Posted by Msgr Eric Barr ERNEST BORGNINE: Back in 1975, he was offered a part in the film Jesus of Nazareth. He tells the story: Our cast, directed by the renowned Franco Zeffirelli, included Anne Bancroft as Mary Magdalene, and Olivia Hussey as Mary, mother of Jesus. I played the part of the centurion who was present at the crucifixion, the one whose servant had been healed by Jesus. Much of the film was shot in Tunisia on the Mediterranean during January and February of 1976. A cold, damp wind continually knocked over floodlights and stung us with desert sand. I was uncomfortable in my thick leather uniform. My neck ached under a ponderous metal helmet, and I even began to pity those ancient Roman soldiers who were called centurions because they commanded 100 men. When it came time for my scene during the crucifixion, the weather was chill and gray. The camera was to be focused on me at the foot of the cross, and so it was not necessary for Robert Powell, the actor who portrayed Jesus, to be there. Instead, Zeffirelli put a chalk mark on a piece of scenery beside the cameraman. "I want you to look up at that mark," he told me, "as if you were looking at Jesus." "Okay," I said, moving into position and looking up at the mark as instructed. "Ready?" I hesitated. Somehow I wasn't ready. I was uneasy. "Do you think it would be possible for somebody to read from the Bible the words Jesus said as He hung on the cross?" I asked. I knew the words well from the days of my childhood in an Italian-American family in Connecticut, and I'd read them in preparation for the film. Even so, I wanted to hear them now. "I will do it myself," Zeffirelli said. He found a Bible, opened it to the book of Luke and signaled for the camera to start rolling. As Zeffirelli began reading Christ's words aloud, I stared up at that chalk mark, thinking what might have gone through the centurion's mind. That poor Man up there, I thought. I met Him when He healed my servant, who is like a son to me. Jesus says He is the Son of God, an unfortunate claim during these perilous times. But I know He is innocent of any crime. "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." The voice was Zeffirelli's, but the words burned into me-the words of Jesus. Forgive me, Father, for even being here, was the centurion's prayer that formed in my thoughts. I am so ashamed, so ashamed. "Verily I say unto thee, today shalt thou be with me in paradise," said Jesus to the thief hanging next to Him. If Jesus can forgive that criminal, then He will forgive me, I thought. I will lay down my sword and retire to my little farm outside of Rome. Then it happened. As I stared upward, instead of the chalk mark, I suddenly saw the face of Jesus Christ, lifelike and clear. It was not the features of Robert Powell I was used to seeing, but the most beautiful, gentle visage I have ever known. Pain-seared, sweat-stained, with blood flowing down from thorns pressed deep, His face was still filled with compassion. He looked down at me through tragic, sorrowful eyes with an expression of love beyond description. Then His cry rose against the desert wind. Not the voice of Zeffirelli, reading from the Bible, but the voice of Jesus Himself: "Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit." In awe I watched Jesus' head slump to one side. I knew He was dead. A terrible grief welled within me, and completely oblivious to the camera, I started sobbing uncontrollably. "Cut!" yelled Zeffirelli. Olivia Hussey and Anne Bancroft were crying too. I wiped my eyes and looked up again to where I had seen Jesus-He was gone. Whether I saw a vision of Jesus that windswept day or whether it was only something in my mind, I do not know. It doesn't matter. For I do know that it was a profound spiritual experience and that I have not been quite the same person since. What’s the point? If this is true, it doesn’t mean Jesus was really there or that Jesus is God or any other Christian beliefs. That’s one of the problems with Christianity . They take stories like this and present them as though they confirm their religion. They don’t.

