I hate that SO many ‘older’ people I know want to retire and then move to other countries in Europe for a ‘nice time’ because they have raised their kids and made their money… yet they’d complain when a refugee family want to escape a war torn country and risk their lives to have a better life so they can raise their kids somewhere safe and actually make money and live their lives.

I always feel that the kind of people who go on such desperate and dangerous journeys are the kind of people who are prepared to do something about their situation - which is laudable. However, they are probably also the kind of people needed to to improve the situation they're fleeing from. It's a great pity that they feel that any attempt to do so would risk the lives of their families. I agree with Josh. Those of us who were fortunate enough to be born in a relatively safe and stable country should be grateful and not whinge over trivial matters.

My family escaped Vietnam in the 70s to Australia, because the only other option was actual death. My aunt almost died just getting onto the boat with the rest of the family. To even suggest that refugees are trying to take advantage of anything is insulting at best, and deadly at worst.

I know this is old, but for those questioning why the people were trying to leave France for the UK: 1) many had a relative or friend in the UK- if you were forced from your home, I'd imagine you'd prefer to resettle with some kind of support network, and 2) many of them spoke some English, and saw themselves as having more links with the UK than France. Also, because of Brexit, there were (and are) far more opportunities for a better life in the UK compared to the already migrant flooded countries on the mainland. They also often had little knowledge of the various laws regarding each country, whereas Britain/UK is more visible or familiar on the world stage, and as Adam pointed out in the clip, they couldn't be deported as easily from the UK

I wish I could upvote every single comment made on this video a thousand times. I've been saying for years that this country, both politicians & some of the public are turning more hateful, xenophobic & inhumane. We're happy to start wars in these countries or to fan the flames to make others do so, but completely unwillingly to deal with the tragic consequences. I know we didn't start the war in Aleppo, but you cannot tell me we're innocent in other places, plus the world could have done more to try to change things in Syria. Even those who we are morally obliged to help, such as Afghan translators for our army, have been thrown aside to be hunted down like rats by the Taliban. This current government is the most corrupt & morally bankrupt I have seen in my lifetime. This has to stop. We used to be a country proud of our reputation & integrity, now we're the laughing stock of the world & a byword for corruption & xenophobia. I'm thoroughly disgusted by our government & those who voted for them in the first place & who continue to support them.

Apparently, they know some English, but not other European languages, which makes life easier on them, it is relatively easy to stay in the UK illegally with no nationwide citizen registration and no compulsion to carry ID, so a low risk of being deported if asylum doesn’t work out, and finally with both Brexit and Covid there is a relatively high demand for the kinds of jobs they could fulfill. Or, so I’ve heard.
@lesleyb55913 жыл бұрын
I've heard a few reasons why people head for Britain. 1) it's apparently easier to work illegally here than it is in the rest of Europe so the people smugglers know if they get migrants into Britain then the migrants are more likely to get work and the people smugglers can take a generous cut from their wages. So the people smugglers tell the migrants lies such as everyone who gets to Britain automatically gets asylum but other countries will automatucally send you back. 2) Many migrants are coming from places where there's no welfare state and believe that if they don't find work they won't survive. As English is the foreign language they're most likely to know they think the U.k is the only place they'll be able to get a job. 3) Some of them are so paranoid with fear they believe their home country's government can still get to them in mainland Europe. I heard about an Iranian man who believed if he stayed in France Iranian government agents could cross into Turkey, then cross into Europe via the Bosphorus then travel easily across the EU to get to him. He said ideally he would prefer to go to Canada or the U.S.A but if that wasn't possible the U.K would be OK.
