My 1984 C172P was just inspected for this AD at annual and was perfectly fine. It’s got 12,000 flight school hours and the airframe is still rock-solid. I think the real reason is that these 1970s and 80s Cessnas sell for a 5th of the cost of the new Cessnas but rent at flight schools for about the same, so they are cutting in on Cessna profits. Cessna has an financial interest in creating the perception that the older fleet might have problems. Just follow the money.

They also based the inspection on unimproved runway operations for fleet 207s. Not sure such a rigorous AD is warranted for the 100 series aircraft. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the insights on this new AD. Doing the Annual on my R172K (1980) this week. How did the inspection of your Hawk XP in the shop go? Were you able to visually inspect or did you have to use a borescope or other means?

We'll be inspecting that aircraft in February at annual. We'll do a follow up vid on that effort. Thanks!

At 7 min in you miss an important point. .... clarified point states....(i) For airplanes that have accumulated less than 4,000 hours time-in-service (TIS) as of the effective date of this AD: Initially inspect prior to the accumulation of 4,000 hours TIS or within the next 200 hours TIS after the effective date of this AD, WHICHEVER OCCURS LATER.

Any new updates on this? I’ve got a R182 that’ll be coming into the shop for it’s annual in about a month. Still can’t find anything really about this AD other than the AD itself or your short explanation I just watched.

This is weird how the older aircrafts are not affected by this AD. Just checked a fleet that I’m working on and realized 172 models only affected after year of 1980 manufacturing. Looks like they lost some procedures during the manufacturing or swapped to the lower quality sheet metal. Thanks for the video, watching that while doing that to one 182 that is affected.

The older aircraft had the fittings inside the aircraft. I assume.... that Cessna retooled that area to aid in manufacturing to have the strut fittings on the outside of the skins.

How else do these manufacturers make extra money?? They come up with new stuff when cash flow is slow.

Isn't that area included in annual inspection for every Cessna Model with wing struts...?

Should be. However this moves it up to "special emphasis" and forces a mechanic to get out a magnifying glass. Thanks for watching!

Hey Bill, Larry appreciate the report here. I'm a A&P I.A. up in Alaska and I'm trying to hunt down some pics for inspection purposes with this A.D. which of course would make the inspection process one hell of a lot easier. Any leads on that, regards Brian in Alaska

C172 -* 10 rivets, 6 nuts, 12 washers, 6 bolts, two channels of metal = $3,415.00 !!!! add another 3 Large for labor... wow. makes the whole fleet not very inviting

I’ve made those exact sounds looking at numerous engineering callouts on commercial aircraft. They always start with “Remove engine I.A.W. B747 AMM….” Every line mechanics favorite B767 write up “F.O. Reports #2 window squealing.” Every line mechanics favorite sign off “Lubed window.” My latest favorite question by owners of GA aircraft, “When can I get my airplane in for an annual?” Mechanics favorite/best answer…NEVER!

That effectively removes a lot of Cessna planes from the fleet worldwide. Too expensive to fix at $15000 and the parts. Especially in Europe when you must go to EASA certified repair station licenced to do 'major' repairs. They really know how to charge.
@HangaRatz
@HangaRatz 3 жыл бұрын
Possibly. Then again, if the EASA based aircraft become economically unfeasible maybe we can ship them to the US!

I agree.. to long video and comments not to the point... but is a lot to improve .. the crew should review the video and edit it... write a list of points to talk... looks like a very experience mechanic .. but you should only talk about the problem the solution and show some pictures or videos.. we all in aviation know an AD is and how will affect us... we don’t know about the inspection the repair or what is in the kit.... good luck for the next time........ look for someone also to ask questions... not only ask about taking the floor off!!!! Good luck
