Great video, You mention using phosphate Pads, BCB Baskets, Plenums, dont over feed fishes, water changes. Even purchasing phosphate free fish flakes etc. But why havent you mentioned trying either Distilled Water with Tap Water 50/50. Or a trusted RODI system to at least have a "Clean Slate" of perfect water during water changes & even Top Offs after some water evaporates etc. Yes at first the RODI system might be pricey but if ine is buying Hanna phosphate kits or even Seachem kits then its evens out. Using RODI water 💦 might save you money when you buy that pricey Import phosphate free fish flakes. Just a wondering, & no, your Discus Tank isnt overstocked, I would add a few more they are cichlids.

Very interesting video! I was so close to buying a poly filter. I will certainly try the phophate remover pad. Thank you for your thourough experiment!!!

Kevin, is it a good idea to use phosphate reducing pads during the first week of the nitrogen cycle? Phosphates are required for bacteria to grow, but my impression is that there will always be trace phosphates no matter how hard we try to reduce them.
@anoxicfiltrationplenums11 ай бұрын
I don't use the pads until at least 2 to 3 months after the tank break in.

That's y you get 2 tube so you don't have to rush fill them both with tank water and cut the sachets on the sizzer cut lines

Hi Dr Novak , I have just received my phosphate reducer pad . I also have a carbon pad. I watched one of your videos when you showed us how you fill up your canister filter then you did another vid where you did not use the carbon pad. Please may I enquire which method you prefer? Use both pads or just the phosphate pad. Thanks for another informative review.
@anoxicfiltrationplenums2 жыл бұрын
I've done it both ways only because some people use carbon and some people do not use carbon. Therefore, I have done it both ways to show that you have an options and those options are up to you whether or not you want to execute them.

Hello Dr Novak. Yesterday I did a water change as my nitrates are still running high. I thought I would check the Eheim 2215. It has been running the BCB for a bit over two weeks. I had it off doing the water change and turned all four valves off so It would not leak much, but I could not get it to open. Yes I had the 5 clips/clamps that hold it shut undone. It was like trying to open a vacuum, so I gave up. Any advise would be greatly appreciated, please?
@anoxicfiltrationplenums3 жыл бұрын
The BCB is in it own basket right? So water can circulate around it, right?
@MichaelsHomeCooking3 жыл бұрын
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums My BCB basket is in my Eheim 2215. I have the blue pad on the bottom with the white pad on top. The Phosphate Reducing Pad, I have placed it at the top but under the top white pad that comes with the Eheim. I believe I built the basket with the plastic canvas with the proper specs as in your video of/with your ACA canister filter. The basket does have 3/4 inch around the basket for free flow around the BCB.
@MichaelsHomeCooking3 жыл бұрын
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums Also, what I did NOT do was turn the valves back to the flow position. I realize now that once I get the canister to the sink, that I need to turn the valves on to release the water. I apologize, my fault for not thinking.

Hi, I just got my Hanna checker and it read 0.24 ppm phosphates (8 days after my last water change). I have not put in a polyfilter yet or any other form of phosphate control. All I have is a plenum and bcbs. I have been having trouble with algae (especially after having gone away for a month and a half), but I recently removed some very old filtration sponges which were polluting my system with nitrates and probably phosphates. I'm going to add the Acurel and see if it makes a difference. Thank you for this great review. I wish they had a similar handy-dandy Hanna checker for Nitrates, I hate the colour guides, for me 20ppm looks just like the next three higher values. I need digital, any suggestions? Thank you again.

I think they do have a nitrate checker I can’t remember if it’s for saltwater or freshwater.

Yup search for hanna nitrate checker they have a low range but it's a pain in the but to perform and they have a high range checker as well wich is actually better

Hi , I need advice on helping my frog tanks? I have two African Clawed frogs in separate tanks because I have a froglet and adult frog that have to be separated so right now I have both tanks with Brown Algae or Diatoms in both tanks. I never had this before and I am very confuse about what happen? I been doing weekly water changes, cleaning off the brown algae that is getting worse it keeps reappearing in just a couple of days or so? What am I doing wrong is there a chemical I could use? Do I have high phosphates in my tank? Thank you, Kim
@anoxicfiltrationplenums2 жыл бұрын
Brown algae is usually a sign of a “new tank” with a lot of nutrients. Cut back on your lighting to only 6 to 7 hours a day for one thing.

Apparently millions of people will beg the difference. So that makes you been doing it wrong. Unless you want to prove me wrong through scientific facts I’ll be more than happy to listen to you. How about any research that’s been done at any universities that would be a starter.
