One of the darker aspects of this, as if it wasn't already terrible enough, which was talked about in one of the sections towards the end, is that Maupin apparently spent a good bit of time thoroughly studying cults and cult tactics of indoctrination and manipulation, even going so far as to attend some meetings and events of some culty groups to see firsthand how they brought new members in and the methods they used to psychologically manipulate people, and he used those methods inside his groups. So, this isn't *just* a story about a narcissistic and egomaniacal sex pest who was exploitative and abusive to the people around him as part of his own messed up behavioral patterns. No, he *intentionally* organized and structured his groups and their events and internal dynamics, with knowlege, planning, and forethought, to be like a cult that would manipulate and exploit people.