@@user-ie2on7nc9y if you are born again, you will know you are going to Heaven! 😁 Read John 3:3-21. And how you know you've been born again is not how "good" you are (Isaiah 64:4-6) but your fruits (Matthew 7:15-23) if you've truly been born again there are gonna be fruits produced out of you that weren't produced before. This is called a testimony and if you don't have one, you're probably not saved. I'm not saying you have to have some insane testimony where you were once a drug lord and you're a follower of Christ and 3 years sober (that does happen, praise the Lord) but even something as simple as you used to swear and when you came to faith in Christ you turned away from that. We don't have to hope people are going to Heaven, we can know it by if they're born again or not. And we can always pray for people to get saved. The Word says to no be anxious of anything but pray about everything. Everyday we should pray for people to come know Jesus as that is the most important thing in life. God bless you ❤

Reminds me so much of what my late father experienced at age 51 when a hydraulic hose exploded in his hand literally blowing a 3 inch diameter hole all the way through his left palm. While in the hospital, he later told me that he had been lying in his bed in terrible pain and feeling sorry for himself when he saw a vision of Jesus hanging on the cross on his hospital room’s wall. Jesus looked at my Dad and said, “I have holes in both of my hands.” From that moment on, my Dad never drank or smoked again and lived to be 76 while living for Jesus. He had done both (drank and smoked heavily) for well over 30 yrs but lost his taste for both immediately when this experience happened to him. Rest in peace my dear Dad. ♥️

