When he was 19, he tried the whole move to Hollywood penniless to try and make it as an actor. After failing miserably with that, and having to move back home (embarrassed from his failure, and with no direction or plans for his life) he decided to join the Marines along with many of his high school buddies. He fell in love with it, and made many friends due to the camaraderie. But before he was to be shipped off to Afghanistan, he suffered injuries which not only kept him from going, but was also discharged from the Marines entirely. Feeling guilty being left behind while his friends went to risk their lives, he returned home. It was then that he decided to try acting again, and this time he got into Julliard. I highly recommend watching his Ted talk about how being a Marine helped him become a better actor. It's not too long, and he's a great storyteller. If you enjoy Adam Driver, you'll enjoy this too!

Especially when he sits or re-enters screen after interaction with the fan. His subtleties make him stand apart.
