Pernell was a great actor. When he left Bonanza the show instantly went down. The difference was immediately noticed by me at the beginning of each episode. Before he departed the episode would start with the very impressive riding on to the scene with the lead actors. After pernell left the riding on to the scene was much less impressive. And all of the shoes just weren't the same. That was my take on the story.

Great video tribute to The oldest Cartwright brother & the youngest Cartwright brother. It seems like Adam & Joe didn't have as good of a brotherhood relationship as Hoss & Joe did but you can still see the Genuine caring relationship between them for each others safety. I think one of my favorite Adam/Joe themed episodes was ( My Brothers Keeper) where Adam took care of Joe after he was accidentally shot by Adam then also clawed by a wolf that Adam had to kill to save Joe . Great episode if anyone knows any other good Adam /Joe themed episodes please send me a reply because I haven't really seen to many Adam/ Joe themed episodes most of them has been Hoss/ Joe themed.

GGBell Although Hoss was my favorite Cartwright, I enjoyed the chemistry between these two actors. Their off screen relationship was supposedly not the best, but it's interesting that PR's late son was named Jonathan Christopher And ML's Hwy To Heavens characters name was Jonathan. ML also named one of his sons Christopher??

Pernell got along with the cast really well-he clashed with the production team because of the writing and the way television was being run: 6-8 months of your life grinding out as many episodes as possible(in this case 37 per season) and he left because he got tired of fighting a losing battle with the writers, directors and producers. He thought the writing was bad(and sometimes it was) and the character development was awful(which is true-I still love the show but it irritated me that all of them behaved the same way in season 14 as they did in season 1) and it wasn’t going to change so he left-and the show went downhill after he did. He was also an introvert which is why he spent a lot of time on his own while on set. Introverts who are also artists can be mistaken for egomaniacs or snobs because they prefer their own company to that of others(I know because I am one-an introvert artist) which is where the tales of Pernell’s standoff ish behavior on the Bonanza set came from. He loved the original idea for the story and the actors he worked with, just not the people he worked for(which makes perfect sense, since Lucille Ball and Dezi Arnaz had do deal with these same people both while trying to get “I love Lucy” and “Star Trek” to go on the air

Yes Michael went to see Michael one time with a surprise visit. Pernell was really glad to see him and they both had a real nice visit together. Afterwards Pernell told someone that it was really good to see the kid again. And I read that when Michael had passed away that Pernell was devastated. Besides the fact that he was the lone survivor of the four of them.

In the very first episode Adam has big brother concern for Joe when they learn he was probably lured into town by Miss Crabtree. At that time they viewed Virginia City as a hostile town. So Adam sets out to find Joe before Ben even sends anyone. In Honor of Cochise, Joe risks all to run in and save Adam who has been shot by revenging Indians. In The Crucible, Adam and Joe have some good humored moments before splitting up for a few days. But when Joe learns that Adam is in trouble he is instantly concerned. When the family finally finds Adam after searching for two weeks; Joe is there for his very distraught brother as much as the others. One final example is when Adam accidentally shoots Joe. The whole episode is troubling to watch as Adam goes through guilt, fear, worry, and despair over the probability of his little brother dying with no doctor or medicine. And having to take out the bullet himself causing Joe a lot of pain that Adam himself caused. He was there for his feverish and delirious brother through the night. And when Joe came to the next morning; all he had for Adam was praise for killing the wolf. He didn’t blame Adam and knew the fear and guilt he must have been going through. And he remembered it was Adam who removed the bullet with what he was going through. You could see the love on his face for Adam. Something else came to mind in one or two later episodes long after Adam had left. I don’t remember the episodes but there was speculation that Joe had called out for Adam during a couple hard times he was going through.. I’m pretty certain I did hear him call out for him at least one of those times.
