Ska was the perfect blend of Caribbean and post-punk Britain, young people were politically active against rising unemployment and lack of opportunities. Not only did Ska provide a vehicle for integration and change, the music was uplifting, fun and made those days a fantastic time to be alive.......the look and influence survive today

You’re 100% correct…except that ska started in the early 60’s, with Lauren Aitken, Prince Buster, the Skatalites, etc. What you’re talking about is specifically 2Tone/2nd wave. Bob Marleys first recording was actually a ska song…Simmer Down. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones do a great cover!

The extended version of this song has a special place in my heart. it has a haunting trombone solo by ska and reggae legend rico Rodriguez who worked with the band previous to this release. It doesn't only just reflect how Britain was back then but how it is now.Britain is grey and this reflects how we feel
@BrennanYoung
@BrennanYoung Жыл бұрын
completely agree. It's a great song, and the trombone does it for me every time, also that little triangle-wave synth figure before the full brass stabs. Amazing arrangement. Extended version has all that extra space, proto-dub, and you're right that this is as politically relevant now as when it was recorded.

Reggae directly from Jamaica was big in The United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s but we missed all of the reggae and ska from England during that same time period. I don't know why it wasn't promoted here but it wasn't. Ghost Town, Nelson Mandela, etc., remain very obscure songs in the United States. As such when they are heard here they are just pure pieces of music and not tied to the economic and cultural events of the UK in the 1980s.
@jonpark5203
@jonpark5203 11 ай бұрын
this song and wave of music was very much tied to the economic and cultural events of what was going on in the uk at that time, with high unemployment, punk-rock,skin heads,strikes,mass rioting, football hooliganism,the troubles in northern ireland, margaret thatcher (The iron lady)was unfortunately our prime-minister at that time, you name it..if you had lived in the uk late 70s early 80s ??? you would have known all about it..this song and band very much reflected how much the youth of that time felt in the uk@@jmecklenborg

The Specials are still around and still political, having had a couple of albums out recently. This song is about the state of inner cities in the early days of Margaret Thatcher's government in Britain. Worth listening for the message, but also just for the sound, which is unique. This is Two Tone ska - racially integrated bands playing punk-influenced ska. The name originated in the record label set up by The Specials in Coventry.

One of my all time fav bands. Always amazed how a group of 18 and 18 years olds could create such complex and socio/politically aware music. The racial mix of the group was a deliberate affront to the growing tide of racism and the National Front movement that was gathering momentum in early 1980s Britain. Other worthy tunes from them = Nite club, Stupid Marriage, TOO MUCH TOO YOUNG, Rat Race, Pearl's Cafe, Friday Night Saturday Morning, Just Cant Stand it (Rhoda Dakar on vocals with Terry Hall) and their other big hit "Do Nothing". This band had a huge influence on the subsequent American Ska revival later in the 80s and beyond...i.e. The Go Gos, Gwen Stefani/No Doubt, ...also Blur and Amy Whitehouse was a huge fan appearing at their reunion gig Glastonbury, she was as thrilled as us in the audience that they were back together.

They were very nice. Full of questions and wanting to know the scene there. I guess they spoke to everyone. One of the best of Britain's ska revival bands of the 80s. Great memorable songs, often with sharply political messages - in this case the song is about how inner city youth were running out of places to go for entertainment because the cities had been run down so badly. For one of their more upbeat songs, try "A Message to Rudy". Other ska bands worth checking out run from The Beat and The Selecter through to the tongue-in-cheek glory of Madness.

I'd like to see a reaction to some "skinhead reggae". (reggae from 1968-1970) one of the best modern bands of that style today would be "the Aggrolites". "Ghost Town". was the Specials' swan song. A non-album single that surprisingly rose to #1 in the UK, it's a lot more musically complex (and a lot slower) than most of the Specials' other songs. The recording took a long time and was contentious. Right after the band played this on the TV show Top of the Pops, singers Terry Hall and Neville Staple plus guitarist/singer Lynval Golding announced they were leaving to form their own band called Fun Boy Three.