Even if you could call the Torah/bible/Quran evidence, it’s poor. For example, if the bible is egregiously faulty then the main character’s existence is likely fantasy. If the existence of Yahweh/Allah is a fiction (Muslims believe in the first five books of the Old Testament) then the god man/prophet Jesus cannot stand, nor any Abrahamic Prophet, such as Muhammad. Faith based on the contents of the bible/Quran is worthless for the following reasons… Of the Canaanite gods. El was the top god (sort of Roman Saturn) Ba’al (Jupiter) was next, then down the line was the war god Yahweh (Mars). The Jews nicked him and made him the creator. All nonsense. The first line of the bible is clearly incorrect. The Earth was formed at least 9.8 billion years after the heavens. How did the creator get that wrong? And, the rest of the creation is wrong. It’s as if an ancient ignorant tribe wrote it all by themselves, no god to help. There are no waters above the firmament. Heaven isn’t up there either, we’ve been there. The tribes of the Middle East wouldn’t have known oceans would be frozen but for the heat of the sun. Yet, in the biblical account, water filled the oceans and outer space, all with no sun. The light that made up the day was created before the sun. The ancients had no concept it was the sun that caused day and night onto a rotating Earth. The moon isn’t a light. It’s fiction by an ignorant tribe with no access to a god creator. Adam was made from dirt by magic and he, this god, forgot about Eve, an afterthought. so not an all knowing and wise god then? Snakes and donkeys talk, nonsense fiction, right up there with Harry Potter, though JK Rowling was clearly a better writer with fewer continuity errors. This god set up Eve by placing this magic apple within her reach, before she knew right from wrong. Then punished humanity thereafter. What a vicious god, if not a fictional one. Nonsense fiction, by an ignorant ancient people writing about their mythology, their nation’s origins, steeped in the mists of the past, just the same as the Greek, Persian and Babylonian cultures write about their make believe gods who were equally fervently worshipped. Inanna, the dying and rising goddess was such an example. But many more dying and rising gods in the lexicon of ancient myths. Virgin births were pretty common too. Adam and Eve’s children (as Eve was a clone of Adam) and grandchildren (as Cain, Able and Seth only had Eve to produce offspring or with their unknown sisters) could only have been produced by incest, then double incest, according to the biblical account. But, as Eve was a clone of Adam, there would be no genetic diversity. Such a lack of diversity would have meant the death of the human species, ask the Hapsburgs. But then, their god wouldn’t have known about genetics? Of course not. The Exodus apparently didn’t happen according to all evidence, acknowledged by the Jewish archaeologists who have tried to find it. The Egyptians never wrote of their army being swallowed by the sea. Mosses may never existed. There is a massive amount of genocide in the bible by a god who failed to get the locals to behave. Genocide because the Israelites needed a land to make home. If a creator of the universe and humans could have just thought a new land, a new island, south of Cyprus, it would have appeared. Easy for a god, not so for an ancient tribe to pull off? Then, this god could have told these others how to behave and punished individuals, if that’s what was needed. But no, he went straight to mass murder. What? And, the greatest god in the universe was defeated by iron chariots: Judges1:19. That is so ridiculous, such a puny god. Or, is it because the story was a creation of a tribe that had no concept of future technologies or tactics to defeat these new Iron Age chariots? I’m sure that a human Napoleon type tactician could have done better than the all wise, all powerful fictitious creator god. Genesis 19 tells us of Lot being raped by this daughters. And yet this god is moral? He could have changed the course of their predicament, found him a younger wife or servant to sleep with, if a god. More incest. Abrahamic religion is a blood sacrifice barbaric religion. The books that were supposedly written by Mosses consist of a linguistic style that didn’t exist at the time of his “life”. It’s a fictitious narrative, written by the Jews to give their new nation an historical legitimacy, and unify them, in the midst of other powerful cultures in the Middle East. Didn’t help much though, they were constantly being invaded and subjugated by more powerful “gods” of other warring nations. Even Yahweh acknowledged there were other gods. Remember the Ten Commandments tablets that were conveniently broken and then without fuss, lost. An all powerful creator of the universe who missed the opportunity to create the tablets out of an advanced technology, Titanium or, something really exotic perhaps? Is that because the Jews didn’t know about such a thing with no understanding of the future? The forging and preservation of such a technology would have cemented the truth of their god. Broken conveniently disappeared stone tablets: clearly, no god involved. Noah and his flood occurred when the Egyptians where going about their cultural and religious practices that continued afterwards; and, their religion was not replaced by the flood family’s immediate ancestors, fanning out from the ark. The Pharaohs and their gods continued unabated. No Yahweh? More incest? The Chinese culture and writing developed along a continuum and they too were never taken the religion of Yahweh from the Middle East, by Noah’s relatives. And, the ancient Britons and Australians failed to notice they were meant to be dead. The New Testament, if it is read, critically, is inconsistent and evolves over time. Indeed, the gospels were not written for decades after the death of this Jesus, whose birth and death are still questionable and no date can be asserted with clarity. There’s no evidence that all the first born were killed either in Egypt nor by Herod. I think the Egyptians would have recorded such a calamity and the calamities of the plagues, but nothing. Was it all made up? There is real historical evidence of John the Baptist, but not of the greater Jesus. There is historical evidence of Apollonius of Tyana, who allegedly ascended to heaven, similar to Jesus, but there is no extra biblical evidence of Jesus during his lifetime. There is an historical record of Jesus Ben Pandera but, no Jesus the Galilean outside of the bible. Nothing. There’s Jesus ben Ananias, a rude peasant, who went around Jerusalem in 66CE prophesying its fall in 70CE; he’s recorded in documents outside the bible, but not the biblical Jesus. His alleged disciples never wrote anything they were uneducated peasants. Contemporaries never recorded his miracles nor his troublesome nature. The bible account says he was widely known and a divisive figure that the Romans never recorded. Neither did the Jews. And, the crucified were left to rot on the cross/pole on which they were hung as a warning to insurrectionists? No empty tomb, it’s a fiction to turn a myth into a “fact”. To turn a dead man or a fictional man into god. Pilate was, in real history, recorded history, a truly nasty contemptuous man, he would never have allowed the process of crucifixion as a warning to have been undermined. And, the alleged trial is a tale of the blood cult of scapegoating. Even Barabbus was a literary device representing scapegoating, suggesting it never occurred. Barabbus means, son of the teacher, or son of the father. The gospel writers where representing the two characters as essentially the same, one became the goat sacrifice. And, the twist was that the Jews shouted to let the murderer go, allowing the blame for Jesus’s death to be placed on the Jews and not the imperial Romans. It was very much a political narrative because the Jews and Romans where essentially at war, the destruction of the Temple in 70AD/CE, and this new sect/cult needed to distinguish themselves from the Jewish troublemakers, and the ongoing violence of the time. Paul never knew Jesus and only depicted him as a spiritual vision. He knew nothing of the man and nothing of his life or his teachings. More evidence that the Chrestos (anointed) was mythical? The first time the gospels were mentioned was in 180AD/CE by Irenaeus. Indeed, a very prominent Christian, Theophilus, said that he came to believe in Jesus from reading the Jewish Scriptures or, Torah. No mention of the gospels, no quoting of anything Jesus allegedly said. Best date for the gospels is circa, 170-182AD/CE. The myth of the god man Jesus was created over many years. Mark was first written, not until at least 70AD/CE, say Christian scholars but, as above, likely much later. No record of the star of Bethlehem, of the graves emptying, or the sky darkening. It’s fiction. No Mosses, Abraham, No Noah, no Flood. As for flying horses in the Quran, that’s straight out of Greek mythology. No one should believe in such nonsense today.

