Before he fought in the galactic battles of Star Wars, Adam Driver was a United States Marine with 1/1 Weapons Company. He tells the story of how and why he became a Marine, the complex transition from soldier to civilian - and Arts in the Armed Forces, his nonprofit that brings theater to the military. Because, as he says: "Self-expression is just as valuable a tool as a rifle on your shoulder." Followed by a spirited performance of Marco Ramirez's "I am not Batman" by Jesse J. Perez and Matt Johnson. (Adult language)
The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Same. I joined at 17 and spent the first six years of my adult life in the military and when I got out due to a back injury I felt like I lost my purpose. The hardest part of serving, and specifically deploying, is coming home and adjusting to normalcy again. It’s a whole different world and it’s hard to explain to people who were never in it

PrimeXero Ehhh I’d say Kylo is pretty damn badass. For one he stopped a blaster bolt in mid air then proceeded to interrogate Poe at the same time, he didn’t slow it, or deflect it. He froze it there. For two he kills his own father face to face like he was nothing to him, breaks Poe mentally and gains information from him through torture, takes a direct impact from Chewie’s bow caster to his abdomen which is a weapon shown to obliterate other individuals and walks it off like it was nothing to then have two lightsaber battles in the freezing cold while bleeding. Not only that but he’s not scared to show his face and look at you eye to eye, he happily takes off his mask in his first ever debut in film and doesn’t care about his appearance. Then in TLJ he kills Snoke by manipulating him into a false sense of security and authority, and then fights off 3+ Praetorian guards by himself, decapitates one in a 1v3 fight, throws another in a fan where’s he’s torn to shreds. Plus his broken nature and his temper make him unpredictable. On one side he could not care and spare your life, on the other he might go into a fit of rage and slaughter anyone nearby he deems dismissible. Remember that scary and badass are two separate things.

He was trained as a Marine, they're disciplined to speak with purpose, ignoring anything insignificant, to just get the details and information across in the most effective, efficient manor. Because anything in addition is useless. He's also an actor, trained to say what he's supposed to without hesitating or using the wrong emotions/dwelling on the insignificant details.

@@isaacj2410 Its about the struggle of powerlessness children feel. When people find themselves in a situation that leaves them powerless they often turn to escapism and imagine what it would be like to be as powerful as you want. For a lot of children, this materializes in comic book characters such as batman.

I love this so much. I could hear him talk about his life forever. He’s so articulate. One thing a lot of people forget about Adam Driver is how funny he is. @@thememe-inator532 Not really. I don't think any military members are inherently bad people, I think for whatever reason you do the job it requires bravery to do. But to say they defend our country is just false. In rare cases they probably perform actions that we don't know about that keep us safe, and the dissuasion they cause just by existing is protecting us. But in practically every case the military is just a tool for the government and corporations to make money. Seriously, look into the reasons behind every war we've been in after WWII. The only people claiming it's "to defend America" are the politicians trying to deceive the population so they support it. What they do once they actually wage war is quite telling.

I admire Adam as a human being so deeply. I don’t know what we did to deserve him in this dark world. He’s bound to be named one of the best actors of this entire generation.

The audience was so poor, like they never reacted to any of his jokes its like he was too smart for them and he was too fast for them.

Jay V It’s a TED audience. Mostly highly educated people that are measured in their responses to make sure they don’t laugh when they shouldn’t, etc. This results in them being off every now and then to play it safe.

Look at him go. He has very well structured his thoughts, seriousness and humor. That energy to keep up his train of thoughts is so amazing. He is a machine gun. 👍❤️

I’ve discovered what makes him seem so much different and better than other actors. He said while comparing military and theater, they both aren’t about themselves, it’s about others and you have a role in that. So many people do acting for fame and attention and he is a selfless actor. I don’t think he even likes that much attention. That must be one of the secrets of being a great actor. Selfless acting.

@@NoneNone-dw1jo I am sorry if I have offended you in any way. I just want to be a drama teacher when I am older and thought maybe this would be a good thing to teach. If I am wrong, I would like to get advice. Let me know if you discovered something new about acting technique. Thx!

From an aspiring Marine officer, I'm proud that I will join the same Corps that Adam Driver was (is) a part of, and get to continue the legacy of countless brave, determined, and faithful Marines that have fought with honor, courage, and commitment since 1775. Semper Fi
