Tate's generalization of Christians is definitely wrong, however it is true that many Christians in Europe are how Tate describes. The majority of Europeans still identify as Christian even though according to Pew Research, most of them don't even believe in God. Unfortunately, most people conflate cultural Christianity with being the same as being a Christian who actually has a relationship with Jesus, especially Muslims. Muslims consider everyone in Muslim countries and cultures to be Muslims, even if most of them don't even believe what the Qur'an teaches or follow Muslim teachings. They view Christians the same way and conflate Christian with anyone being from a "Christian country" or "Christian culture."

In his mind, converting to Islam simultaneously allows him to command that fear and respect from others while shielding him from his fear of the perceived violent consequences of mocking it. My guess is Christianity was always too "soft" for him. 2.
