Richard Herring

5 жыл бұрын

Pennsylvania Polka
It’s episode 200 of the podcast and the end of series 14, two insane milestones for this ramshackle lump of podcast. And to celebrate this occasion there’s a record breaking fourth appearance from the grandson of a Batman, Adam Buxton.
Adam sets the agenda from the start, bearing gifts, mocking stone-clearing like a philistine, revealing what 1995 Richard Herring had somehow discovered annoyed Stewart Lee and attempting a slightly underwhelming tribute to Groundhog Day.
Plus find out how Nile Rodgers responded to jokes by kids, why a head in a jar has to bring its own cloth, whether it’s possible to have a film set at Stonehenge without the stones being knocked over at some point and whether child-men in their fifties have to finally grow up. Plus some extraordinary epistles from World War One and how fields with barbed wire can still cause injury even today.
Thanks to everyone who has supported this endeavour over the last 200 episodes and six years. Hopefully we can continue to move onwards and upwards.
We will be touring the podcast in 2019 (as well as another run at the Leicester Square Theatre on Mondays from 4th February to 1st April. Tickets here leicestersquaretheatre.ticket...

I’ve always felt that they have great chemistry together too. They should do a podcast together in which they just chat to each other. They both have similar career backgrounds in that they both belonged to comedy double acts in the ‘90s with someone who went on to a lot more fame. Herring tends to play up the bitterness a bit more and Buxton’s persona is more chill and content with his hand. It would work!

A lot of the WW1 film footage was actually re-enacted, still shot during the war (mostly) and often with the same people involved rather than actors, but yeah a lot of it wasn't actually filmed by wartime correspondents. It wasn't so easy to film during conflicts back then, not that it's easy now (it really isn't, and plenty of war correspondents have lost their lives, but hey, it's trendy to hate journalists and news reporters these days so I guess people couldn't care less if they got killed doing their jobs) but given the circumstances you were highly likely to get killed by accident if you started filming on the battlefield, let alone deliberately.

I can't find the interview Mark and Peter had at the BFI but I saw the film on Armistice Day. After the screening they played a recording from the premiere at the BFI. This tweet from Mark is one of the only mentions I can find that this interview took place: "A privilege to do the onstage interview with Peter Jackson at @BFI Southbank following the premiere of his astonishing film THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD. Thanks to all who came, and all who watched via satellite around the UK." It's in this interview that Peter talks about using footage of training exercises in place of battles, probably due to the bulk or immobility of the cameras, not to mention the incredible risk factor of filming real conflict for propaganda purposes. I've spent days (not literally) scouring the internet trying to find support for this but have come up empty handed. I'd welcome anyone else's input
