love story, Chinese culture, song, dance, life in SF Chinatown - it's a rom-com musical based on a book by C.Y. Lee. As a Chinese kid living in SF, I loved and identified with this lovely musical and proud it starred so many famous Asian actors of that time.

Someone really wanted to argue with me that black people have less representation than Asian people. Asian people are always casted away because we are the most quiet and make up the smallest percentage in the U.S.

I don't necessarily mind not a lot of Asians being in movies. My problem is that when they are they are almost always a stereotype or not the main lead. The shortage of Asian actors might just be a natural occurrence in which Asians just don't go for roles but it is odd that they are almost always just a stereotype. And trust me I'm a conservative domican dude in the Army who hates PC stuff. But even I get tired of Asians always being a stereotype/token. Black people at this point have pretty good representation and arnt casted all that much anymore as a stereotype and even take lead roles that are not stereotypical. Sorry for using the word "stereotype" so much can't find a better word for this subject 😆

Solution: Write a quality screenplay starring Asians and film it. If it's good, I'll give it a waych. If it sucks, Asian or not, I won't waste my time. Not racist, just like good movies. Hint: Avoid the slightest emulation of Black Panther. Arggghhhh!!