Special memories for me. I’ve seen Jackson many times. I was the baby of the family but my older sisters & brother brother-in-law’s,sister-in-law’s, friends & at times we’d take my parents. We’d bring our blankets to the MannMusic Center in Philadelphia lay them put on the lawn seat area & settle in for some great music from one of the greatest songwriters & them keys🎹! We would mingle with strangers who back then ended up seeming like close friends we just met…such a different time. I was blessed to have been raised on great music from Jackson to Zeppelin to Floyd to Taylor…I was young when we started & we continued concerts of all different artists throughout my adulthood. I have taken my children at a young age to many concerts & they carry that on. It will never have the peaceful atmosphere as it did back then but I have so many wonderful memories & have met many wonderful people over the years. It’s bittersweet my mom dad & 1 of my sisters died too young & I miss those times. Jackson’s catalog of music is long & great. (Your bright baby blues ) was my sisters favorite song. (Daddy’s tune) is an interesting written song, ( Ready or not ) is about having a baby…I could go on and on as you can tell by my Short Story📕😂! You can’t go wrong! ✌🏻☀️

Surprised you didn't have a bit more to say about the lyrics here. This was a very political song - "No jobs to be found in this country" "people getting angry". This was a comment on the impact of Thatcher's reforms in the early 80s and a time of very high unemployment - especially youth unemployment - and there were riots in several cities. The town (the video seems to be mostly London, but they were from Coventry) was "coming like a ghost town" because shops were shut, young people had nothing to do and nowhere to go and no jobs, and there was fighting and violence, etc. "Do you remember the good old days before the ghost town?"

But yeah such an important movement that as others have said, mixed Caribbean influence with British Post-punk, and then even thrash and hardcore bands here in the United States were adopting that style a lot of the time. Always so fun to dance to that's for sure.

The whole Two-Tone "second wave ska" scene was great, but they were all Prince Buster cover bands. "Too Hot" and "Gangsters" by The Specials, "Wine and Grind" by The English Beat, "One Step Beyond" and "Madness" by Madness were all Prince Buster covers.

In the same way that The Rolling Stones started out as being more-or-less a Chuck Berry cover band and around half of the first Led Zeppelin album was written by Willie Dixon.

In 1981 there was a quite severe depression/recession. The Government was getting rid of old, tired industry because Britain had fallen behind for years. Mrs Thatcher did drag us out of it, but it was painful for many poor people.

the band are from a city called Coventry. this song was written about how the violence in pubs and nightclubs resulted in bands refusing to play there hence Coventry becoming a ghost town. That was in the early 80's but just 2 years ago Coventry was statistically the most violent city in England...Some things never change.

Hah, this is hilarious. Just got back from meeting some friends in Warwick and who was in the pub where we had lunch today? Terry bloody Hall! Actually, I'm on a bit of a role now because I saw Glenn Tilbrook a couple of weeks ago at St James Park (the best one) watching us beat Fleetwood Town. What's next, Ray Davies at a Christmas market?!

Hi Brad and Lex. I'm so glad you've come across The Specials and I hope you check out their other songs too. I think you would like 'Rat Race', 'A Message To You Rudi' and 'Do Nothing' amongst others, but my all-time favourite of theirs is there first single and also the very first single I ever bought at the age of 11 in 1968. It's the absolutely brilliant 'Gangsters' and I would love to hear and see what you think of that masterpiece, when they went by the name 'The Special AKA'. Æx 🙏

Hi from the UK. This song was/will be/is a historian's dream. This song was number1 in the UK charts at the time of the royal wedding between the present King Charles and the Lady Diana. This period in time offers a stark contrast of life in the UK. The pomp and pageantry of the Royal wedding. Compared to the despair of the lyrics of "Ghost Town". Personally, I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. But that all depends on your personnel situation.

The lady totally 'got it': This was a song decrying urban decay in the UK in the late 1970's and early 1980's. It still holds true today, if not even more so (Can we say 'Grenfell'?). Punk expression opened the door for expression through what was then the more exotic sounds of Caribbean origin ...and the country (UK) was all the better for it. Thanks for enjoying this top tune!

I can see the pleasure in Lex’s face and the concentration in Brad’s face is funny. This was the first single I ever bought! I was 8! I used to play it on a wonky record player, the tune would undulate and it was difficult to tell if it was my wonky player or the song. But I used to, and still do love this song. It set the tone for my musical taste I think although with Ghost Town being so unique you could end up musically anywhere 😂

The cover of Monkey Man would be a great one to do by The Specials and of course Nite Klub. Also while you're in the two tone zone, Madness 'Night Boat to Cairo', The Beat 'Ranking Full Stop', The Bodysnatchers 'Easy Life', Bad Manners 'Inner London Violence'

I got into second generation Ska from The Face magazine and KROQ. The guys singing in the front seat would become Fun Boy Three whose "Waiting" album ("Farm Yard Connection", "The More That I See", "We're Having All the Fun", even the Gershwin tune "Summertime".) is also worth a listen. If you go back to songs by The Beat try "Twist and Crawl" or "Too Nice to Talk To" before going onto their "I Confess" and later 'General Public' songs. Bad Manners' "Romeo, Juliet, Sampson and Delilah" is another good listen. Heck,... The whole "Dance Craze" album is a good starting point.