When I went to Medjugorge in 1990, I had a picture taken of me on Apperition Hill. When the film was developed by Walmart, I was a silhouette in the picture. There is a beam of light that comes down from the sky and passes in front of the Cross that marks where the Bleessed Mother Mary appeared to the six children . When I saw the picture, I saw an image of Christ in the picture. He was in the top right corner of the picture. The trip was amazing. God Bless you and your family. ❤❤

It is the word used for worm in this verse: "But I [am] a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people." (Psa 22:6 KJV) Jesus was so bloodied He didn't look like a man any longer. In that case, would mean that a "perfect justice" exist!! ..on the other hand, if a "perfect justice" does not exist anywhere, the only thing that exists would be chaos? @Dawkinsbulldog@Dawkinsbulldog There could be many different answers to your accusations. First, the Bible is tainted. You have many chances for false information to make it's way into the story. The written could get it wrong. The translation adds its flaws. Then you have the authority. Deciding what gets into the Bible. It's still going on up until to current day. Hence us being warned of two things. Those who try to lie in the scripture, will be judged for it. And the reader is warned to have discernment. Without ever asking for discernment, common sense alone should be some guidance. Seems people toss out both. Why? Personal agenda? Evil influences? Either the words read, that don't make sense, are either changed by evil. OR, in our limited understanding, we just don't "get it", yet. Keep praying. Keep seeking. The answer ALWAYS comes. Now, to Mary. Regardless of anything, she WAS His Mother. How do you Mother the Son of God??? I am asking you sincerely, since you believe you can judge her. Regardless of what she knew, she was still shackled with the responsibility to raise him. Teach Him. PROTECT Him. What was her reasons for denial? We don't know. Maybe she was doing her HUMANLY BEST at those responsibilities. Or maybe, she did have a form of amnesia. She wouldn't be the first, not even nearly the last, to be given information, then have it blocked for such a time that would be relevant to God's will. It's even spoken of in the Bible. Of all the things you stated the accusation that Mary should not cry, at the sight of her SON AND SAVIOR, being tortured and nailed to the cross, makes me question what kind of person are you? I am NOT EVEN HIS MOTHER, yet I weep at the thought. Now, tears in my eyes writing this. How could I not? If it were just some lost soul, tortured and hung, I would cry. KNOWING He did it for me is almost too much. Yet, somehow, you think the woman who BIRTH HIM would watch and do what exactly? Sincere question! Do you not feel sympathy and empathy for others? I mean just everyday people. Forget about the MAGNITUDE OF OUR SAVIOR! How could you see anyone face what He faced and not FEEL SOME SADDNESS? I will pray for you. You have been led astray. You are a lost sheep. I pray THAT YOU PRAY FOR DISCERNMENT. You are not even a drop as clever as you think you are. While I don't worship Mary, I am much in awe of her. Admiration abound. Hand picked by God Himself! Who can say she was not special? Certainly not you. I assure you that much. God bless

Ernest, was such a sweet and honest man, his crew and him was filming at a truck stop I was working at years ago. I wanted a picture with him and he told one of his head guys to take the picture of us and get my address, The girl I was working with would not give her address. They were filming a commercial for "Dayton Tire Company". I told her she was crazy, sure enough I received my picture from Ernest signed and all through the mail. Then he was blacklisted by Hollywood-meaning you’re living right. There were more events that took place, several ppl accepted Jesus & was Saved. I watched Earnest Borgnine in McHale’s Navy. My mother, God rest her soul. She was involved in 1963 in a horrific car crash. They rushed touch of the emergency room half her head was open. Her ear was hanging off and there was much glass in her face. She was very aware of her surroundings through the agonizing pain, she was also in the car with her stepsister who was not hurt as badly. She heard the other nurse talking to the doctor saying that after you're finished with her doctor, should I put her in the same room with her stepsister? The doctor said no, she might not make it through the night. My mother said the pain was so severe that the only thing that she could do was say the Lords prayer as the doctor was pulling glass from her head while stitching her up. They did not give her any medicines or painkillers as they had to move quickly to stop the bleeding. She said when she said the Lords prayer she saw the face of Jesus, the same described hearing this video. She said that she felt no pain. He looked at her with eyes that were taking all her pain away and putting it upon himself! My mother went on to tell me that should not care if she lived that she felt no pain. She just felt joy. She told me this when I was a little boy five years old. I would ask my mother as I grew all the mom did it really happen that it really happened that you really see Jesus she would always say yes Bob it was as if he was there in the room with me and took all my pain upon himself. It stayed with me as I'm a Christian. God can take all things that are bad and make them for his glory and he uses me as a seed to the truth. My mothers email was SUSAN Jeanette visionary 63@comcast.net. It stayed with her for the rest of our life until she went home with the Lord.!!

