For the rest of this review, I”m going to talk about the overall design, show you the protection it’s actually going to offer your camera lens protector and do an image comparison.
Installation of the Shellrus Sapphire lens protector is done by wiping it down with a giant Zeiss wipe, dabbing it with dust stickers, peeling the black piece and plopping it on your camera lens. Easy.
Like every other glass camera lens protector I’ve used, there isn’t a layer of adhesive over the camera lens, just on the ring. The only product that had adhesive was the Zagg Fusion glass and that was just terrible.
Now the glass that Shellrus actually uses is synthetic Sapphire which is not the same as the tempered glass that everybody else uses. More on that in a couple of minutes.
The Sapphire glass sits on top of an aluminum ring that is chamfered a bit. This chamfering is actually quite useful from my perspective because there isn’t an edge for things to catch on and subsequently pull off the protector AND it’s not as in your face as much. Shellrus’s protectors look a little more subtle than the BAM color of the Rhinoshield.
Now Shellrus’s Synthetic Sapphire has a hardness of 9H on the Moh’s scale. Everybody else claims to have 9H hardness as well but that’s on the graphite scale. The Apple iPhone’s lens has something similar to Sapphire.
So here’s a shot of an actual 9 pick on the Shellrus protector. Nothing happens. Here’s the 9 pick on the normal tempered glass screen protector. Rubbing the lens with the pic results in visible scratching.
AND here’s what bothers me the most about other camera lens protectors. They claim to protect your camera lens from scratching BUT everything that’s going to leave a mark on those protectors won’t leave on mark on a bare camera lens.
If I take my 9 pic and rub the bare iPhone lens, there’s no visible scratching that you can see in the video. Here’s a shot of it on a different part of the lens. Can you see the scratching like you did on the tempered glass? No.
The level of protection that non-Shellrus products are offering is akin to wrapping your finger in toilet paper in the hopes of not cutting yourself while you learn how to use a chef’s knife. It’s hoping that wearing an extra t-shirt during a down pour is going to stop your other t-shirt from getting wet.
Now when it comes to photo quality, the Shellrus product didn’t perform as well. Remember, the glass just sits on top of the camera lens so weird anomalies are going to happen.
BUT photos that don’t involve pointing directly at a light source will be fine as this photo Monty shows. For the wall light in my office, you can see a bit of ghosting from the lights and the ghosting is very noticeable on the lamp by our NAS.
Shooting the sun under cloud cover didn’t show anything other than the color of the photo being a little warmer which is something that seems to occur for all the other shots.

When you used that pick directly on your actual camera lens I had to look away! If/when I update from iPhone XS I will consider the Shellrus because overall it seems way more protective than the others you reviewed AND your partner didn’t lose them on her phone too!

The Rinke 'Camera Styling Aluminum Frame ' is strictly speaking not useless. At Apple they seem to have forgot that the ring around the lens glass is supposed to make the lens recessed. So when you place the iPhone down, nothing touches the sense glass. The Rinke adds this back.

It’s been awhile since I looked into the sapphire screen protector market. I think Shellrus might possibly be sourcing their protectors from lmos. When Shellrus initially launched, some of their marketing material was identical to the lmos ones. Or maybe both lmos and Shellrus source for the same supplier.

What you don’t get the concept of doofus is if you wrap your finger in that tissue paper and that chef’s knife happens to knick you, you’ll be protected by the tissue ergo if you hit your camera and it gets hit with a protector on there you can then remove the protector....you don’t make any sense and your one directional thinking

Don’t buy this junk. I paid 36.00 for these lens protectors and one cracked. So I emailed Shellrus about one replacement. They informed me I would have to buy three new lens covers and that they don’t sell one single lens. To me that’s a complete scam by the company. These lens covers may not scratch but they certainly crack easily. After paying 36 dollars for these and they try to con you into buying another set. Oh they did offer a 20% discount on a new pair. Don’t waste your money. Again they may not scratch easily but boy do they break easy. 😡
