One of my all-time favorite films... Brilliant concept. Always reminds me of my Aunt Mamie that lived in a suburb and use to take the train into Manhattan to go shopping. Once she went into a phone booth to phone her husband George that she would be late coming home as she missed her train. When she got home she realized that her wedding ring was missing. She remembered taking off her glove to get the change and dial the phone. Her husband arrived a bit later. She was crying when she told him the story. He reached out for her left hand and took a gold wedding band out of his suit jacket pocket and placed it on her finger. He had missed his train and went into a phone booth to call her. It was lying on the shelf. When he read the inscription he realized it was hers.

Nice twist towards the end. Very impressed! It's an inspiration to all film students. A lot was communicated without having to use words.

I was honestly expecting that man to get an apology or something. She was rude to him, ate his food and left without even a goodbye or a "Thank you for the coffee"

Adam Davidson, in his 1990 Academy Award acceptance speech for Best short feature film, revealed he made this film for a class while a film student. I'm wondering if he got an "A" in the class.

Everyone seems really impressed with the film...while it is an interesting concept, that woman really makes me angry. There is so much going on here that's just wrong. The level of obliviousness and blind self-righteousness/assuredness is sooo annoying. The first guy was just trying to help, then she thinks that some guy is really eating her food when her bags arent there, then(on a more personal note) she just leaves a completely untouched dish of food on the table to be wasted, she purposefully ignores someone in the same situation as the guy who she basically stole a meal from...She has no sense of guilt or 'putting it forward' attitude. Maybe its because I'm not a film critic or some such similar thing, but this short really made me angry, and it lowkey annoys me that no one seems to care. But then, maybe I'm the one whos caring too much. Im still annoyed tho

i think you’re right and i think that many of us who are impressed with this short film feel similarly! it is an impressive work BECAUSE it conjures these thoughts and emotions

I completely agree. If the purpose of the film was to make us notice those things and be upset about them without even needing much dialogue, then that's good filmmaking. What confuses me are the people saying the film warmed their hearts or filled them with joy...they're definitely missing the point.

She was a karen before karens were a thing. Imagine being so entitled and shameless that a normally embarrassing mistake is amusing. That wasn't even sheepish, self-conscious laughter-she was laughing loudly and gleefully.

Perhaps it wasn't obvious; but the first guy picked her bag, and left her without money. Watch it again

Wow I just saw this and got the same impression, she came off racist too in the beginning with that black man trying to help her. Good observation.