I had the pleasure of talking to Ernest Borgnine for about 20 minutes many years ago. It was in a medical clinic in L.A. run by a Dr. Dorr who specialized in hip and knee replacements. I was there with an older lady who was going to get a hip replacement. We were sitting in the waiting room when Mr. Borgnine came in with a lady and sat right across from us. I told him how much I enjoyed his work and he was extremely nice and humble. I also told him how I had just watched him in "From Here to Eternity" and what a nasty character he played, and admonished him for it! He just chuckled. R.I.P., Ernest.

I have always loved Ernest Borgnine every since I was a young child. I never heard this story before and I can only imagine how profoundly such a gift must have touched him. Some people just give off a calming embrace of light that bespeaks of an inner peace and love and, even without ever meeting him I could feel his light. whether your cup overfloweth with invisible light or you shine with a brilliant darkness, all contrivances work toward his purpose. It makes me happy to know Mr Borgnine was here to share his light with so many and help to make the World a better place with it. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Happy Easter!

The movie that really spoke to my heart was MARTY! the one where he was a butcher, young and single, taking care of his elderly mother. He knew he was a husky, somewhat homely young man, and women wouldnt give him a first look let alone a second!! He gets fixed up on a blind date and it seemed like it would go well, but he was cast aside for a very handsome wealthy man at the dance he and his date met. The story progresses through the emotional hurt Marty feels and doubts he will ever find a woman to love and marry. This hit home with me on the emotional level, as I am husky but not homely; being overlooked for the male model types! Oh, women love me " as a friend "!!!!! I truly felt Marty's pain and anguish in that movie. It was Ernest Borgnine's big break in Hollywood! He went on to play many supportive roles in his career. I believe his faith was rewarded by God in this world and pray that it continues in the afterlife!

I have NO problem whatsoever believing this story. I've had an encounter of my own in 2014 that instantly changed everything I'd ever known. I felt that same, overwhelming, enveloping feeling of compassion, forgiveness and a love I never knew could be SO powerful and pure and, best of all, Jesus briefly appeared before me and it too didn't last but a moment..or, so I thought. When I "came back" from said 'transition', it had been almost 50 minutes! I was right back where I started, sitting up in my bed, still looking down at the book I was reading. That book happened to be Sun Tsu's "The Art of War" (which would come to play a part in this two weeks later after it happened) which I thought to be a strange combination - between that and my Bible. Up until that point, I had only read certain books from it from time to time with a main focus on Daniel and Revelation. After my 'transition' (which is what it IS called), I was prompted to sit down and read my KJV from cover to cover. I did it in just over a month and that's when things started to be revealed to me. Things in my immediate surroundings that I never saw before...secrets. Things most people don't see because that's what the Lord does for those who actively pursue Him. He reveals secrets. REAL secrets that answer the questions of life! Funny thing how that works though. I might understand the secret but am powerless to share it because God makes it that way! He does it so each of us will seek Him on their own by their own free will. It's NOT about "religion"! It's about KNOWING JESUS AS PERSONAL FRIEND THAT YOU ACTUALLY TALK TO EVERYDAY! He likes to be thanked once in a while like anyone else does. Sheesh. After all He did lay down His LIFE!!! People are unbelievably foolish because they've never met Him PERSONALLY. If people would just give Him 5 minutes of their time, they'd find out that He's the coolest person I've ever met! And..that feeling. Admittedly, I have lied about allot of things in the past BUT..the one person that I do NOT lie about is my Lord. I no longer fear death and I look forward to being back in His presence! There is no drug that even comes close! For a long time I wondered 'why me?' I certainly didn't deserve such a wonderful and wonderful gift. I think He's appearing to all of His sheep so that we will KNOW that feeling that ONLY comes from Him! It's His 'calling card'..if you will. It's so that the flock is not deceived by what's coming very quickly. Now I KNOW that..if I don't feel that wonderfully all powerful love, it's a deception. I'm telling my brothers and sisters in Christ so that they took will be aware..if He hasn't already been to your house yet. He's coming. Make NO mistakes about. He's as real as it gets! He's actually MORE real. This place is actually a temporary, false reality that is nothing more than a training/proving ground to see what side of the fence a person is going to choose: good or evil. There is NO middle ground. This is the "church age" right now, where "all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved." I highly advise you to get right with Jesus Himself while you have that choice. Once He comes to remove the church (you and I) martyrdom will then become the price of salvation. Don't wait to talk to Him. He takes you as you are, then HE makes the changes because you've TRULY surrendered your heart to Him. Geez man..let Him drive! He's the best friend I have ever had and ever will. He's just plain cool!

