Got to tell you man, early in the days when I subbed a few years ago, you and another great dude called Dustin's Fishtanks were the inspiration and reason why started my 30g long planted aquarium. When I was doing the research, your videos and Dustin's truly gave me all of the basic information I needed to finally take that leap of faith to see how it would go with planted tanks, after only knowing how to keep saltwater aquariums. Nice to see something different. Seems all the KZbin aquarium channels always make the same scapes every time. Like the gaps in between plants, gives the tank contrast and not just a big blob of green.

Just run the lights for 5 hours a day with this tank Sean. That amount of nutrients when all those plants grow super super slow. It is going to be an algae farm. Or run it with liquid co2. I am not trying to be an a..hole. Just want this awesome (expensive) small plants to be algae free. Great Video as usual.

I’m going to add pressure co2 in a day or so. The shorter light cycle is a great suggestion though.

I have tried crypt parva carpets so many times and in my opinion. You only have 2 choices. Nr 1. Lights for 5 hours a day and double the amount of recommended liquid co2. (That means 3 months without fish) or option Nr 2. Plant something big that grow ridiculously fast in the corner for the first 3 months. Then when the carpet is settled in. Take it out. And I think you have a plant like that in your fluval edge 12 gallon. That thing will keep BB algae and hair algae away. Just trying to help. You know I love you Sean. But at least in Sweden, Parva and that other Japanese plant is super expensive. 🙂

pecktec Sean.....Zac knows how to grow plants. He advised me on mu substrate and lighting and my plants have grown very well. Just battling algae now but Mike's special mix is sorting that out. Some really good people in this community

Question for you Mr. Pecktec: Which tank would you chose to buy? Fluval Speck 16, or Fluval Flex 15? The Flex appears to be much more easily available, and much cheaper. Not sure why? Application would be for planted freshwater tank, white clouds, rummy nose tetras, and/or cardinal tetras. Thanks, great channel!

I ended up getting small natural (different shades of brown) gravel. The sale clerk in the pet store said it would be okay for the corys. I am also going to add Fluval Stratum...for the plants (will mix with my small gravel so the dominate color will be black). I am going to try and grow a carpet before adding fish. I want to be adventuresome and add many freshwater plants (tall in back, medium in the middle, and carpet mostly in the front. My plan is to add the substrate, seeds for the carpet and add about 2-3" of water and just let that grow and add water after carpet is establish. Leave light on for what...8hrs? What do you think?

I never bothered with the powders and it seems to work great. I normally add a top layer of amazonia sand though. it looks good.

If I remember right, doesn't Aquasoil give off a lot of ammonia for the first few days in a tank? Regardless, I think this 'scape looks great as is. I'd be hesitant to add anything else, except maybe some frogbit.

it gives off a lot of ammonia and dust in the beginning and you'll need to do some water changes every few day for the first couple weeks with it

I got this aquarium and I am now in the process of setting it up. I want to use black sand but not a fine sand where it will settle on everything like dust. I have used gravel before but I have three cory catfish and they like the sand. I will have live plants in the aquarium but I always get easy plants like Java Fern. I am hoping the light that came with the Fluval Spec 16 will be better for growing plants. Do you have suggestions for sand/substrate? Also, are you planning on updating this aquarium? I am curious how your plants and fish did.

Nicely done I am now over filled with fry in my second tank so I have to move all shrimp to a bucket with a filter putting some tiger endlers in there and of course a low tank setup needs java moss also do you think I can put my 6 cherry shrimp and two endler guppies in the bucket it’s pretty big and might put a sponge I used inside a filter and drop in the bucket like a feeding GN block

The bright white light setting and the more purplish bright setting, I can't find any info on what the difference is between the two modes. Love your channel!

Tomorrow will be an update on it and some of the other tanks. I think it’s just a Little bluer I don’t think it really helps the plants. Some fish may look better under it.

BTW, that tank over kill. You have a lot of slow grows. Just keep an eye out for algae bloom and watch out for ammonia burn for the first week but you should be ok with the plants you have.

Is that Vermiculite?..you could get a huge bag of that at Home Depot for $15...mix some potting soil with it..then cover with "Amazon" soils that resembles the stuff used in hydroponics. Fired clay I think.

I like the scape but i just wish he put some sort of stem plant on the back left side on the large piece of the rock. And maybe even some buce on the front side of the rock inside the crevices

I will probably add some other stuff as I go along. I’m over stem plants right now. And in this tank it would mess up the scale of the “tree”. I did go looking for buce but they were out. I’ll circle back around to it eventually.

Hey I doubt you'll reply, but I recently just purchased a Fluval Spec 16 Gallon for $200. My pump has a very annoying humming noise and I'm not sure how to fix it. From what I've read everybody else has silent pumps that make 0 noise. Is there any way to fix this? Also, I'm not sure about you, but when I removed the pump from the tank the rubber suction cups were stuck to the bottom of the glass.

krab420 well they way impellers work sometimes you end up with a bad one and have to swap it out. The sponge inside the filter caused me issues and I removed it. Not sure about the suckers.
