Swedes Omar Rudberg and Edvin Ryding of Young Royals fame were totally forgotten. Same with Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa and Connor Swindells. Even Aaron Piper and Omar Ayuso from Elite. Other actors from Elite's gay/bi character stable include Alvaro Ricco, Miguel Herran, Andre Lamoglia, Jorge Lopez, Nuno Gallego and Fernando Lindez.

Of course, an exhaustive list of this kind (forgetting the huge number of "oh, by the way" gay/bi roles many male actors have taken) would require a documentary series! But just within the scope of this video, it really should have been called "Straight actors who..."

Recency bias rears its head again. Lets start all over. We have Billy Crystal who played Jody on Soap and Darren Criss who played Blaine on Glee on Television. Peter O'Toole who played Laerence of Arabia, Hillary Swank who played Brandon in Boys Don't Cry, and Aiden Quinn who played Michael in An Early Frost.

While I am not a big fan of red, white and royal blue (the film, the book is good). I do want to mention that Nicholas Galitzine played a gay character before. Which was quite brave back in 2016 as it was still considered a career killer and not was not as cool as it is now. So you might want to check out „Handsome devil“. In my opinion it‘s way better and with more depth than his seconds gay role. Also it features Andrew Scott. Who leads to another actor who gained more success trough a gay character: Paul Mascal in „All of us strangers“. And let’s not forget one of the most heartbreaking gay movies ever made: Philadelphia. Which stars a still quite young Tom Hanks in a stellar performance and an back then almost unknown Antonio Banderas as his partner. An even braver decision of Hanks because the film came out 1993 and was one of the- if not even the - first major movies ever made that showed a wide audience that love is love and that the love between two men is not all about s*x but is just as caring, tender and deep as „heterosexual love“. It’s also about AIDS and the fight for your rights. If you have never seen it - watch it now!