Wow. Thank you for a great reply! Especially encouraging to come as you are, because He makes the changes. You'd be surprised how many Christians think they have to be perfect before He will accept them, and then will have to go to hell if they screw up. You present Jesus in such a warm and personal way. I know Him the same way. It's not a religion, it's a relationship with a real, loving Person, Who also happens to have all Power and Authority in Heaven and Earth, whose Name is above all names, and Who is our High Priest that ever lives to make intercession for us....and so much more, as revealed in the Bible. I turned the wheel over to Him 50 years ago...what a ride!!!!! ❤❤✝✝

The story of the Centurian approaching Jesus to help his servant is one of my favorite stories in the Bible. This story of Ernest Borgnine playing that Centurion and seeing the face of Jesus is absolutely moving.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ernest Borgnine at the Villas of Grand Cypress when I was a maintenance man. It was the grand opening of Universal Studios. I have to say with all sincerity, Ernest Borgnine was a real cool dude, one of the most down-to-earth people you ever want to meet. He had a limo outside of his villa waiting for him for the grand opening, and he's was trying to get his items out of his safe so he could leave. I'm happy to say I came to the rescue, got that safe open and got him to Universal Studios on time!! 😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉 excellent Tipper by the way!🎉

I loved him in Jesus of Nazareth, he is the one who removed his helmet at the crucifixion and helped allowed Mary and Martha and Magdalene and John to come through the ring of guards.

That’s true. He was the centurion who already knew Jesus was the messiah. He sought Jesus help to cure his servant then sick back home. He told Jesus that Jesus need not go to his house to physically cure his ailing & dying servant but for Jesus to only will it & believed that his beloved servant he treated as his son will be cured & saved. That’s what says in the mass: “I am not worthy to receive you but only say the word & my soul shall be healed.” In respect for Jesus as the messiah he took off his helmet knowing that Jesus was already dead then allowed Mama Mary & the rest of the family to get nearer to Jesus nailed on the cross. A simple gesture by a mere centurion but says a lot.

The actor who played Jesus in Jesus of Nazareth also nailed that look of pure love and sympathy that Jesus must have had. It was in his eyes.

Yes! Robert Powell is the perfect character to play Jesus! His eyes, his built, his voice..soooo perfect for the role of Jesus! It’s really bcoz of him that I kept on watching Jesus of Nazareth. He gives justice to the role of Jesus unlike other films of the same story. Franco Z was also sooo damn good director that the film was perfectly executed. The soundtrack was perfect it makes you goosebumpy! The story was accurate according to the Bible making the story composed of the 3 Mysteries of the Holy Rosary: The Joyful Mystery, The Sorrowful Mystery & The Glorious Mystery. For me, the film is PERFECT!

In the real scene 2,000 years ago, the Centurion proclaimed the truth immediately after he'd pierced the side of Jesus and saw blood AND water gushing out. I can only imagine the magnificence of that scene, surrounded by Mary, Mother of Christ and St. John the Apostle at the foot of the cross. The grace given to this actor, whilst extraordinary, would have been but a shadow of that experienced by the Centurion back then.
